Han Dynasty

Only eaten their once so I can't say with certainty he's full of crap, but the dan dan noodles I had a few weeks ago were very good and compared well against Szechuan Gourmet, Wu Liang Ye, etc ... Also the service was straight up terrible, but who cares at this type of restaurant.

The rants against sugar and MSG sounded like something more appropriate in a Mark Bittman screed. Both sugar and MSG are delicious. Perhaps they overrused both, but it sounds like he's saying they're bad per se.

What do you do when you are bored/stumped about what to make

But seriously, kimchi and spam fried rice is amazing.

You dice the spam into ~1/4" cubes, crisp them up in a cast iron (20 mins), deglaze with kimchi juice, add chopped up kimchi, add oil as needed and day old rice, put an egg on it.

I get stoned and end up cooking something like kimchi and spam fried rice, or a ridiculous overstuffed quesadilla.

Salted, preserved pork products are a staple in this.

The salami and nutella sandwich produced from this process was ... regrettable.

Barclays Center

The Vanderbilt is perennial crowd pleaser, pretty much good for everyone and you can get in and out relatively quickly eating at the bar.

Kaz An Nou is an amazing French Caribbean BYOB restaurant. Cheap, fantastic food, but small and no reservations so might be tough if you're in a hurry.

Bottles to Get in Europe?

The main value of havana club is it's difficulty to acquire in the US. I've seen more than a few 'speakeasy' bars keep a bottle on their back bar for that reason. It's not a spectacular rum, although I am pretty fond of a 50/50 mix of havana and banks in a daiquiri.

Nikka's just announced they're going to begin U.S. distribution later this year, so you might hold off on this unless you want it right away.

Bitter melon ... Wow that is rough !

I've had some pretty good fried dumplings with pork and bitter melon, it also goes well in stews. But honestly, this may be the one food I just can't like.

To me it tastes like ear wax and no matter how many times I try it, I just can't get used to it.

Battersby: tasting menu or regular?

I've eaten there a couple times, once for the spontaneous tasting menu (which is the same as the reservation tasting menu) and a la carte.

The tasting menu is an amazing deal for $65 and they'll do some pretty great drink pairings to go with it if you ask, though that starts to get a little pricey. If you're doing a la carte for dinner, figure about $40-$50 pp for food, so if you have the appetite there's little reason not go for the full tasting.

Even if you don't have a reservation, walk-ins are possible on off nights and you can eat at the bar. They've also got a backyard space now.

Any of the rare Chartreuse bottlings that aren't available here, e.g. the 1605.

Nikka from the Barrel, and outstanding Japanese Whiskey.
