Sushi lunch in Irvine
Can you help me find a good sushi lunch near Shady Canyone Golf Club in Irvine? I did a little board research, but can only find Wasa, 10 miles away. Anything tasty and somewhat closer? I need it to be open for lunch on a Wednesday.
Best bites of 2011
I just moved here in September, but I wanted to participate. Here’s my list:
Pork bahn mi from Saigon Sandwich
Pork bone ramen at Kirimachi
Brussel sprouts at Barbacco
Spicy scallop roll at Okoze
Duck confit basteeya at Aziza
Lamb shank at Kokkari
Tahitian vanilla ice cream at Humphrey Slocumbe
Pork belly bun at Chairman Bao
Sisig taco with egg at Senor Sisig
Special roasted turkey sandwich at Fredy’s Deli
Food Social event
Has anyone gone to this before?
http://www.food-social.org/
I can't tell if this is more of a food thing or a young people drinking thing. I want it to be like an indoor Off the Grid.
What's the word on Kirimachi Ramen on Broadway?
We went tonight since we live in North Beach. Even my non foodie husband loved it! We tried one of each kind, we liked the pork bone broth MUCH better than the Sapporo Miso broth. Don't get me wrong, the latter was also good, but not as rich. And the meat in the ramen just melted in your mouth. I'm already craving another bowl.
Restaurant.com's 80% off sale - where and what to eat?
Bumping this, would love to get some current input on good restaurants on restaurant.com. Most of the threads are fairly outdated.
Chinatown food crawl
Dinner, maybe around 7:30 or 8:00 start time, and probably only 4 of us.
Mission District Food Crawl
Sorry, forgot to report back. This was an amazing night, I'd do it again. Unfortunately, the group was too full for La Santaneca though. I won't bring lightweight next time! :)
Chinatown food crawl
Hi all! After you led me on an incredible food crawl around Misison District, I was hoping for a similar plan for Chinatown. I've read through several Chinatown threads, but I can't find anything that would make a good dinner food crawl schedule. Help please? My only requirements are that I prefer places with seating that are all walkable once you get to Chinatown. And yes, all fantastic Chinese food. (Although I already know you're going to tell me the best Chinese isn't in Chinatown, so just the best you can find there.)
Feel free to give me other food crawl ideas. I love doing them, any neighborhood is fine with me as long as it's in the city. Thanks!
Okoze
Hi fellow 'hounders! I searched the board, but didn't find anything written up about Okoze, a small neighborhood sushi bar in Russian Hill on Union and Hyde. My husband and I tried it out last night. I'm terrible at food writeups, but I just wanted to post and say we were plesantly surprised. Jam packed at 7:00 on a Thursday night, but our service was still very attentive. I ordered the Omakase sushi dinner: 12 pieces of nigiri, a small roll, 2 pieces of ebi tempura, and miso soup, all for $40.
The miso was actually very rich. I'm not sure if it's authentic or not, but it's the first miso soup that actually tasted like anything to me. The nigiri was 11 pieces of fish (didn't ask what was what) and 1 scallop. The scallop was to die for and the majority of the fish was very fresh. Some of the pieces had what I call "toppings" on them, chopped scallion, a little ponzu, etc but only a few. My husband and I will definitely come back.
Mission District Food Crawl
Thanks for all the great responses! I think my plan is to do Farolito, La Taqueria, La Santaneca, Mission Pies, and Humphrey Slocumbe. We will definitely be going at peak hours (7:00-ish on a Saturday night) so I'll probably shoot myself in the foot on wait times, but whatever. Just to confirm, are all of these places open in the 7-10pm range on a Saturday night?

Mission District Food Crawl
This is fantastic! We'd be going for dinner....and we definitely don't mind 9,000 calories. :)
Mission District Food Crawl
HI all! Looking for a specific itinerary for a "show off the Mission District to guests" food crawl. Things I would like it to include:
1. At least 1 mission style burrito stop
2. At least 1 dessert stop
3. In areas that wouldn't scare a guest, i.e. bums are fine but guy shooting up on the street isn't
4. Restaurants don't need reservations, we can walk in whatever time without more than a 20
minute wait and get great food
5. Restaurants have somewhere to sit and eat food, so we don't have to stand and eat all night
Go!
Dessert for a BBQ
Hi all! We've volunteered to bring the dessert for a BBQ and we don't cook. There will be 4 adults and 2 children under the age of 5. I don't mind getting 2 separate desserts, one for the kids and one for the adults. We live in North Beach, but the BBQ is in Marin. Anything on the way that's outstanding?
Healthy, walkable North Beach?
Correct, those were some places nearby I thought might be healthy.
Healthy, walkable North Beach?
Great idea on the chicken! I'll check that place out.
Healthy, walkable North Beach?
Sorry, I should have been clearer, Healthy is what your doctor and personal trainer would tell you to eat: lean meats, fresh vegetables, whole grain carbohydrates like brown rice, couscous, quinoa, and other high protein foods like lean dairy and beans. You know, boring stuff!
What I don't want is high fat cheeses or cuts of meat, anything fried, a ton of white flour, heavy sauces, or anything super oily. That's for the weekend!
Healthy, walkable North Beach?
I know, this just caused the majority of you to laugh. But we just moved to the neighborhood (right off Washington Square on Filbert) and I try to eat healthy during the week so I can really splurge on the weekend. We also like to be able to walk somewhere during the week since I work in Silicon Valley and get home late from work. I've done my research, and here are the walkable restaurants I've found.
Mario's Bohemian Cigar Store
Maykadeh Persian Cuisine
Estia Restaurant
And that's it. Sad, huh? By the way, I equate healthy as NOT Italian, but feel free to prove me wrong. We're also very active mid 30's couple, so we don't mind walking some hills if it brings us somewhere good. Anything else I'm missing? Help!

