[Salem] Red's Sandwich Shop
Gotta love Reds! I enjoy their turkey club, the breakfast omelets are off the hook, very decent bottomless coffee (right ? I mean who does THAT?) and the old school diner / luncheonette buzz is the real deal. never had their 'dinner' items but I have chowfriends in Salem and they love the $7.95 (!) pasta specials that are menu staples.

ICOB (Island Creek Oyster Bar), I know you've heard it all before
Thanks, I guess I need to get out more ;-)
5/15/12 Rosa Mexicano Report
Ewww, Why would you ever willingly eat Escolar, the world's most dangerous fish? I am betting the refritos beans were made with lard and butter. Although your review is eloquent and you appear to have liked your meal quite a bit, somehow in the translation I think I will just avoid this place. Sounds like they got the basics right but the adventurous dishes were punky.Going out for the best brown rice ever just isn't very motivating, neither is an 'insipid' potato salad.
help a New Orleanian!
great thread! I do love New Orleans, where polite lunch conversation is about what you had for dinner last night and what you are thinking you might have for dinner later.
So Disappointed at Italian choices on North Shore
There's little middle ground between the neighborhood pizza place that makes a few red sauce dishes and 62 Wharf. Maybe I will try Bella Verona again, or Petrillo's.
So Disappointed at Italian choices on North Shore
Ugh...I had an awful meal at Bella Verona....I swear it all tasted canned and was about a step up from cafeteria food.
So Disappointed at Italian choices on North Shore
Za-bayonze in IPS is actually a B/B+ experience with good pasta, veal, seafood, salads and the love is there. 62 Wharf has artisan Italian no doubt but overall I consider it more of special occasion place that executes a broad range of cuisines. Another thread mentioned the Adriatic in Salem but have not seen any reviews on CH. I happen to work in S. NH so I might venture there for dinner. I drive to Boston to eat so......
So Disappointed at Italian choices on North Shore
I know the owners Stephanie and Mark and I am sure they would ***appreciate*** knowing you have had bad experiences with the waitstaff there. Never tried their Puntanesca.
So Disappointed at Italian choices on North Shore
No doubt when I am in the E. Boston/Revere/Winthrop area, there are some pretty good choices.
So Disappointed at Italian choices on North Shore
One passable place is Zabiglione in Ipswich but the rest of the North Shore region is wanting for a really good North End type of joint that gets everything right. Had lunch once at Chianti in Beverly and might try dinner there sometime.
Not sure why the link function is not showing or I would put a link in.
Conference Widow Trolling the streets of Boston in search of Food
you do have unimpeachable taste
Conference Widow Trolling the streets of Boston in search of Food
That is a great link; here's my short list:
North End: Pizzeria Regina for lunch and L'Osteria for dinner
Chinatown: Best Little Restaurant, Peach Farm
March 2012 Openings and Closings
Upper Crust Pizza, Salem - CLOSED. Won't miss ya. Most inconsistent and undeserved praise.
March 2012 Openings and Closings
Looks like it checked out before you could check it out.
March 2012 Openings and Closings
The Conomo Cafe in Essex (across from Woodman's) was finally sold and there is construction ongoing....so stay tuned for updates. Essex for all its noteworthiness could use a change-up from the SOS...perhaps a 'spring 2012' opening is in the offing.
Rt 1 Lynnfield question
The Ship is now 'The Mt. Vernon at The Ship" and is the same group that owns the classic Mt. Vernon which seems to cater to the 80+ demographic. Must be tough competing with The Continental but Rt. 1 is a gastronomic wasteland with the exception of Pho 888.
Andrina's Pizza - Arlington - Best pizza I have had in MA
Hard to believe we ID'd a place BassMan has NOT chowed! Mark this thread!
Casa Romero?
Exactly my experience per LeoLioness and theuninvitedguest. A gesture of rice and beans would have made the plate look less lonely but the overall presentation and service showed a lack of interest in the customer's experience. They might be a good candidate for Restaurant Impossible as they've gone way downhill.
Casa Romero?
I stopped going there after two lackluster performances of both food and service. Sol Azteca is IMNTBHO a much better option.
Andrina's Pizza - Arlington - Best pizza I have had in MA
Will have to check it out. I grew up in the NY 'tri state' area and you are right that Boston pizza by comparison is generally severely lacking. I also like Nicola in Arlington.
no lobstertail in MA?
The entire regulation is for FROZEN lobster, NOT fresh. If you have a restaurant you can take a fresh lobster out of your tank, cut the tail off, or not, grill it, fry it, steam it, whatever you want. and serve the whole tail or the whole lobster.
Outback sells ONLY frozen lobster so they can't serve the tails, apparently.
no lobstertail in MA?
Is is PERFECTLY LEGAL to sell lobster tail, tails only....look at 2 d below. What you can't sell are the claws. One can also sell UN-shelled crab meat.
The bigger question is what was a Chowhound doing at Outback????

Gloucester + 30 min drive.....recommendations
http://thehappytaco.com might be the truck you seek..being a frequent visitor to the W coast, I pretty much don't eat the local 'Mexican' food because its pretty awful for the most part although there are a few decent enough placed popping up close to Boston lately...reports from the local chat boards on Cape Ann are so-so for the taco truck - expensive and small portions.... The Causeway Restaurant is the deep-fried place with huge portions; not my speed but indeed a local favorite. If you are venturing the the Depot Diner, I think that is in Peabody if I am not mistaken, not a quick trip from Gloucester.
Gloucester + 30 min drive.....recommendations
All the places I listed are open year round.
