Anyone done Wurstkuche?

Simply because some of us are less familiar with Germanic pronunciation than for example, French or Spanish, does not make for a poorly named restaurant. Comme Ça - for instance or Guelaguetza.

Quiche to-go in Studio City, Universal City

Try Chez Nous on Riverside just East of Cahuenga. They have pastries that are good and I believe they may have quiches. Also, La Pain Quotidien on Ventura just West of Coldwater. There is also a small bakery called Big Sugar on Ventura just West of Laurel Canyon on the South side of the street. There is also always Porto's in Burbank / Toluca Lake - on the corner of Magnolia and Hollywood Way.

The Foundry?

Just got back from dinner at The Foundry on Melrose. Barf. Four of us shared four appetizers and we all had four different entrees. The appetizers were passable, but definitlely trying too hard. The entrees were not good. The chicken was disgusting. I would compare it to a poor business class airline dish. Most of the dishes had components that were cool in temperature amidst hot and warm components. The best dish we had was the halibut. I seem to be having a basic problem with fine dining anymore. It's just bombastic and unsatisfying from city to city. I just spent some time in Chicago and was underwhelmed there as well. Same with New York. I wish we could get someone to focus on the food and to quit trying to perform acrobatics and combining disparate ingredients. It's just no fun and totally not worth the money we're being asked to pay. The same group of us had a completely uninspiring, horribly serviced meal at Craft. Thank goodness that Osteria Mozza was as good as it was anticipated to be. I drank a Underberg the second I got home to try to help the mess in my stomach. Sorry for the negativity, but I'm getting tired of paying to try these awful attempts at high-end food.

cold soba noodles in LA

Yabu on Pico near Bundy is very good. They make their own soba noodles. I love cold soba. Thanks for the idea - now, I know what I'm having for dinner.

Going to Asanebo for Omakase tonight! What should I expect?

Funny. I had just called my wife to see if she wanted to go tonight. You can expect a very nice tasty dinner. I love sashimi and they handle it beautifully.

father's office

You either like it or you don't. Not really worth arguing regarding "arrogance" and "hip". It's a really decent burger. Not my favorite anymore, but the whole thing is worth trying once. That way everyone can make their own decision whether they want to put up with the whole process or not. I'm a beer geek and I know there's a lot of innacurracies with what S.Y. says about some beer related things - and even though the bartenders are supposedly trained and even have to brew their own beer before going on the floor - they aren't that knowledgeable after all. Regardless, I think the beer selection is pretty good for a place in LA that also serves really good food. The special salad - Frisee aux lardon is really good when they have it. I know that when I go - I go right when they open - walk right in and sit at a table or the bar - wait for friends or open a book and enjoy myself. Also, there's nothing wrong with "no substitutions" - it's not stupid. It's this guy's business and that's how he wants it. If you don't like it - don't go. I never understood the uproar about places with no substitutions. Similar to Hungry Cat - which I think has a better burger.

Where should I have omakase for the 1st time???

I think Asanebo should be on the list. Maybe a tad bit expensive - but totally worth it. It's pretty much the only place I go anymore. I still try all the others but I keep coming back.

On another topic - your flickr photos have a burger from January titled Shack Burger. Where is that? Is that a hot dog on top? It looks fantastic. I initially thought Shake Shack - but they were closed in January and the onions are wrong as well as the wrapper.

Breakfast at Lucky Devils? Do tell!

I haven't tried it but I saw the menu. It looked very interesting. I can't remember it too well, but they did have a very interesting breakfast sandwich with that amazing bacon.

East Side Italian Deli - NO!

I'm going to third Roma. Such a nice experience. So simple and so much like the Italian neighborhood stores where I grew up in Pennsylvania. His sandwiches are so straightforward and delicious.

Good place for great beers and good food for beer geek's birthday (definitely NOT Father's Office, please!!)

I'm a beer geek - was a falcon - but haven't been brewing as of late because of work. Your question is a very difficult one - because LA hasn't really been able to mix both well - food and beer. I think the burger at Lucky Devil's is really good and the beer selection is pretty good. Boneyard Bistro in Sherman Oaks has a pretty decent beer selection and you can go either BBQ or an upscale bistro for the food choice. I work right by the 3rd Stop and have been there a couple times. I like the food and the beer selection is pretty good but, still kind of uninspired. But, no one seems to have a superior well thought out selection right now. In fact, Otheroom in Venice - even without food is kind of slacking in their beer selection - and I go there often. The Village Idiot has a concise decent selection and the food is good - it's a welcome newcomer to the area. Very low key and unpretentious -yet very crowded. Hope you guys have a good time. Good luck.

Sausage Casings in Los Angeles

European Deluxe Sausage Kitchen on Olympic near Doheny has them. I've purchased them from Gary the owner many times. They are usually in brine. I just ordered some salt packed from Butcher Packer online to test those versus the brined ones. My big question is where can I find fresh pork fatback (not salted)? Most butchers say they need to buy 60lb boxes - so they don't get it. Fatback really makes sausages like spicy Italian have good juiciness and flavor. Jowl fat can be used but is really only good for finer textured sausages such as hot dogs.

