Brownies

Thanks everyone... I think now that the Valentine's hooplah has ended, I'll start my quest and report back if I find anything worth mentioning!

Brownies

You may have just said the magic words - brownie and butterscotch! Is it bad that I want to head there now and I haven't even had breakfast? :-) I'll give them a call at lunch and see if it's available today!

I'd forgotten about Miles of Chocolate... living around the corner from Central Market, that may be my 2nd choice today at lunch...

Brownies

Been a while since I've lurked around the boards... but I find myself currently pregnant and craving BROWNIES. Milk chocolate, dark chocolate, swirled with cream cheese, swirled with peanut butter, etc -- they all sound delightful right now.

I've tried searching previous posts, but haven't come up with many good places to try just yet. I do like the cream cheese/brownie swirl cupcake at Upper Crust, but I'm feeling the need to branch out and try more brownies!!

Any suggestions?

Brunch Lower East Side

Was there room at TRE for a highchair? I'm trying to find a spot for brunch this weekend that won't cringe at a 1 year old but offers a great meal for the adults.

Farfel Noodles - Where to buy?

Yes, yes... the tiny squares that are either in soup or boiled in water/broth and just served with a little butter. :-)

I called her about the "Manishewitz toasted egg noodle - barley shape" that I found at the Food Emporium on 8th Ave and those apparently aren't the right ones. My next stop is the UWS.

Thanks so much everyone for the help! I have a feeling I'll be bringing home a few different brands and then sending friends to buy more once I figure out which one "floats her boat"! :-)

Yipee. Now I'm kind of excited to go hunting for farfel!

Farfel Noodles - Where to buy?

We're staying in Midtown/Hell's Kitchen area - but I've got some free time and can visit other parts of the city if needed.

Farfel Noodles - Where to buy?

I'm visiting NYC for another week and my Bubbe has me on the hunt for farfel noodles. Not matzo farfel (which she claims is just broken piece of matzo), but the kind she says that come in bags like regular pasta. They're round on one side and "not" on the other. (This is her best description. :-))

If this sounds familiar to anyone and you can point me to a market or deli etc in Manhattan that sells these noodles, I'd greatly appreciate the assistance!

Thanks!!

Farfel

My grandmother has me on the hunt for "farfel" a type of Jewish noodle. NOT Matzo Farfel which she claims is just matzo broken into little pieces.

No, the type she's searching for should be in a cellophane bag (similar to what you'd find for generic noodles. She describes them as pasta that are flat on one side and "not" on the other.

If this sounds familiar to anyone -- and you can point me in the direction of a place to purchase said noodles, I'd greatly appreciate any assistance!

Late night wine/coffee shop?

Ended up at Dolce Vita. Nice sorbet, chai tea, dj spinning outside - it was great. There was a steady stream of business there from 9 - 11pm on Saturday night. I'll have to try some other desserts next time... and perhaps stop in for lunch too. The staff was polite, helpful and accomodating.

Late night wine/coffee shop?

She's arriving this Friday... Dolce Vita was at the top of my list since we can walk there, but Hula Hut (or Mozarts) is a great alternative too. I'll give her the options and see what strikes her fancy. :-)

Late night wine/coffee shop?

I'm looking for an alternative to 6th street for a night on the town with a girlfriend. I was thinking about Vino Vino, Cru or something similar - but just learned she's 6 weeks pregnant, so the wine bar is out.

Any other suggestions for a Saturday night out on the town where we can sit, eat, drink, listen to music and catch up?

Strawberry rhubarb pie?

I picked up a pretty tasty strawberry-rhubarb pie at Upper Crust within the past month. My family didn't take long to devour the entire thing... and they do sell by the slice too.

Now Open - Sago (In the Triangle)

Stopped in for dinner last night. Had the "classic" white cheese queso - not at all what I was expecting. I was expecting a small bowl of tex-mex goo (as discussed in another thread) to dip chips and and tortillas into... instead, we got a small oval dish of thick baked cheese with a small dollup of pico on top. Flavor was nice enough, but it was nearly impossible to eat - it was too thick for the chips (we were forced to use utensils to cut off "bites"), and even with the heft of a tortilla - it seemed you were just biting into hunks of slightly melted cheese. The flour tortillas were not store bought - not sure if they were made in house however.

Dinner was the Beef Brisket Tacos. These were pretty good - beef had a nice flavor, was pulled into bite sized strips and was nice and juicy. A little too much red cabbage for my taste in the taco, but it gave a nice contrasting crunch to the beef. A slice of avacodo and a chipotle sauce of some kind topped off each of the tacos. Each of the two tacos was served on a nice thick corn tortilla. I'm not the tortilla expert on the board, but I enjoyed the thick, slighty chewy texture.

Tacos were served with rice and choice of beans -- I really enjoyed the cilantro and honey rice. It was a nice change from the standard tex-mex rice. Black beans were good - nothing to write home about.

I did hear overhear several people that made their way to Sago after seeing the line at Mandola's... which may be how they get their start. I think once the weather warms up a bit - the patio will be a big draw too.

Rudeboy - I have no idea where else to suggest that would offer a similar menu in the area....I'm not familiar enough yet with the area.

Now Open - Sago (In the Triangle)

Got a notice that they are now Open for business. It's in the same complex as Mandola's and the Flying Saucer, but on the Guadalupe side of the complex.

