Where should I buy my whole prime rib roast? (Saratoga Springs)
I live in Saratoga Springs and have been very happy with the meat I have bought and the service at Sanders Meat Market. They are on Rte 50 south between Saratoga and Ballston Spa, in Carousel Village on opposite side of road from the Ocean State Job Lot. They do sell prime beef, not choice beef.
I have also heard good things about Fred the Butcher In Halfmoon (on Rte 9). I have a coworker who lives in Loudonville but goes up to Halfmoon to buy her meat there.
Saratoga Springs November 2-5
I recommend the fish and chips at The Local also. Neat place but does have limited seating, good draft beer selections also. For Indian we enjoy going to Little India, have not yet been to Karavalli. If you have transportation available I would recommend Harvest and Hearth for wood fired gourmet pizza, one of my favorite places to eat, expensive for pizza, but has high quality organic ingredients. Great salads there too-love the Mamie's poppy salad.

Best dinner choices in Malone and Saranac Lake?
In Saranac Lake we ate at both the Asian Buffet and Casa del Sol on our June camping vacation to Rollins Pond.
I agree that the Asian Buffet is very good. The food was replenished often and tasty.
I was also impressed with the cleanliness of the restaurant. We went on a rainy night and the food and atmosphere was very much what we needed.
We also enjoyed our meal at Casa Del Sol. At Casa I got the Aztec Torta with both red and green sauce and beef filling and was happy with my choice. I got a margarita also, but like the ones at Mexican Connection in Saratoga Springs better.
Dirt Cheap but good wines
We recently tried Oxford Landing GSM (Grenache, Shiraz, Mourverde blend) which goes for $5.95 at our local wine store. This is a nice summer red, good every day drinking red which is a nice wine for the price.
"Hole in the wall" Italian (Ballston Spa or nearby)?
I have not been, but I bet they were referring to Augie's
Jose Malones, Troy NY
Hubby and I ate here for first time on Tues 8/18/2009. Both of us ordered pulled pork enchalidas which were yummy. They tasted like they may have had a hint of cinnamon and orange in them. I had a house margarita lighty salted, which was good. The house margarita is discounted by $1.00 on Tuesdays. We would definitely go back here and both enjoyed our meals.
Top Pizza in Capital Region?
If you are around Saratoga I would recommend Harvest & Hearth The pizza is wood fired with top notch ingredients such as nitrate free sausage. I have eaten here 3 times and enjoyed it each time. ( I would go more often but it is expensive for pizza). The pizza is also good at the Village Pizzeria in East Galway, on Rte 29 west of Saratoga. Both places have web sites with menus. From your list I have had pizza from the Fireside in Schenectadty and Smith's Tavern in Voorheesville and would rate the places I mentioned above as definitely worthy of being included on your list.
Shiraz/Viogner blends
I third recommendation for Yalumba. Best price I have found for this is $8.95 for Yalumba Y Series Shiraz (10% Viognier). This is a regular buy in our house.
New Saratoga restaurant
We tried the Harvest & Hearth on Sunday night and liked it, but it is a bit pricey for pizza. The two pizzas we tried were "The Natural" and "The Epiphany". Both were good, but we really liked "The Epiphany". Beware that the small size pizza is VERY small. We also had "Organic Peak Pale Ale" pint drafts that we enjoyed.
Mexican food in Saratoga Springs, NY
I do not think Mexican Connection's food is bad. I have been a customer there for over 20 years and while slightly overpriced for Mexican, I enjoy going there. Their margaritas are good, complimentary chips and salsa, and generous portion sizes. They do a good year round business in Saratoga and have a loyal clientele, so while they may not be the best Mexican compared to other areas, they are obviously pleasing to some people. I would give them a try and see what you think.
Pizza in Saratoga Springs, NY
I will third the recommendation for Village Pizzeria in East Galway. We usually get their pesto pizza (white pizza with pesto, mozzarella, olives and red peppers) and add ricotta cheese. It is fantastic! Their red pizza is great also. I live in Saratoga Springs but usually travel slightly out of town to get pizza. Publik House in Malta (Rte 9 south) is pretty good, Ferrettis at exit 10 off Northway (Clifton Park) has good pizza with crust rolled very thin, but with a puffy big outer crust, and for wood fired pizza Mangia Cafe in Clifton Park (exit 9 in same shopping plaza as Kmart). We love pizza and will travel to eat it out!
Saratoga group dinner
Longfellows does take reservations, please see their web page. You are correct that their sister restaurant Olde Bryan Inn does not. Longfellows would probably have space for a large group, but they are more pricey than $15 per person. A plus for Longfellows is a very nice atmosphere, however last time I went (Aug 2007), I thought the food and service were not as good as times past. You would definitely need a car to get there. Publick House ditto on needing a car, this is a casual pizza, pasta and sandwich place, totally not in same category as Longfellows. I am not sure if they take reservations. I have only ever had pizza there which is good. I would recommend looking at the restaurant right across the street from the Publick House which is The Ripe Tomato. They have a website to check out. The menu is pretty diverse and most everyone in a group would find something to their liking to order. I have not eaten at Gaffney's for years, have never been to Horseshoe Inn, went once to Leon's and it was ok, but I prefer Mexican Connection to Leon's. Mexican Connection also has a website and does take reservations. It is good, but a little high priced for Mexican. We usually go to Mexican connection 4 to 5 times a year and are long time customers. Do not worry about non smoking section for any place, it is not a factor in your selection. Thankfully all the restaurants are nonsmoking by law and it is fantastic! Hope this has been some help (I am a Saratoga Springs resident).
