Kansas City downtown?
Downtown Options:
Stay at Hotel Phillips or the Hilton President Hotel. These are the two best hotels downtown. For dining, there are many great options that are somewhat spread out. If you want the best pedestrian experience downtown, you need to go to the Power and Light District. If you decide the P&L route, try Bristol
(http://www.bristolseafoodgrill.com/) for a more sophisticated dining experience or Chefburger for gourmet burger joint.
But, if you're gonna stay in KC, you should at least visit the Plaza as it offers the best pedestrian experience in the city, plus it's only about a 10 minute drive from Downtown. P&L is great for dining and bars, the Plaza combines dining and shopping. There is also westport, which has plenty to offer as well and it's between Downtown and the plaza.
For soup:
Try Souperman (only open during lunch), downtown, http://www.kansascitymenus.com/souperman/
or
Happy Gillis Cafe and Hangout, NE of downtown
www.happysoupeater.com
Murray's Ice Cream 2008 (Kansas City, MO)
They also do wonderful sugar cookies and frozen hot chocolate.
Big Hot and Gooey Cinnamon Rolls in KC.
Big Momma's is awesome. By far, the best roll I've ever had in KC. I always thought Corner Cafe had decent rolls, but Momma's is sooo much better.

Restaurants near Kauffman Stadium, KC
My two cents:
Bill-
I think you'll find Kauffman a great place to watch a game. I also recommend LC's and Gates as they are pretty close to where you'll be saying. However, since you're coming from Toronto and I'm guessing you don't pass through KC too often, I would strongly, strongly recommend that you get out a little further and explore the real food experience that KC has to offer. Areas like downtown, the crossroads, and the plaza will offer everything you're looking for and at all price levels. Every area is within a 15-20 minute drive from where you will be staying. The immediate area in which you are staying has nothing to offer in terms of food culture, but it awaits you just a short drive away.

New to Kansas City
Welcome to KC.
When I was a student at UMKC (just a few blocks south of the Plaza) I always went to Muddy's. Haven't been there for a while, so I can't speak to their current state of affairs, but I always enjoyed it. Muddy's is basically at 51st and Oak. There is also a pretty good pizza place (Pizza 51) and chinese (Kin Lin) as neighbors.

KC - Are Kids and Good Food Mutually Exclusive!?!
Cool. Sarah's might be my new favorite place in town. Pizza Bella is great too. Once all the Power and Light District Places open in the next few months, there will be even more great places to take kids as well.
KC - Are Kids and Good Food Mutually Exclusive!?!
I find Nick and Jakes to be a great place for kids without compromising good food. Los Corrals on 9th street is a good Mexican joint and I often see kids there. I think Sarah's on Grand for lunch is good too.
LC's Hamburger new location-KC
I've been there several times and they taste exactly the same. Highly recommended. Cheeseburger goodness.
