Bridal shower venues in Philly for gluten-free bride

To report back: We ended up going with Jake's Wine bar in Manayunk. The food was great and the staff could not have been more friendly and accommodating... Would HIGHLY recommend!

Bridal shower venues in Philly for gluten-free bride

Hi all,
I'm looking to plan a small (

I am not familiar with the area, so am looking for your help! :)

Bride is not traditional, but family is picky (ie. not adventurous) when it comes to food. She is also a big wine fan, so wineries/wine bars would be great.

Thanks in advance for your help!
Best,
Claudia

Oyako Donburi in DC

Hi all,
I'm a recent transplant from the Bay area with a major craving for my favorite Japanese comfort dish- oyako donburi. Any ideas where I might be able to find one in the District?
Thanks in advance!

Has Ebisu reopened?

It's been a while since I've been in the neighborhood! Any chance Ebisu is done remodeling and is open for business again?

Thanks in advance!

Any caviar sightings at Costco?

My boyfriend is from Chicago and his parents can find caviar at their Costco during the holiday season. I was there for Thanksgiving and got to sample some. It's delicious and I believe about $60 for a small tin (not sure of the exact quantity).

Has anyone spotted any caviar at any of the Bay Area Costcos?

Russian River Winery with food for group...winery recs too!

Thanks for the recs. I had planned on calling ahead once we have a list and would be bummed if sunce won't accept our group! if that's the case, are there other wineries in the vicinity with covered patios that might work if we pick up sandwiches to go?

Russian River Winery with food for group...winery recs too!

Heading up to do some wine tasting in the Russian River valley this weekend with sizable group (10-15). I am currently trying to plan our route and need to work in a lunch stop. Given the size of our group and that it is unlikely to be picnic weather, I think a simple winery that sells bread cheese or already made sandwiches is our best bet. Do any of you chowhounds know of such a place? (Does Korbel fit this description?)

While i've got your attention.... what are your thoughts on my short list of potential wineries to visit. We are a diverse group in terms of tastes, wine knowledge / appreciation and budgets:

Rodney Strong
J Vineyard
Arista
Moshin
Russian Hill Estate
Joseph Swan
Sunce

Thanks in advance!

Help me replicate this salad I had in Spain

are you sure that's meat and not tuna? it looks like ventresca (conserved tuna belly) which is usually in elongated thick strips like those on your salad.

otherwise i agree with the white asparagus, piquillos, guindillas and capers

Pimientos de padrone

had some at zarzuela in russian hill last night! delish!

Dinner, a Cosmo, and a Movie

another vote for two! skip the cosmo and go for the royal hound, a fancy greyhound finished with champs- delish!

Foreman Grill vs Toaster Oven - which one should i get?

i have both, and use my toaster oven on a daily basis while my foreman grill hasn't come out of the cupboard in over a year. i totally agree with janet, you can make almost anything in them.
if you're really need a grill option, get a cast iron grill pan, they take up less room and will get you as good of a grill effect as the foreman IMHO!

Napa Help!

you might want to start another topic for this, since it's a little different than what the OP asked.

that said, i'll give you my $0.02. we rented a limo to take a bunch of us up to napa for the day a few years ago. i believe it came to less then $100 a person, although there were more that 2-3 of us. we used mr. limo (http://www.mrlimo.com/) the limos are a little on the older side, but it was by far the best deal and worth every penny. my only advise is to plan out where you want to go and tell the driver, otherwise they'll try to steer you to some cheesy, touristy places (eg. viansa).

Macy's Battle of the Chefs- Anyone been?

I came across a mention of this on a blog or maybe it was tabblehopper...

http://www.rivera-pr.com/calendar.php

i thought sounded interesting, sf iron chef, live- would be entertaining and something to do on a monday night if nothing else. despite emailing for the tickets (i'll describe the process in one sec) less that an hour after the link was live, i was unable to get tickets to the march 10th "battle"...bummer. :(

so i'm intrigued....in order to get tickets you have to submit your name, email and how many tickets you want. they email you with the "payment information" advertised as $10 a person, not bad! anyway, i got an email right away stating that... "The RSVP list is full at this time but we still encourage you to join us as all unclaimed seats will be released and sold on a first-come, first-serve basis..."

so i'm intrigued.....i realize these are hosted by a pr agency.....do you have to be someone they want there to be allowed to purchase tickets?

either way, i'll probably go and check it out...

interested if anyone out there has had a similar experience, was approved to buy tickets or even attended one of these things in the past?

thanks in advance!

Russian Hill

for the italian place, i highly recommend ristorante milano!

Chowish day trip ideas...?

wow thanks for all the great ideas!! keep them coming!

