Jackson, MS- Need a country ham!

Hey, Clarkafella! In case you want to get a country ham this year, I spotted some at the Kroger in Brandon this evening. They only had four or five. Sorry, I did not note the brand.

I really wish people would not recommend restaurants where they haven't eaten.

Where did you eat in Tupelo, MS ---- Shockley's Pancake House, Johnny's Drive-In, or Dudie's Diner? Those were about the only places in which to dine in Tupelo 30+ years ago.

Tupelo, MS--Where should we eat?

Crawfish are out of season now. Tupelo is not exactly "cajun country" anyway.

White Cap, Biloxi, MS

Have you heard anything about the food? I use to LOVE the old White Cap and have missed it since that rude Katrina pushed her way into town. I will have to make a special trip down soon to check out the White Cap!!

Southern Cookin'

There is a big difference between cracklins and chitlins. Chitlins are prepared and fried intestines -- not even close to cracklins, pork rinds, or chicharron.

Pigging out in Jackson Mississippi

Sorry, Frank's is long gone.
I'm with Jane Winston --- I like Mayflower better than the Elite.
Primo's on Lakeland is not as good as any of the old Primo's. The breakfast is fair.
I don't care for Two Sister's. The food is just "o.k." and it is overpriced.
Peggy's is not in Jackson.
See my previous post regarding Stamp's (aka Cool Al's) and Peaches. Same goes for Bylly's.
I have never been to Martin's or E & L. I have never heard anything particularly good about either.
I love Crechale's!

Let us know where you end up.

I will have to put that on my "to try" list. The family will be in Tupelo later this month. We will have to check out the place there, too.

Pigging out in Jackson Mississippi

I am having a hard time coming up with a good country breakfast. Primo's on Lakeland is the only thing coming to mind. Can anyone else help?

As far as the catfish goes, Cock-of-the Walk is my favorite. The catfish is thin and crispy. The cole slaw is wonderful, as is the cornbread. You can't beat the sweet tea served in a tin cup. It is so cold and so sweet and so refreshing. Jerry's is good. I haven't been to Bo Don's in years.

Abner's is a regional chain chicken place. Nothing special. Skip it.

Hal & Mal's, the Mayflower, and Keifers are some of my favorite lunch places. I get po-boys and redbeans & rice at H & M's. The plate lunches or the grilled catfish at the Mayflower are my faves. The salads and gyros are my choices at Keifers.

Crechales is an old (circa 1950's) restaurant. It is nothing fancy. But the food is delicious and Bob and company will treat you like family. If you are celebrating a b/d, the staff will fire up the juke box and sing "Happy Birthday" to you. Walker's is another great option. I love the redfish Anna. These are two of my all-time favorites in town!

Stamps is now called Cool Al's (same location, some people -- there was just a little family squabble about the name). The super burger is SUPER, but it is huge!!!!!

I grew up in the country so I cook my own soul food. Therefore, I have never eaten at the Big Apple, Peaches, or Collins. And, I have not been to Pavoni's yet, either.

Happy eating!

Discreet ways to pretend you are "eating" your food?

DH’s grandmother is a very picky eater. In fact, she really only eats what she cooks. The major point of entertainment at family meals is watching grandmother landscape her plate. She will shift some of her veggies to the salad plate and cover them with lettuce and bury bits of meat in the potatoes. She will break open a roll, pull out some of the interior bread, and fill the hole with some other food. She doesn’t realize that we have all caught on to her habits. It is sad, since she is the one missing out on all of the good food.

Downtown Jackson MS without a car

The Mayflower does have catfish --- fried or grilled. The grilled is VERY good. If you are there for lunch on Friday, you might run into my husband and his friend. They go there just about every Friday for lunch. It has been years since I have been to Miller's, so I can't really tell you what it is like now.

Chimneyvile is o.k. It is not as good as some, but not as bad as others. And, I do enjoy H & M's for lunch. They, too, have catfish. The Old Capitol Inn is a B & B that has lunch service with some tasty southern foods. It is close to the capitol.

I wish that you had a car because the Jackson area does have some good places to eat. You'll have to come back again to get a true taste of Mississippi. Let us know what you end up doing.

I agree with pkimble's recs for Mayflower and Hal & Mal's. And, Dennery's is closed. The Elite is o.k. I have not been to Steve's. I think that Chimneyvill is open only for lunch. I am sorry to tell you that there isn't much within walking distance of your hotel. If you do decide to spring for a taxi there are lots of better options.