I'm giving them a few days before I walk over and give them a try....

A quick Google search doesn't reveal much about the place, no website or menu that I could find...

Casual Restaurant with Child-light patio

That's it. Vivo. I really enjoy their patio and margaritas. :-)

I haven't had any trouble at Polvo's with obnoxious kids - but I know exactly the type you're referring to. At a restaurant in Dallas recently, I actually went into another room to tell the parents that their kids were running amok and spitting spit-wads at each other and those of us attempting to dine. The response was essentially, oh well. No apologies, nothing. I was appalled.

Casual Restaurant with Child-light patio

While the food is nothing to write home about, the rooftop patio of Iron Cactus tends to be relatively child-free.

What about Polvos? Or the place just east of 35 on Dean Keaton where they give all the ladies a rose? Argh - drawing a blank on the name. Tex-mex, nice patio....

Wedding Cakes in Dallas

I'll add in my rec for Frosted Art too. Working with Bronwyn and her team was amazing. They took my ideas for design and turned them into gorgeous reality. We alternated layers with Chocolate/Creme Brulee and Silver Pound/Strawberry and White chocolate crumbles.

We just took a chunk out of the freezer for our anniversary - and I think it tasted just as good as it did a year ago!

I did two tastings there as well, one with my Mom and one with the fiance. We never felt rushed and I really liked how they let me mix and match some of their designs with my sketches to create the cake I'd dreamed of....

Flying Saucer to Land in Austin!

Parking is also available on the first two floors of the parking garage for the apartments. There is another garage that appears almost complete on the "backside" of the Saucer. I agree, parking will always be awful here, but hopefully the new garage will ease some of the woes as other restaurants start opening too.

Fuegos

Hubby and I also decided to venture out to Fuegos about a week ago. Mixed review from us I have to admit. He had the crab enchiladas of which there wasn't a spec of food left on the plate. I had enchiladas - ordered one chicken, one cheese, one beef to get the widest variety on one visit. Chicken was seasoned well, big chunks, super moist. Cheese was good - not too melty or too overpowering. The beef however, it was carne asada - was awful. It was tough, gristly, fatty -- I ate one bite and that did it. I'll definitely try again, but I may skip the beef enhcilada. Rice and beans got favorable reviews from both of us, and DH was thrilled to see Horchata on the menu. He drank 3 glasses!

We arrived around 6 pm and grabbed one of the last tables. By the time we left, there was quite a wait. I wish them luck. We'll be back to try a few other items....

Valentine's Day Set Menu

We met on the 15th, so that's always the night we go. I'm not sure if it's an advertised special or not... but the 3 or 4 times that we've been on the 15th, MP has always offered the Valentine's Big Night Out special to us on the 15th for I *think* around $120 when the night before it was $150.

Valentine's Day Set Menu

Spacey me... I forgot to mention that we make our reservations for Feb 15th - and the deal is normally $30 off from the night before. :-) Same menu.

Valentine's Day Set Menu

It's now tradition with my husband and I... but we always have the Valentine's special at the Melting Pot. The package includes discounts on wine, some sort of goodie bag, and a gigantic feast. The new location here in Austin has great individual booths with frosted glass doors, so you have the romantic/secluded feel... even in a crowded restaurant.

Semi-Veggie Anniversary

We recently had a great semi-veggie birthday dinner at La Traviata. I'm not strict veggie - so I didn't inquire if our dishes were made with chicken broth for example, but we both had non-meat dishes that were quite tasty. Hubby had butternut squash gnocci and I had risotto with parmesan and truffle oil. I thought the gnocci was a bit soft in texture, but the taste was excellent. The risotto was smooth, and done just to my liking....Add in a salad and dessert (no wine) and our meal was quite reasonably priced I thought.

Cheap Wedding Cake Places???

I've also known many people who get a small "show" cake for the ceremony (and to keep for the anniversary) then pull out a sheet cake from the kitchen to slice and serve to the guests.

I agree however that not all wedding cake is bad. I happened to LOVE my cake. But it wasn't cheap, nor was it in Austin. I have ordered cakes from Lucy's as mentioned for anniversaries and other get togethers. Quite tasty.

You may also want to try Russell's. I don't know their prices, but their cakes and pastries are delightful. http://www.russellsbakery.com/

Panchito's at ABIA

Hmmm... It was still Matt's as of November 8th when I landed. Granted, it was late and I wasn't paying close attention... but I know the sign still said Matt's. Curious to hear what Cousin Dave sees upon his return.

Business Dinner

Perhaps my business dinner included a few too many of the margaritas? I don't recall the food being either stellar or horrible. We did enjoy the patio seats however.

Eddie V's - while great food, I didn't think felt very "casual". The parmesan crusted sole was quite excellent. I haven't tried Vespaio yet -- but perhaps when my coworkers come to town next...

Good to read the suggestions and reviews.

Buffetts?

I just got home from a great brunch buffet at Moonshine's (3rd/RedRiver). $15/per person for a great home cooking style brunch. My only complaint is that I ran out of room to try a bit of everything. I loved the Hoss's Migas, the Green Egg Scramble with pesto and parmesan, and the white chocolate bread pudding... Friendly staff a surprise treat for a Sunday brunch.
