Super Sunday Indian Parade: Worth going to? Safe? Food? Music?
I am also a seasoned citizen who lives in New Orleans and I wouldn't go near the Super Sunday festivities. As uptownlibrarian said "Bad things do happen sometimes in this city". Just MHO.
New Orleans to Chicago
I agree. It's a cute place if you are in the area. You can see the kitties.
New Orleans to Chicago
WOW! Talk about a complete review. Thanks for the information.
New Orleans to Chicago
I agree with Sarah and Mikey on their evaluation of Mittendorf's food. The onion rings were the prepackaged variety, the catfish is greasy and the stuffed crab was uneatable. So look at me with "some concern" Joel. It's not worth the trip. I look with "some concern" at some of these over-the-top love feast reviews that make me wonder if some posters have husbands or other relatives that are some how connected to Mittendorf's.

I also remember Acy's. Is Tracey's a reincarnation of Parasol's? Also, where is Kid Creole and is it a sit-down restaurant?

Flaking Cast Iron Cookware... How to Fix?
This is what I do. Place the your dutch oven in a self-cleaning oven, set for two hours. When the cleaning cycle is over and the oven can be opened, the dutch oven can be removed, the ash can be removed with a damp sponge, the item dried and it is ready to season.
Just make sure that your oven vents outside. Expect a lot of smoke and flames.
Thanks to John Folse this is how to season or reseason a black cast iron pot.
Directions: Seasoning a New Cast Iron Pot
1. In order to start the process, wash, rinse and thoroughly dry the new skillet or dutch oven to remove the protective wax coating. I recommend drying the utensil over a low flame to remove all moisture from the porous metal, 2-3 minutes.
2. Put two tablespoons of liquid vegetable oil in the utensil. Do not use saturated fat, such as butter or bacon fat, because this fat will become rancid during storage. Use a paper towel to coat the entire surface of the utensil with the oil, inside and out -- including all corners, edges and lids.
3. Preheat the oven to 500 degrees F for 30 minutes. Line a large baking pan or cookie sheet with aluminum foil and turn the utensils upside down, including the lid, to prevent the oil building up on the inside of the pan.
4. Bake the utensils for 1 hour, turn off the heat and allow the skillet or dutch oven to cool completely in the oven with the door closed, 4-6 hours.
5. Remove from oven and wipe with a paper towel. This completes the seasoning process, and you are ready to use your nicely seasoned cast iron skillet.

Borscht
Borscht
Serves: 6
Beet borscht is a traditional soup common in Russian, Ukrainian, and Jewish cooking.
As served at the Russian Tea Room, New York City.
The RTR, as addicts called the place, opened as a tea room in the 1020’s and closed July 27, 2002 less than three years after its spectacular but ill-fated $30 million renovation.
Ingredients:
• 1 cup thinly sliced celery
• 1 cup shredded carrots
• 1 cup thinly sliced onion
• 1 parsnip, finely chopped
• - water
• 1 Tablespoon butter
• 3 cups beef broth
• 1½ cups julienne strips of raw beets
• 1½ cups shredded cabbage
• 1 cup tomato sauce
• - salt
• ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
• - sour cream (garnish)
Method:
1. In a black cast iron pot, barely cover carrots, onion, celery and parsnip with boiling water.
2. Cover pot and allow vegetables to simmer for 15 minutes.
3. Add butter, stock, beets, cabbage and tomato sauce.
4. Simmer, covered, for about 10 minutes or until all vegetables are tender but still keep their shape.
5. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
6. Heat through then ladle into bowl, with sour cream on the side.

King Cake Recipe
Thank you both for the recipes. Here is the story of the King Cake.
The story of the king cake begins, like the story of Mardi Gras itself, with the pagans. They had a celebration where a young man from the village was chosen to be treated like a king for a whole year. He was not denied during his reign, but after the year was over he became a human sacrifice to the gods. To eliminate this pagan custom, the Christian Church encouraged an observance calling for the preparation of a king cake containing a bean; whoever received the slice with the bean became king for a week and was allowed to choose a queen to reign with him. This took the place of the sacrificial pagan rite.
The King Cake tradition is believed to have been brought to New Orleans, Louisiana, from France in the 1870's. It evolved from the Twelfth Night or Epiphany pastry made by those early settlers. They added their own touches with the Spanish custom of choosing Twelfth Night royalty.
In European countries, the coming of the wise men bearing gifts to the Christ Child is celebrated twelve days after Christmas. The celebration, called Epiphany, Little Christmas on the Twelfth Night, is a time of exchanging gifts and feasting. All over the world people gather for festive Twelfth Night celebrations. One of the most popular customs is still the baking of a special cake in honor of the three kings..."A King's Cake" or Gateau de Roi.
A King Cake's ring shape, too, is significant, as some believe it symbolizes the unity of all Christians, and others believe it aptly resembles a king's crown.
A dried bean was originally hidden inside the cake but was replaced by coins, peas, pecans, rubber dolls, porcelain dolls, and in recent years plastic dolls. Starting around the 1930s, a tiny naked baby (Frozen Charlotte) was used instead of the bean or pea. The baby can be pink, brown, or golden. Some people believe that the baby represents the baby Jesus because Twelfth Night was when the three kings found the baby in Bethlehem.
Tradition has it that the person who finds the baby in the king cake is the next queen or king, he or she receives a year of good luck, is treated as royalty for that day and must host the next king cake party.
King Cake season lasts throughout Mardi Gras from the feast of the Epiphany until Mardi Gras Day.
The royal colors of purple, green and gold on the cake honors the three kings who visited the Christ child on the Epiphany. Purple represents Justice. Green stands for Faith. Gold signifies Power.
The three colors appeared in 1872 on a Krewe of Rex carnival flag especially designed for the visiting Grand Duke of Russia. He came to New Orleans just for the carnival, and the universal colors remain his legacy.