Destination Dining
My husband and I just moved to San Francisco and are already in love with our foodie city. We're getting plenty of ideas from the board on local restaurants. Can you help us with destination dining? Where are the great places to go within an hour or two of the city? Amazing drives and restaurant views are a plus. Thanks!
Moving to FiDi
Thanks for all these replies, this is great! Another question, are all these places open at night or just during the day? Also, are they open on weekends? I'll actually be working in Silicon Valley, probably won't make it home until after 8:00 most weekday nights. Sorry, should have pointed that out sooner!
Moving to FiDi
Hi all! We’re finally moving to San Francisco at the end of the month. Right now we’re in temporary corporate housing on Battery and Washington in the Financial District. We need help finding places to eat the few months we’re staying here. We have a few non-food requirements. We'll have a car, but we’re not interested in fighting for parking, so only places near a parking ramp or with a lot. We’ll also walk and take public transportation, as long as we don’t have to walk through an unsafe neighborhood. Last but not least, no long waits. (OMG, we sound like such divas!) I’ve done a ton of board research, but I can’t tell what meets our non food requirements.
That being said, here are our favorite foods in no particular order:
• Middle Eastern
• Casual breakfasts (I could eat egg white veggie omelets, granola, and oatmeal all day) - I just saw the latest thread on this, but not a ton of replies yet.
• Vietnamese – I’ve trolled all the Vietnamese threads, but I’m a little worried that they’re in an unsafe part of town. Would you walk to Turtle Tower from FiDi at night?
• Sandwich shops, any kind
• Sushi – really great places or mediocre places with great specials
• Good grocery store deli’s/salad bars/take out areas
• Any places where they serve BOTH healthy dishes (steamed veggies, brown rice, great salads) and bar food (burgers, fries, wings) to satisfy both my husband and I in one place
Thanks in advance for your help!

Our State Fair 2011: it's the Best State Fair in our State!
Visit #1 of 2 at the state fair yesterday afternoon. I had:
Gizmo – Seriously, my favorite thing at the Fair. So delicious!
Ollie’s Crab Fritters – Both my husband and I agreed it’s only good with copious amounts of sauce.
Cinnie Smith’s – We always get the mini’s with ice cream and a side of frosting, because that’s the way we roll.
Ooey Gooey Cookie Dough – I won’t lie, I really really liked this. Much better than deep fried Oreos or candy bars.
Jamaican Jerk Fries – We weren’t that impressed. Kinda just tasted like French fries.
1919 Root Beer – Enough said.
Lingonberry float – A Fair staple for me, good way to end things. I wait until it melted enough to mix it all together, then drink.
Pronto pup – I have to have one “normal” food on the list, right?
Minneapple fried pie- We actually really liked this one too. The cinnamon ice cream made it.
Chicken friend bacon – This was my favorite Fair food last year, and came close to it this year.
Still need to do the Breakfast Lollypop, Fried Pickles, Fried Green Tomatoes, and whatever else I can fit in there.
Vietnamese Restaurant Recommendation
Sorry to dredge up an old thread, but which of these restaurants has the best bun?
What are your favorite restaurants on Eat Street (Nicollet Ave)?
Quangs: I travel domestically frequently and try Vietnamese wherever I go. Nothing compares to Quangs. I'm a spring roll and grilled beef bun girl, with an occaisonal limeade.
Peninsula: This is where we go when we're looking for a little more upscale on Eat Street. Nothing on Eat Street is actually upscale, but comparatively, this seems the nicest.
Evergreen: I don't crave Chinese a lot, but when I do, this is where I go.
For some reason, I don't care for the Jasmine trio or for Pho Tau Bay. PTB is because Quangs is that much better to me.

Any good sushi recommendations in KC area?
I'm in town for business and will be staying downtown. It doesn't seem like any of these recommendations are anywhere near downtown. Anything good in the area? I have a car but would prefer to stay close.
Rachel's is open?

Anyone know anything about this? Embarrassing, I live across the street and had no idea!
Darbar India Grill - Uptown
Has anyone else eaten here? Going to Lagoon Friday for a movie, thought about starting here.
Traditional breakfast
I've read a lot of posts about "fancy" breakfasts, but are there any great traditional breakfast places in Seattle proper? I'm a huge fan of egg white veggie omelets, oatmeal, and yogurt and granola.
Easter Brunch Suggestions?
For an above average (but not outstanding) holiday brunch with a great view, we like to do Windows on 50th. It's on the 50th floor of the IDS building. All windows. The quantity of the food is awe inspiring, the quality is (once again) only above average. All in all though, we always have a good time there and use it for our go to place for holiday meals.
Can anybody confirm rumor- Dayton's son's restaurant?
There is a sign on the building that says Peer House, coming in summer of 2011. I tried googling it, but there's not a formal website yet. Very intrigued by this one.....