Chowish day trip ideas...?

the bf and i are looking to get out of the city and take a day trip this saturday. mostly what motivates our lives is what/where we're goining to eat next, so i'd love it if the trip had a chowish persuasion. we've done several wine countries (sonoma, napa, livermore, santa cruz) so are looking for something a little different. also, we don't want to stay over night hence the day trip title.

thanks in advance!

Food Mysteries of San Francisco

i'm a big fan of the bagelry at polk and broadway....really good bagels!

Best Sushi platter's to go in SF

what to do with a bag of kraft grated parmesan cheese?

i grabbed it by accident, meaning instead to take home a bag of grated, meltable italian cheeses. . .to well, melt on things. instead i came home with this. the texture is wierd and it doesn't really behave like normal parmesan, probably due to stabilizers and additives.

i hate to waste food. . .any ideas on a use for this stuff or should i just pitch it?

thanks in advance!

recent fleur de lys experiences?

nothing what-so-ever!

recent fleur de lys experiences?

i went a few months ago and had the exact same experience as senor bauer.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/10/17/FDBKRGPFN.DTL&type=food

food was good, ambiance nice (a little overdone for my taste), and quite, but the service was TERRIBLE!! we waited 45 minutes to place our orders and from then on could never get the waitresses attention during our meal. the sommelier seemed to be the only person employed there with any sense of reasonable service, in fact he fetched our waitress for us more than once.

i'm generally tolerant of service issues, but come on, if you're going to charge those prices get it together! i wasn't even paying the bill and left feeling ripped off since i wasted a perfectly good graduation celebration dinner there!

i will never return nor send anyone their way.

Au Gratin Potatoes---Your Best, Please

we made the 2 potato gratin from epicurious as part of my mother's 60th bday celebration - delicious!!! i highly recommend it!

What Should I get at SPQR?

we loved the the tuna conserva salad and the chantrelle mushrooms with sunchokes. shared the lamb chop entree which was also delicious, for those readers who do eat meat!

Where to buy small glass bottles in bay area

i made some limoncello to give as holiday gifts, and now am looking for some small glass bottles (around 4 oz) to fill with it. anyone know of a local place where i might be able to get my hands on these? i've looked online but don't really want to wait for the shipping.
thanks in advance!

Help me clean out my fridge. . . .

My mom was in town last week and we went on a bit of a shopping and cooking spree, leaving me with a fridge full of yummy ingredients and leftover to wrestle with.

I'm not complaining, but the BF is not a huge fan of leftovers and we've been eating out a lot this week with friends so I'm struggling to use everything up. I'd like to make a few one-pot-type dishes with what I've got (to maybe freeze some) and we're going over to a friends on Sunday to watch the Colts-Pats so I'd like to make something to take along.

I have most of the pantry staples (eggs, onions, garlic, chicken broth etc.) and the stuff in the fridge includes:

grilled sausages (chicken apple and kielbasa)
swiss chard
a small sunchoke (never used before)
2 roasted chicken breasts (i ate the dark stuff! :))
asparagus
pork chops marinating in garlic and paprika
roasted cubed potato and sweet potato
baby artichokes with ham

Please help me clean out my fridge!

Thanks in advance!

2007 - Oakland's Day of the Dead Festival on Sunday Oct 28th

wow. thanks for the info!! my mom is visiting this weekend and i was unsure what we'd do on sunday. . . . now i know!
thanks rworange!

Wanna buy kielbasa. . .

I'm a native pittsburgher and in preparation for this sunday's stillers game i was hoping to acquire some kielbasa to serve to some friends. i'm sad to say that i haven't purchased kielbasa since moving out west and an unsure where to pick some up. . . .

can i get it at a regular grocery store? or do i have to scout it out somewhere special? if so, any ideas where? oh, i forgot to add: in san francisco please!

thanks in advance!

New job in downtown Oakland, looking for lunch places

that's right, i managed to unstick myself from the powerful adhesive that is graduate school and went and got myself a "real job".

turns out that job is in oakland, a place i know nothing about, and have only visited previously to use the airport; oh, and one purposefully forgotten raiders-steelers game :(

i work at 20th and harrison, have limited time for lunch and will be on foot, but am willing to spend my time walking to a great place and back for worthwhile takeout to eat at my desk!

so far i've eaten at the whole foods, a few sandwich places across the street and golden lotus (veggie vietnamese). these are the places on my short list to try out:

peony
shanghai restaurant
luka
ba vo
pho 84
phnom penh house
spices 3
tamarindo antojitos

what am i missing? and what should i order/avoid there?

thanks in advance!!

Near North Dining on a Monday Night?

Looking for a recommendation for a restaurant on the near north side that's good for conversation and open on a Monday night.

Thanks!
