True. Food is very nice but not my kinda place.

Boker's Bitters?

I like a drop or two in a Martini, especially if I'm stuck with a bland, cheapie gin.

Martinis without Vermouth - The New Normal (At Least in LA)

Thinking of you all at a happening Brooklyn restaurant this week: I order a Martini, not too dry. Bartender tells me he never puts vermouth in his Martinis. I say, please, definitely vermouth in the Martini. Bartender says stonily, I don't put vermouth in my Martinis. He put it in but it wasn't very good anyway. House cocktail wasn't so hot either. Food was great, though.

Martinis without Vermouth - The New Normal (At Least in LA)

Funny, I feel like I had better luck (in regular restaurants and bars) in the '90s than today. Of course, I always looked for the most mature bartender....

What, no "cherry juice" tipped in from the maraschino cherry sludge?

(in reply to Alcachofa)Years ago, you could expect a real martini in lots of places, and some of the best were in steakhouses. It's a simple standard. There are so many reasons this has gone downhill (vodka, spoiled vermouth, poor training, bravado...) but there is no reason any bar should not be able to still do this, it's hardly necessary to be expensive or cocktail-crafty, it's two standard ingredients, made cold.

Best Coffee for a Percolator?

Thanks for reviving this thread. As much as I like dark roasts, they don't seem the best for the percolator. I'm favoring Ethiopian. And the NYC blend from Oren's.

Right, hazelhurst. The atomizers were gifty items.

Another trick is to order Hendrick's, so it is softer and doesn't knock the top of your head off. Or watch the bartender and keep saying "MORE!" when s/he's adding the vermouth.

Too many rancid olives have forced me to usually order a lemon twist. So sad.

Martinis without Vermouth - The New Normal (At Least in LA)

I adored my martini at Bar Pleiades, had ordered Junipero, "not too dry." Next time in, I began same order to waitress, and then felt silly, said "oh, you always make them great here" and she reminded me I should be making my specific order b/c otherwise they are made without vermouth. I was shocked because drinks there are always excellent.

I see this a lot in NYC too, everywhere from Irish bars to top notch places. You must ask, and request, and even then they often will not comply. Truly demented.

Help fix my Negroni

Absolutely, TBC, that was my first thought, use a less flowery gin. I would not put Citadelle in a Negroni. Beefeater or Bombay (not Sapphire).

I like/love this restaurant EXCEPT for....

Oh, loud music will make me cross anything off my list. It's usually something I hate, in addition to loud.

Donovan's Burger Still Manages to Stand Out

Not inedible or anything, just nothing very good. If memory serves, I've had the fish burger, chicken pot pie, hamburger, tuna salad.... I haven't partaken of the quiche (can't eat that) but I like that they still have a Quiche of the Day! For the Irish bars in the neighborhood, I prefer food at Bliss St. Station or Molly Blooms. Love the bar at Horgan's tho.

Donovan's Burger Still Manages to Stand Out

I love PJ Horgan's for the ambience, but to me their food (burger excepted) is pretty awful. Donovan's burger is good, as are their fries/chips, but I I haven't revisited recently, since the management change. (Not a TV fan, or a sports fan, so I'm not rushing to get there.)

Just to update, it seems they no longer employ bartenders who can mix a cocktail.

Perhaps it was the night I went, but I found you get what you pay for at Domaine. Too bad.

Substituting dry vermouth for dry white wine

I've used it for years, also, a la Mme Child. Just a note for those of you who are keeping it in the cupbord -- please don't! Fridge is where it wants to be. It does go off.

Best "Old New York" Restaurants (stuck in the past)

Go now to El Q. Who knows what will happen as they buff up that Chelsea Hotel. (sigh)

Yep, the Delmonico family sold that location in 1919. We did a Delmonico's issue in my Grade "A" Fancy magazine.

tacqueria real santa fe in sunnyside

This is good news; I did like the Real Santa Fe restaurant and was sorry to see them close. I have not found a neighborhood replacement for it. Haven't been back to Azteca since they changed the name and place slightly -- is it the same, I wonder?

Jury Duty Jamaica Queens

I had something passable a while back at El Familiar, 87-81 Sutphin Blvd. Everything on styrofoam, but I would certainly return if it was jury duty time again. That neighborhood is seriously lacking options.

What's up with the price of Plymouth gin?

Yeah, their last bottle didn't really say art deco to me, it said Premium Vodka. I do like the new flask-style bottle but with the price leap I'll only be drinking it in restaurants. Bombay is a much better deal now. Or if I'm going whole hog it's gonna be Junipero.

Donovan's Woodside Done

I thought that was great news until I saw the new owners on NY1 saying they want to put in more sports TV. I'm very unhappy about that but I hope it will not dominate. That will really affect the character of the place.
