Restos Near Little Compton RI
Driving to Little Compton for a couple of days at the beach. Any recommendations for good local restos or food stands? Seafood, hot dogs, whatever else is good, local.
Portland Maine Lunch Resto
Any recommendation for a v. good lunch restaurant in Portland Maine on a Friday afternoon?
Coffee Roaster in Somerville
Looking to buy fresh roasted coffee beans somewhere in Somerville/Cambridge that is not Whole Foods. Anyone aware of a coffee shop or other retail concern that roasts their own beans? Is True Grounds in Somerville worth trying? Judging by their horrendous website I have my doubts.
Good lattes and comfy seating like Diesel?
Bob - I'm curious: what is the principle that keeps you out of Bloc 11?
Craigie on Main- fantastic special occasion dinner
The menu seems to show great disdain for those who don't eat meat. Is there anything on the menu that would appeal to those who find marrow and tongue a bit off-putting?
not a treatise on the relative merits of the river street whole foods
However, I am bewildered by the move toward prepared foods at the expense of inventory. Does WF know something about the economy that the rest of the world doesn't? Are we to assume that buying prepared food at unreasonably high prices somehow trumps the purchase of ingredients at unreasonably high prices to be used in the preparation of home-cooked meals? Are they in league with the restaurateurs around town in an effort to make people forget how to cook? Are there any answers? Am I alone in bemoaning this dumbing down of the inventory?
Where to Buy Pumpkin Pie?
Big raucus family has requested that we urbanites from the northeast bring a pumpkin pie or two to a thanksgiving gathering. So, any opinions about the best place to purchase said pie in the Boston area (and no, I don't want to make my own). Thanks in advance!
Mary Chung's disappointing again
Have to admit that I still really like the Suan La Chau Show, but the dun dun noodles have become incendiary -- not a recent event either. They turned up the heat years ago and now that's all you taste.
Vinnie's at Night
I'm with you, dulce. I think the reputation of this place is more about the novelty of its "architecture" than the quality of the food. Dreary place, low-rent food.
A Tale of Two Bagels
I never understand the Iggy's bagel fans. Must be extreme lovers of seeded cardboard. Kupel's is the most underrated of local bagels simply because it is not the cliched gunk that most Americans think when they think of bagels.
Closest thing to NYC Bagels in Boston - VOTE!
Absolutely Kupel's - consistently the best. Of course the whole conversation is ridiculous -- just what the hell is a "New York Bagel"?
Brasserie Jo anniv. deals and more
A peach martini is hardly a martini, large or small. It's a frou-frou drink that should come with a bamboo umbrella. Make sure you ask for one from the nice french bartender.
Central Sq. Farmers' Market vs. Copley?
I've frequented the Central Square farmers market over the years and consider it one of the best. You'll probably find many of the same vendors there that you find in Copley but maybe not the Iggy's of the world -- which is neither good nor bad. In any event, highly recommended.
Fresh Pita
Is there anywhere in the South End that makes/has delivered fresh pita bread - meaning something other than Joseph's or other supermarket brands?
LaGroceria, Cambridge closing...
La Groceria gave up the ghost a long time ago. Now if only someone would do something with the old Nightstage building across the street.
Sunset Grill
If I were making recommendations to out of town visitors about good/interesting restos and bars to visit, Sunset Grill would NOT be on the list. Please . . .
Raw Peanuts
Anyone know where raw peanuts can be found? I need them to make a peanut sauce for sesame noodles (dan dan noodles). I used to be able to get them at the River Street Whole Foods in Cambridge but they mysteriously disappeared from the shelves a few months ago and have not reappeared, even after assurances that they would be reordered.
House made veal stock? (a la Capone's Chicken stock)
The South End Formaggio has veal stock (http://www.southendformaggio.com/) and I suspect the one in Cambridge does as well.
Picco/Costello's
Must admit that I agree with this post - similar experience with the disengaged staff and serious attitude problems vis their clientele. Cannot corroborate the burnt experience and I do rather like their chili but always have trepidations over going there.
Hit and miss at Zoe's Somerville
Never have understood the popularity of this place. My experience is the food is bland, just average or below average typical chinese diner food. And the ambience of the place is defined by its total lack of ambience. I just don't go there anymore.
Good Bagels in Brookline
Couldn't disagree with you more. If you consider doughy fat unfathomably dense bagels a la Breuggers et al as the best, then yes, Kupels doesn't cut it. Even my New York bagel eating freinds agree that Kupels is by far the best.
Where can I find veal stock?
In Somerville, Cambridge or Boston -- I tried Savenor's and a few other places with no luck.
