Mostly Underwhelmed at Billy's

Finally got there a while ago, and was also "underwhelmed"... it was all, kind of sad.

Langer's: The Next Step

My mama is an east-coast- jewish-deli-tongue sandwich fanatic, and she enjoyed the one she had at Langer's, a while ago. I love the chopped liver, as well.

Pizzeria Mozza - your thoughts

I've been eating @ Pizzeria Mozza since they opened. Last night was the first time I'd been there in about 6 months.... and I have to tell you; something happened. What was once a warm, vibrant, welcoming space, now feels cold, corporate, and flat. The food was fine; but lacked the gusto it once had (my party had multiple dishes we'd done in the past; all missed the mark this time). What's the deal? It's too bad, really.

Broguiere's egg nog: Gelsons v Henry's Farm Markets

you can actually save a great deal of money by taking a little time, driving to the dairy in Montebello, and buying directly from them.

Palate - Food & Wine (a review)

Horrible Experience as well, w/mediocre food... BIG Dissapointment. I was so upset, I wrote an email to them... and they didn't bother to repond... That kind of arrogence say's it all. Here's what I wrote: "Good Morning,
First off, I should tell you that I love food, and regularly dine out. I’m an avid reader of all the local food columns, Chowhound, and other food blogs. I’m an avid listener to KCRW’s Good Food radio show. I will drive for several hours just for an ingredient or a meal. It’s a real passion of mine
I’m writing to you to let you know about my dinner last night, in hopes that nobody has to go through the same experience that I did.
I chose Palate based on a great review in Los Angeles Magazine, and was looking forward to my meal.
As I’m sure you know, regardless of how good the food is, if the service is bad; it ruins it all. Well, to say my service was bad was an understatement.
1. Our server tried to bully us into ordering food we weren’t interested in; even before we actually got to look at the menu. Did he really think we couldn’t understand how it was laid out?
2. Our server gave us all of about 1minute before he came back to take our order, when we asked him for some more time, he didn’t come back for almost 20minutes… we actually considered asking for a new server… wish we had.
3. Our server didn’t know the menu. There were several different items I had questions on: Q: What is forbidden rice? A: Black rice. Q: Ok, well, is it short grain, long grain, wild? A: not “mushy”… Q: What is this veggie (sorry I don’t remember it’s name – Italian), A: hmmm um, ah, um, cabbage? Sivvy? Q: do you mean Savoy Cabbage? A: yeah that’s it…. Classic.
4. After ordering a specific bottle of wine, using the menu number to make it easier for him, he came back to the table and asked us if we wanted just a glass… then came back a second time, and showed us a different wine for over $200, and said ‘this is the one you want, right? I’m laughing while writing this… it’s so ridiculous….
5. I have a severe seafood allergy. When I made my reservation, I told your team about it. I always double check with my server to make sure they’re aware. When I told our server last night. He literally grunted at me, ‘yeah, I already know’.
6. Our ‘porkfolio’ arrived, and we had to wing it to figure out what was what. He didn’t come over to explain until after we’d already eaten quite a bit of it. When I asked about the mustards, first he said, ‘they’re mustard’… then when I asked for more details, what kind, what’s in them, where are they from, what do they go with… all I got was ‘dijon, and seed’…. Nice.
By the time we finished our meal, the last thing we wanted to do was stick around and go through same nonsense over cheese and dessert….
Why would I ever return? Why would I ever recommend Palate to anyone?"

Anyone tried Andiamo in Silver Lake?

just ordered a pizza and panini from them last night to give it a shot.... I totally agree w/above review. Bland. Cardboard, flavorless crust; just like the frozen pizzas from 20 years ago, sausage that tasted like nothing (which I didn't know was possible).. The panini was overbearing w/too many sun-dried tomato's, that drowned out all other flavors. They make a big deal out of delivering on Vespa's, but my food showed up in a passat wagon with a delivery woman w/an apathetic bad attitude. Very dissapointed. I was really hoping for something more.

Paris Baguette on Western Avenue -- a delicious bakery!

I just went there, based on all the raves from this post. Totally dissapointed. The baguette was limp. Doesn't even compare to one's @ Bread Bar.

Have any Chowhound Faves Broken Your Heart

my office orders from Clem regulary, and each time they screw up the order... something is always missing, wrong, or just plain bad. we always reiterate what we want, and they still can't get it right. on top of that, mediocre is a very apt description for the food, but w/the exception of Craft; the only thing in the century city area of that calibre.

BBQ King on Sunset Gone

Wow! It's gone! I drove by the corner of Sunset and Figueroa today, and the BBQ King has been demolished by the evil developers of the Orsini/Medici/Visconiti. Does anybody know if they might have survived and moved to a new location?

Food Poisoning/Allergy Protocol...thoughts?

I had my epipen w/me. Somtimes, reactions are delayed, depending on the situation. In my case I felt myself getting a reaction, I immediately left, chewed on a some benedryl to see if that would do it, by the time I got to the emergency, it was quite clear to my friend that the pills wouldn't cut it, and of course the emergency room staff didn't do anything, so he was forced to give me my shot right there in the emergency room....

Food Poisoning/Allergy Protocol...thoughts?

I have a lethal allergy to sea food. I've had it forever, and either avoid being around it, ordering anything that might have it, or tell the server about it, to relay the chef.
That being said, I realize that I take risks whenever I eat out. Recently, I went to a place where I'd eaten a numbe of times. I told the waiter about my allergy, and didn't think anything more about it. Long story short, wound up in the emergency room with a needle being jabbed in my leg to bring me back from the brink.

So here's my question. Should I have told the restaurant about it? I mean, I did take the risk by eating there (vietnamese place and super yummy).... I'm not about to sue them, I don't want to make anyone feel bad...

Thoughts?

HELP! Craving REAL hot chocolate (thick) and CHURROS!

There is a Churro Truck that parks on the corner of Echo Park Blvd just south of Sunset every evening. Their churros are AMAZING. They make them there, and they're light, fluffy, and not at all greasy. Plus, they're incredibly cheap!!! You get a bag of 6 or 8 for $2. I don't know if they have chocolate, but i wouldn't be suprised, since they sell all kinds of botanicas.

butcher in the valley

If you're interested in a great Swiss/German butcher, go to Continental Meat & Sausage Co. on San Fernando in Glendale.... It's great. Cash/Check only.

15 Restaurant in Echo Park

Ugh. Having read previous posts and reviews warning of spotty service/food, I thought I'd give it a shot anyway, seeing as there are few decent local restaurants in echo park. We got there @ around 7:30 on Sat. eve. and there were only a handfull of diners. After being told to sit where we wanted, we waited and waited and waited to place our order. When the server came, he didn't take our orders, but told us of the specials... the fish of the day were 'scallops'... that's all he said; no desrciption on preperation... just the one word. After waiting even longer, we were finally able to order, and then continued to wait for our appetizers; which were ok. Our main courses came out too soon, and my Kobe Burger that I ordered medium-rare was not only practically raw, but refrigerator cold as well.... I sent it back. I was offered no apologies. I was offered no replacement. I got back the same piece of meat, which I only ate a few bites of; that bad. Now, we all know a good server can make up for a shakey kitchen, and vice verse.... but in this case, our server was apathetic. The best way to describe the food was mediocre. Sorry I went and wasted my money.
