A Little Help with Moishe's Coleslaw (Retail Product) - Please
Cabbage, vinaigrette (water, sugar, vinegar, oil, salt, garlic, herbs, spices), carrots.
And 2 sodium whatchmacallits.
Good luck. I've come close, but I still buy theirs at Costco.
Places that serve UNACCEPTABLE food
I'll third Benedict's and raise you one Monkland Grille pizza. Yuck!
Fish sauce available in Montreal
Pretty much any good sized Asian grocer carries it.
Fish sauce available in Montreal
The "best" fish sauce comes from Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam, and when the wind blows the wrong way, it's the smelliest island in the world. Fish sauce from there is available all over Asia, but I've yet to see it here.
That said, much like maple syrup, many Thai fish sauces are mixes of whatever they can get for a good price.
When I learned to cook in Thailand, my mentor was always faithful to Squid brand, for what it's worth.
Top Quality Japanese/Korean Silken Tofu, Where Art Thou?!?
Did you try the Korean grocery in NDG on Sherbrooke/Beaconsfield?
You might also try asking at Keung Kee in Chinatown. They do a dish called "Japanese tofu with greens" (I think) which sounds benign, but is heaven on a plate, and they use the creamiest tofu ever.
Any suggestions for the West Island?
Do you mean the one in the food court?
Odd place, that. At first glance it's just a regular mall resto, doling out the sweet and sour pork and chicken fried rice, but below the surface, the cook really knows his stuff.
I used to work around the corner, and we'd go there every Friday. A Chinese colleague introduced me to the "hidden" Chinese menu, and I learned to call ahead of time for their amazing signature soup.
But the real surprise is something listed on their main menu as Beef with Rice Stick Noodles, which is in fact, as far as I know, Montreal's only real version of char kway teow, and is sensational. Also much too big for one mortal human to eat.
Leonidas chocolates at Costco!!!!!!!!!
Bought a bunch at Bridge the other day. They still had tons. Boy are they good!
seaweed
The Koren and Japanese grocery on Sherbrooke at Beaconsfield in NDG has a dizzying assortment of seaweeds.
Alpenhaus restaurant
Nope to Chalet Lucerne and Hunter's Horn. GAAAAAA!!!!! It's driving me nuts, because i went there a few times. I can see the exterior. Lots of wood, 3-4 steps down below street level to the front door.
Unfortunately, it's not mentioned in my priceless 1967 "A Taste of Montreal", but that book is a great read anyway if you like strolling down memory lane.
Alpenhaus restaurant
Slightly OT, but not really.
I'm having a senior moment that's been lasting for a while.
What was the name of the Swiss resto on Ste. Catherine, a few steps down, North side, maybe kitty-corner from the Alpenhaus? Was it called the Happy Wanderer maybe?
fish & chips?
I agree. Horrible. When the pulled the battered fish out of the freezer, it was all downhill from there.
Octopus main course
Chez Doval. Out of this world. Main course. Perfectly grilled.
I'm so hungry now.
Monkland Village
Seriously.
Fay Wong was always my favourite "joke" restaurant. I ordered from them years ago, and it was the most bland, uninspired, tasteless Chinadian food I'd ever eaten. Horrible. Never ordered again.
A couple of months ago I walked past it - it's 3 minutes from my house - and saw some Chinese people eating inside. I actually stopped to look at the menu in the window, rather than just laughing at the fake Myron Gallaway review they pasted up, and realized the menu in the window was very different from my old takeout menu. How many take-out joints have a whole "Bean Curd" section?
Upon close examination, I realize they have a huge variety, and and many very non-take-out dishes. Well, as it turns out, if you ask the owner for the "real thing", you'll get it. And it's actually pretty good. In fact, it's become the go-to place.
Even things marked as hot are about as spicy as milk, and he explained to me that the local clientèle aren't exactly spice-meisters. Think Agora crowd.
But if you explain what you want and how you want it, they are surprisingly versatile. Last time I was in there, a Chinese couple was devouring a whole duck that looked incredible.
Where can I find asian "Sambal Belacan"?
It's a bit out of your way, but Marche Hawaii in V. St. Laurent has a pretty good, and ever expanding Indonesian section. They have a lot of products I just can't find elsewhere.
Poutine near NDG?
I dare say, Sousmarins George, down the hill from NDG on St. Jacques in Ville St. Pierre, makes a pretty mean poutine.
*Anti-Foodie thread warning* For COSTCO shoppers....
Costco really isn't your best best for a lot of things. Whenever stuff is in shipping crate quantities, it might seem like a good deal, but Costco's food prices are pretty high on most items.
Reggiano and Padano are good deals there, as are the lactase pills to go with them (my favourite duo at Costco)
Cereal is cheaper in the regular supermarkets.
Tuna, despite coming in massive quantities, is way overpriced.
Tofu is pretty cheap.
I can't compare prices on most processed foods, because we hardly buy any.
If I didn't have lactose intolerance and didn't need to buy lactase enzyme, we wouldn't bother with Costco. That pays for the membership.
We finally went into Aubut and spent about half an hour checking things out. Really not at all impressed, pricewise. Not at all. On pretty much anything we looked at.
Korean food store
I'll definitely second that. It's my go-to store for just about everything these days.
kosher/jewish food section in supermarket
There is a large Kosher section in the IGA at the Cavendish Mall, informally know as "The Schmall".
The IGA in the Cote St. Luc Shopping Centre is somewhat smaller, but also quite good.
The Loblaws on Cavendish in NDG has a good sized Kosher department as well.
Where's the best burger in Montreal
My deck:)
Couple of teaspoons of Thai green curry paste mixed into the meat, and it just doesn't get any better.
Barring that, La Paryse is the closest thing to homemade I've had in Montreal.
In-season fruit for Jam
I've got a zillion jars of cherry-raspberry cooling on the counter.
West End
Double ditto on Oxford. She abuses the waitstaff something awful. Never ever going back there.
Rocky Montana on Sherbrooke has the best selection of fruit and veg in the 'hood, and the prices can't be beat.
In case it hasn't been mentioned, the Korean grocer as Sherbrooke and Beaconsfield is impossible to walk out of empty-handed.
Also ditto on the CSL IGA fish. Really nice guys, though maybe a bit out of your way.
Don't you dare miss Bucharest, down on Decarie just below Cote St. Luc rd. Fabulous selection of E. European goodies, and to-die-for prepared food as well.
Dad's on Sherbrooke does great homemade Indian to take out, for when you just don't feel like cooking. Not as complex as resto food, but a really good stand-by.
Bonne Bouffe, also Sherbrooke near Wilson does the best Jamaican patties and jerk chicken in the area.
Best chicken of the more conventional kind is Chalet BBQ at Sher/Addington.
authentic mexican
El Meson has been one of my faves for years, since being introduced to it by a Mexican friend. Fabulous location too.
La Louisianne
I'm with you. Once was more than enough, thank you very much. I always binned this joint with Benedict's, another sub-par restaurant that had the rubes lined up and the money printing press humming all night.
Urban farming
I have an Iranian friend whose father had some goats and chickens in their DDO backyard. But not for very long.
Keung Kee
I only have two words to say: string beans. OK, also steamed green bass.
Yum.
Cote St-Luc BBQ
Agreed. Agora's chicken is great, but never EVER get a table near the front, lest you want someone's diapered ass pushing against your table. I speak from experience.
