French Onion Soup Dumplings

The seriouseats one is different. The Habeas Brulee recipe is indeed an attempt at Stanton Social's french onion soup dumplings though.

Can you recommend good restaurant for a 40th Bday on Westside?

La Cachette Bistro has French-Mediterranean tapas, not too much money and they do a deal if you're doing a party. Not sure what time they open but 5pm seems pretty standard. Here's a review of their tapas: http://bit.ly/fbRFqu

Italian spot in Los Feliz, Glendale or Pasadena?

Celestino in Pasadena is pretty good. I like the mushroom souffle and their orange ricotta cheesecake.

I've been meaning to try the previously-1-Michelin-starred Tre Venezie too.

NYer's HAVING 1 DINNER IN LA

I agree with perk, it helps to know what kind of ppl they are, what type of food and scene they're looking for. I love Hatfield's but you'd be on the upper end of your budget. Also, places like Hatfield's, Lucques, New York probably does them better. I'm usually more inclined to bring them to places they lack in NYC, like Korean and Mexican ..

Any musts in Madrid and Estepona?

I'm heading to Madrid and Estepona (Marbella) at the end of the year. Are there any must-not-miss in these cities?

Some restaurants I looked at before are closed for the holidays, so I'm looking for new suggestions

Thanks in advance!

Ludobites Hatfields Food trucks

Ludobites' last day is Dec 5 I think.

How about Eva in the old Hatfields space? They do sunday suppers for $35 (http://gourmetpigs.blogspot.com/2009/10/eva-restaurant-sunday-family-dinner-and.html
)There are other good, unpretentious restaurants. What type of food are you looking for?

I've heard wonderful things about the Tasting Kitchen in Venice too, which would be very close to you. I personally really like Ado, which is on Main St, around the corner from ABK. Very cute Italian place (http://gourmetpigs.blogspot.com/2009/...).

As far as food trucks go, I think these are interesting: Manila Machine, Ta Bom (Brazilian, haven't tried), Ahn Joo, Street Hawker (Singaporean, tho menu seems limited. Also haven't tried).

BTW, I think we have a more varied Mexican food here than in SF, like La Casita Mexicana, La Huasteca, Pal Cabron. Keep an open mind :

Providence full tasting vs Melisse 10 course anniversary

Yes and no, I've had mind blowing desserts there and some not so great.

Salt and pepper ice cream were not my thing ... Miso cheesecake last time was ok but wasn't as great as my first experience at Providence.

Dining Room at The Scotch Malt Whisky Society [Edinburgh]

he Scotch Malt Whisky Society is a members-only club where you can enjoy specially bottled and rare whiskies from around the world. While a membership will cost £100, it turns out that the Edinburgh location (their first location) has an attached restaurant that is open to the public.

The food at SMWS is indeed expensive, especially considering the currency conversion, but apparently if you come early enough they have a special 3-course menu that’s reasonably priced. Alas, we didn’t make the cut and had to order a la carte.

First, amuse bouche. Where else would your amuse bouche comes with a glass of whisky?
Our complimentary amuse bouche (chicken with crispy celery and chutney) was served with a 22 year old Glen Ord.

For my entree I ordered the Olive oil poached salmon, crab cannelloni, vine tomato reduction (£18.95)
I loved the salmon which was poached perfectly, melted in my mouth and was very flavorful. I should've eaten more salmon while I was in Scotland! The tomato sauce worked well with the salmon and was not overpowering. The creamy sauce on the crab cannelloni I found a little too rich however, and masked the crab flavor somewhat.

One of my friends ordered the Wild Mallard, beetroot, cabbage hearts, consommé with buckthorn (£19.50)
I had a bite of this and it was very gamey. Game meat in Scotland and the US seem to be on quite different levels. None of us have had buckthorn before and while some disliked the tartness, I thought it worked pretty well with the mallard.

At this point, people were ordering Laphroaig and other commercially available whiskies, but I wanted to see their whisky list. Wow. The sense of humor was unexpected.

“October Outturn. A Voyage into the Unknown.”
October OutturnYep, that’s what their October list was called. Oh, and how they “name” their whiskies. Well, they don’t quite go by the names, but the cask number. Still, the descriptions were rather entertaining.

Here’s what I ordered: Cask no. 85.21 distilled in 1999, “Fruitcake in an old theatre” is a 10-year old whisky aged in refill ex-sherry butt from an Elgin distillery. The notes mentioned words such as "grandma's syrup sponge pudding" (whatever that may be), sweet tobacco, leather (hence the old theatre?), and Jaffa cake (again, not sure ...).

(Other orders included one described as a "medicine cabinet").

I had to have dessert and ordered the Blackcurrant poached pear, pistachio olive oil cake, vanilla mascarpone (£6.95)
Poached Pear, Pistachio Olive Oil Cake
This also did not disappoint, from the moist pistachio olive oil cake to the sweet and refreshing poached pear.

We had a great celebration at The Scotch Malt Whisky Society with good food and a great selection of whisky. Of course, everyone had a blast reading the October cask list. Paying the annual membership fee is probably not reasonable if you're only visiting UK, but I found The Dining Room provided great access to the members' whisky perks. Well, minus taking home bottles.

Providence full tasting vs Melisse 10 course anniversary

Tough choice and it'll be great either way. Melisse may be more "traditional".

Although as most said, Providence is the place for seafood, their full tasting certainly offers a whole lot more than seafood (foie gras, veal, squab are usually in the books) in case that was going to be a deterrent

Wakasan on Westwood

As bulavinaka says, it's *kaiseki* not omakase.

Last I went (ok 2 years ago) it was $35 for 12 courses that includes king crab legs, sashimi, and chirashi (with uni). Not a bad deal and you'll definitely be full.

They can accomodate your food preferences. I didn't have any pork within those 12 courses so no pork should be pretty easy.

I tried out Cham Korean Bistro last week and I enjoyed the hot sizzling bibimbap (which I got bcs of J Gold's review of it)!