Will work for merguez sausages.

I will only add that Rosamunde on lower Haight next to Toronado has fantastic Merguez.

The Counter in Santa Monica is Absolutely GROSS

Gross may be strong, but I get what you're saying. It's just not a very good burger. I agree that the toppings aren't even that good. I prefer that if you're going to offer choices, they should all be good choices. Everything done to the best of their ability. This is definitely not that. Plus, you can't start with a bad bun. The bun is an essential aspect of a good burger. I also don't get why they offer 1/3lb instead of 1/4. If anything is gross, it's a 1lb burger.

Wine/Beer Pairing

http://www.calendarlive.com/search/42...
Campanile has added Friday night wine pairings.
Sona also has a wine pairing
http://www.sonarestaurant.com/menu.php
Hatfield's has a Chef's tasting menu and a reasonable wine list
http://www.hatfieldsrestaurant.com/co...
Ortolan does wine pairings

Hope this helps a little.

Wine/Beer Pairing

Providence offers a wine pairing. http://www.providencela.com/
Blair's in Silverlake is good and has a pretty good beer list for a los angeles restaurant - but no pairing that I am aware of. http://www.blairsrestaurant.com/

There was a restaurant that I remember tried to offer some beer pairings - I'll try to remember and post again.

For wine - a restaurant such as Campanile, Lucques or A.O.C. would be good - they know their stuff in regards to wine - so I'm sure they could put together something good for you.

Where is Tacos Junior Cemitas truck that used to be on Venice/405?

Wondering if anyone knows where that yellow truck has moved to. That was a fantastic Cemitas. I've been craving theirs. I've tried some others. There was a new truck on Venice about a block away -the sandwich was decent - nowhere near as good as Junior's.

Recommendations please - after work drinks in Studio City/Sherman Oaks?

Firefly is a good choice or just a couple storefronts west of there is Next Door Tapas. It's connected to La Loggia Italian restaurant. Much better and calmer than Ole'. Very comfortable. There is also Sapphire, also right in that same vicinity. The other option would be to go sit at the bar at Pinot Bistro near Coldwater on Ventura.

Best Shabu in SoCal

Yoshi's in Sherman Oaks is pretty good. I've been to all the rest and the downtown ones are probably the best(by a little bit) - but, I've become pretty partial to Yoshi's. It's on Ventura Blvd Between Woodman and Coldwater.

best belgian beer selection in scal

The Sierra Madre location of Lucky Baldwin's sells beer to go. Stuffed Sandwich sells bottles to go if you buy some food.
Whole Foods Studio City and Third Street have pretty decent Belgian selections. Cap 'n Cork has a great selection. Vendome in Studio City on Ventura and Vendome on Riverside/Cahuenga in Toluca Lake have good selections. Blair's in Silverlake has a good selection for a restaurant - eat at the bar.

Lucky Devils

I don't know what it is, but my wife and the couple I was with hated the hot dogs as well. I actually loved them. It has to be something to do with what you were raised with. I love the burgers here and the shakes and the very decent beer menu. I would suggest that first timers interested in trying the hot dog split one amongst the table before writing it off. I would guess that at least 1 out of 4 people might like it. I'm going to have another one the next time I go - if I'm not hankering for a burger -which is very doubtful.

Any MEZCAL LOVERS? Where can I find good Mezcal in L.A.?

Vendome Liquors in Studio City carries some. The best brand is the Del Maguey label. They have a bunch of different types. None are cheap. My favorite is the smokiest, Chichicapa. Worth the $70-80.

does anyone remember the name of a breakfast / diner rest on washington....

that Rockenwagner was part owner of? It was west of Lincoln on the south side of washington. It was kind of a modern looking space. At least I think Rockenwagner was owner. It was around probably early 90's.

one lunch near beverly hills.../Cauite pizza

Caioti is the same one and only one. He relocated a couple years ago. He changes the pizza menu about every 6 months. Still good. No liquor license - BYOB. Ed Ladou still runs it. He's the father of california pizzas. He worked for Wolfgang at the original Spago when they started california pizzas. Every so often he has a pizza with a fried egg on it that is fantastic.

Hungry Cat: hot or hyped?

My favorite local. It's not supposed to be some fantastic place, but a simple good choice for a nice casual meal with a couple friends. Great drinks. Great burger. Great oysters. (just had oysters at Kendall's downtown - and was really kind of freaked out by what I was served) I always have good fresh oysters here, much like Zuni in SF. Not everything on the menu is great, but tell me where it is. Everyone has particular tastes, likes and dislikes. I don't particulary care for the lobster roll but a couple of my friends love it. Who am I to tell them that they do or don't know what they're talking about. It's great to be able to go there after a long day at work with someone and sit at the bar, have a great cucumber martini, glass of wine or a beer, some oysters, and a salad and relax. The bartenders are great people and the wait staff is equally personable.
