HELP! Need an Exclusive, Expensive, Incredible Lunch Place, Midtown West
I have to second The Dining Room at The Modern. I can't think of any argument against it.
Fatty Crab is the worst meal I've ever had in New York
I'm always a little confused when people talk about Momofuku. There IS no restaurant called Momofuku, is there? There's Momofuku Noodle Bar, Momofuku Ssam Bar, Momofuku Ko, and now, Ma Peche. The cost varies pretty widely from restaurant to restaurant.
Are people who say Momofuku generally referring to the original noodle bar?

Levin Bakery Sticky Buns
Well, I CAN report that, when I wanted to serve Levain cookies at my Oscar party a couple of weeks ago, I called the bakery and they put my order together. It was ready for pickup when I stopped in a few hours later. I would imagine, then, that they'd do the same for sticky buns.
I'm from Boston, NY Wife says: "NY Pizza is the best." So where is it?
I grew up in Brooklyn, eating at slice joints. If that's the standard, more or less, Sal and Carmine's is a good choice. They're on the west side of Broadway, around West 102nd Street.
I hear that the Popover now sells kits to make your own popovers at home.
Maialino Restaurant Week Lunch
They were out of the cheesecake late in the day on Tuesday. But the coffee granita was incredible.
My favorite appetizer was the smoked swordfish. I ordered the fried artichokes, which where great, but my friend's swordfish was the more unusual dish.
Am I the only one who thinks Sam Sifton sounds an awful lot like Ruth Reichl? (moved from Manhattan board)
Huh. Are you suggesting that was fired from the Times? Or that Gourmet's closing was done to get rid of her?
where should an uni "virgin" try uni?
Gael Greene recommends the 'uni on hamachi tucked in a pork rind' at the new 5 and Diamond. http://www.insatiable-critic.com/Article.aspx?ID=1342&keyword=5%20&%20Diamond

I need a rotisserie duck
Citerella usually does have rotisserie ducks, and not very expensive either. But I have found them to be not very crispy.
Porchetta anywhere?
I had Locanda Verde's porchetta sandwich for lunch last week. Very delicious, but I wouldn't describe it as "crackling."
Lunch near Penn Station: help, please
Thanks for the help. We ended up at Tir Na Nog, which worked out just fine. Right near Penn Station. And to me it was certainly a step up from Houlihan's. An ersatz Irish pub is certainly an improvement over a chain of ersatz Irish pubs.
I had that traditional Irish dish, blackened salmon and avocado in a whole wheat wrap. Everything we ordered was fresh and well prepared.
So, not the most memorable meal I've ever had, but it was just what we needed.
Thanks, again.
Summer '09 Restaurant Week - plans, reviews
Thank you. This is what happens when you read a post on one day and its replies on another.
Summer '09 Restaurant Week - plans, reviews
I had the calamari and carrot salad starter, which I found to be the outstanding item of the day. Seasoned perfectly. My friends had the summer bean salad and the sugar snap peas, shrimp, and cucumber. All very nice and light and perfect for summer.
Our second courses were summer flounder, sea bass, and braised lamb, all of which we enjoyed.
The best dessert, hands down, was the warm chocolate bread pudding. The others though, were also excellent -- chocolate cherry fudge cake with cherry vanilla ice cream, peach-blueberry streusel tart with toasted almond ice cream, and the cookie plate.
Have a wonderful time. Let us know what you have.

I had lunch yesterday at LV, too. Loved it. We were seated at the front of the restaurants; I was facing out. With all the windows and doors thrown open, and the Hudson River just a block away, breezes blew through the place just lovely. Like sitting outside, without cars.
Of course I love restaurants that offer their regular menu during RW.
I had the crispy artichokes and the porchetta sandwich. Enjoyed both.
Today was Gramercy Tavern. If you don't know, GT, USC, and EMP aren't fully in on RW. You won't find them on the official lists. But GT is doing a $25 menu this week. EMP is doing the week of 7/217. So if you were disappointed to see no DM restaurants on the list, call and check.
Gramercy Tavern was wonderful, as usual, and they gave out $24 gift cards, useable through 9/4.
Lunch near Penn Station: help, please
Thank you both.
I looked at the regular Keen's lunch menu first. When I woke up from my faint, I found the pub menu, which has many fewer $45 items. I'm sure I'd love it but don't know about my cousin.
The kicker is, it seems that there's no Houlihan's any more.
Maybe I can talk her into something in Koreatown.
Lunch near Penn Station: help, please
My cousin is coming in via LIRR to have lunch with me on Monday. She doesn't really want to get on another train or bus so we have to stay near Penn Station.
She suggests Houlihan's. Or another place in the Reese family of family restaurants.
Please help save me from that.
Many thanks.
Jewish Chicharrones
Wow. I can't remember having the opportunity to make the same recommendation twice in such rapid succession. As I posted on the "heaviest food in NY" thread, Sammy's Roumanian.
They serve mashed potatoes to which they add schmaltz and gribenes.
Passover Sweets
You can get Matzel Toff (CARAMEL and chocolate coated matzoh) at Zabar's or Russ & Daughters. Zabar's has a good selection of Shick cakes and cookies.
If your hosts are seriously kosher for passover, nothing from City Bakery or other wonderful bakeries is likely to be acceptable. You'd need something packaged that is marked kosher for passover.
Some people, though, aren't so strict.
Payard used to carry a line of packaged lemon cakes and chocolates that had the imprimature of the chief rabbi of Paris. Sadly, they haven't had them for the past couple of years.
The Heaviest Food in Manhattan
Sammy's Roumanian. Hands down.
Dude, there's chicken fat on every table. In a syrup dispenser.

Any new tea shops worth trying?
Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that. I guess when people who like a restaurant don't support it, it will close.
Their website is still up, though, hence my confusion.
Any new tea shops worth trying?
Have you tried the Harlem Tea Room ( http://www.harlemtearoom.com/ )? I had the best-brewed pot of tea there. Reservations are recommended.
Jazz Lincoln Center pre-show eats?
If the show is in one of JLC's Time-Warner venues, rather than the Lincoln Center campus, you might consider grabbing a bite at Bouchon Bakery or in Whole Foods.
Any Luck with FreshDirect?
It's galling when they are late. And sometimes more than that, if you have to leave at a particular time.
BUT, when they ARE late, be sure to call or email customer service. They will credit the delivery charge back to your account.