Edit: I've never really thought of Jackson as a BBQ town. Fried catfish is the specialty of the area.

Liquor Store Rant

Thanks, Bill, for keeping the sterotype of the uneducated, redneck Mississippian alive.

Chowhound Post

Would you cancel if sick?

Agreed. Sinus infrection and "very sick" do not equate, unless the infection is left untreated. I also agree with the "coughing" statement. Besides, a sinus infection is not as easily transmitted as the cold virus.

To the OP -- did the hostess go to the doctor to get this potential sinus infection diagnosis? If so, did she get antibiotics? What about a steroid injection? If she has taken care of the sickness today(Thurs.), she should be up to handling her hostess duties by the weekend.

Mississippi I-55 Eats?

That is a large area to cover (about 350 miles worth). Do you have any specific towns that you are interested in? When you say "near the Interstate" do you mean within 2 blocks or 2 miles? More information, please.

BellSouth Pioneer Cookbooks

Herb, I, too, hope that you are not disappointed. I have a couple of the Alabama books and three of the Mississippi books. There are a lot of replications -- one recipe repeated four or five times with a different name or some minor ingredient change. The books are so large that they will not open flat making it difficult to read the recipes. Maybe you will have better luck than I have had with them

Tupelo, MS--Where should we eat?

I am originally from the Tupelo area and only get back there 3 or 4 times a year. Therefore, I tend to go back to the same old places that I loved when I lived near there. Vanelli's is my favorite -- a mixture of Italian, Greek, and American food. I have not been since Pappa Vanelli died. I don't know if it has changed. Woody's is another good option. Both are on North Gloster.

Sweet Pepper's Deli is a regional chain. They do have some tasty sandwiches. Connie's Fried Chicken, across from the hospital, is in an old fast food restraunt building. It maintains that fast food atmosphere, but the food is wonderful -- crispy fried chicken, biscuits, gravey, etc.

Don't bother with Harvey's or the Rib Cage. I have had multiple bad experiences at both places. I am sorry to say that there are a LOT of chains.

For an adventure, ask for directions to one of the many steak and fish houses out in the country in that area. Great food, wonderful characters, and sometimes beautiful rural scenery.

I am sure there are many great new places, but I like to go back to my old faves for the comfort of home feel.

Good food in Jackson, MS

Lebowski, if you are going to be in Jackson this weekend, I do hope that you have already made arrangements for a place to stay. It seems that most of the hotels in the area are already booked with MS and LA Gulf Coast hurricane evacuees. I imagine most of the restaurants are going to be hopping this weekend with all of the additional people.

There are several threads about Jackson that you can find by searching. Look at the top of the white box and find “South” written in red. Just to the right of that is “Search this board”. Click on that, enter Jackson, MS in the empty box, and hit “Search”. You will get the most recent threads about Jackson.

IMO, Jackson is not much of a bar-b-que town. There are some good, small mom-and-pop’s and gas station bar-b-que places in some of the out lying towns.

Since I don’t know where you are staying, whether you will have a car, what “moderate: means to you, etc., I can’t give you many specifics. I will list some of my Jackson (in town) favorites beginning with the least expensive and increasing in price.
- Cherokee, Rooster’s, Scrooge’s, Broad Street Bakery, Sal & Mookie's, Basil’s of Belhaven, The Mayflower, Crechel’s, Walker’s Drive In, and Char.

Happy dining in Jackson!

What to do about bad hosts?

B & W, I am guessing that the poster that mentioned the rude guest insisting on bringing something to dinner was in referance to a thread from last summer. It was very interesting and stirred up lots of opinions . You need to read it for yourself and the follow up thread.

Guests Sitting at the Hors d'ouevre Table

I agree with you, botlnut55. I do not want a bunch of leftovers in my refrigerator. I do not want to have to hunt people down to return their serving dishes. On those rare occasions when I host a meal in which others contribute a dish, I want them to take their leftovers home with them. It certainly helps me with the clean up.

Biloxi Seafood stand/casual restaurant

Could you be referring to Tug's Wharf? It is on Magnolia Street overlooking part of the back bay area. It is relatively new -- less than a year old. We were down there about a month ago and had lunch at Tug's. My shrimp po-boy was very good.

We had dinner one evening at the 49 Lookout on Highway 49 in Gulfport. As reported in other posts, it is a very casual place. We were with a large party (more than 15) and everyone was pleased.