Thanks Christie. I have tried the Central Market and found the tamales to be a bit too greasy for my taste. I'm looking for a "Mom and Pop" type operation for my tamale

(DFW/Arlington) Christmas Tamales
La Popular Tamales on the corner of Columbia and Munger in Dallas was exactly what we were looking for. The tamales were awesome, their salsa spicy and the Pico De Guio was nice and hot. The only draw back was there was a sign in the store said "No more Christmas orders after November 25th." But I don't think they mean it....especially if you ask nicely. Thanks Alice.
Willie Mae's Scotch House
I also went to WMSH and experienced slow indifferent service of very average food. I didn't feel particularly blessed to have the opportunity to spend my money there. This is a restaurant folks not a shrine. There is no correlation between the history, the strength, the power and good cooking. Customer support comes with a consistently good product. The new management has to get respect the old fashioned way, they have to earn it. Good luck to a New Orleans icon. How get to work
What's safe to use to finish butcher block?
Despite what you've read elsewhere, almost every wood finish should be considered food-safe.

Please refer to Chuckles the Clone's post above.
Bob Flexner, guy who wrote the book about finishes:
"Food safeness is a non-issue because there's no evidence of any problem. So far as we know, all finishes are safe to eat off of, and safe for children to chew on, once the finish has fully cured."

Solo Bar Dining and Cocktails
I mentioned Clancy's because my wife and I went there to celebrate our 39th wedding anniversary and were greeted by "lost" reservations, an indifferent staff and a very loud group of gentlemen at an adjoining table who used the F word as a verb, adjective, noun and adverb. This was brought to the attention of management to no avail. As I said, if dining in a vulgarity filled room is to your liking this is your place..
I do second the recomendations of Herbsaint and the newly opened MiLa.
Solo Bar Dining and Cocktails
Avoid Clancy's. Clancy's is an overated, overpriced, noisy fraternity house. There are many, many better restaurants in New Orleans. Losing reservations is a hallmark of this place.

I would recommend against bacon fat, because this fat will become rancid during storage.
Quick and Dirty Reseasoning of Cast Iron Pan?
According to Louisiana Chef John Folse
www.jfolse.com
Seasoning and care of a black cast iron pot
Seasoning, the process whereby the pores in cast iron absorb oil and create a natural non-stick finish, is not complicated and shouldn’t discourage first-time cast iron users.
In addition to seasoning, the general care of cast iron is also important. By following these easy steps, you can ensure your cast iron pieces will be around to serve you for a long time to come.
Directions: General Care of a Cast Iron Pot
1. Always wash with a mild detergent, rinse and dry thoroughly. I recommend placing a thoroughly rinsed utensil over heat or flame, 2-3 minutes, to remove any moisture from the porous metal. Never scour or use a dishwasher. (You may use a plastic bun to remove stubborn food particles).
2. Cook food with little water content the first few times. Avoid cooking acidic foods such as tomatoes, unless combined with other food. Uncover hot food as you remove from the heat, because steam may remove the protective coating.
3. Rust, a metallic taste or discolored foods are signs of improper or inadequate seasoning. If this occurs, wash thoroughly and re-season.
4. Since cast iron heats evenly, it is not necessary to use extremely high cooking temperatures. Best results are obtained with medium to medium-to-high temperature settings. Do not overheat or leave empty utensil on the burner. Never place the utensil on an already heated burner; rather, allow the utensil to heat as the burner does.
5. Always store cast iron utensils with tops or lids off so moisture won’t collect inside. Store in a warm, dry place. A paper towel placed inside the utensil will absorb any moisture and prevent rust.
