Turkeys 2013

They had Misty Knolls at Savenors last year and The Meat House in years past. Truly excellent birds. We enjoyed them quite a bit more than the birds from Owens we had in the past.

I was asking an honest question and I'll take that as a no.

Since you mention it, why would I waste a 3 hour round trip and a tank of gas (which isn't free the last time I checked) to save $30 on an 18 pound bird? Yes, Dulock's price works out to $6.66/lb for that size bird, and your much fairer price is $5/lb? Dulock's prices are more than reasonable consider the location and quality of product.

Hey, Where's our Team Spirit? Ribelle Gets FOUR STARS!!****

Actually Ribelle does indeed use PR. Their PR person had been posting on these boards before and around the opening. They did not initially identify themself as PR, but eventually fessed up as the posts were obvious.

(Keep deleting it mods, and I'll keep reposting)

The Tea House was a real loss. It was the perfect inexpensive lunch of the best vegetarian Chinese food in the area. It was such a tease; they closed for their usual holiday break, then extended it through Jan, the Feb, then indefinitely, and eventually no sign at all... I live in the area that would be included in any public hearing notice for that space and haven't seen anything.

What's your favorite dijon mustard and where do you buy it locally?

We brought back a supply of simple Amora dijon after our last trip to France. Unfortunately that has run out and we have taken to ordering it from Amazon or the Frenchy Bee site for 4X the price. It would still be nice to find a local source.

That is an all time classic. FWIW, I think Sportello is much more accessible than Dink.

Looking for hip place with great food to watch Red Sox this Saturday

BdM is a good spot to wear a suit if that's still part of the plan. Lot's of places to drink and watch the game nearby as well.

Good decision, and I don't think you can go wrong at any of your choices for dinner, all very good. Why not try somewhere you haven't been. How about Hungry Mother for dinner and then Lord Hobo for drinks and the game?

Does 4 stars from the Globe really mean anything? We're not talking the Times here.

At a quick glance, there are places on your list which don't even have a TV. You can use Yelp to narrow it down. IMO you should either pick a fancy night out, or be casual and watch the game. They isn't much of an intersection between the two.

Who makes your favorite cheese fries?

Shake Shack has begun to roll out a new hand cut french fry in place of the frozen crinkle cuts. It is not available in the Chestnut Hill store yet, as it will take some time and $$ to switch over all the existing locations. All new Shake Shack locations will launch with the new fries, including the soon to open Harvard Square location.

Sushi

Cafe Sushi had a much broader selection of fish, some I had never eaten before (and all delicious). The flavors and progression made much more sense than what I have had at Uni, and there wasn't one "miss" in the entire meal. I found the overall knife work and preparation of the fish superior at Cafe Sushi. Our last omakase st Uni was extremely disapointing (http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/8565...). Cafe Sushi was superior in just about every way except for physical atmosphere. In general is was a superior meal at half the price. I'm just comparing the omakase offerings, not the overall establishments.

Sushi

I need to retract and apologize for my above comment “I think some of the best of Boston claims may be over exuberant”. We recently went to Cafe Sushi for a traditional omakase dinner at the sushi bar, and it more than holds its own with anywhere else Boston. At $70 it shames the omakase from a place like Uni which is nearly double the price. The dinner omakase is really on a different level from the Chef’s Special I normally order at lunch. The fish was all impeccable, and the soft spoken chef Seizi is a true master of his craft.

I don’t have pictures of everything as I was too busy eating and kept forgetting to take discrete phone snaps when possible, but some photos are attached. The omakase included everything on the specials menu (photo attached), plus a few other courses peppered in. After an amuse, the first dish was a true standout: local scallops paired with Santa Barbara uni in a dashi broth. What followed was a seemingly endless courses of sashimi and nigiri, interrupted only for a bit of delicious madai bone broth with a fried fish head on the side. We were pleasantly full and thought the meal was over, when the coup de grace came out consisting of a trio of ankimo preparations, including one face melting sous vide piece.

We were honestly a bit overfull when we left, and shaking our heads that this place was right around the corner and we had never done the dinner omakase. It will probably be a monthly occurrence now. We’ll get back before a visit to NYC next month so we can have Cafe Sushi fresh in our minds to compare to our current Manhattan benchmark for traditional omakase (15 East). There was a line out the door when we left on a Friday evening, at least half of whom were Japanese.

I’ll pay better attention to better to the progression of dishes next time.

According to a sign Felipe's Taqueria will be moving into the old Bertucci's space from their current location in The Garage. I haven't been there much lately (frequenting Beantown Taqueria more), however have always found them to be one of the better Taqueria's in the area.

There have definitely been some hits, but I just find the food to inconsistent overall. Great place for beer or though.

Schlesinger back to Cambridge?

Sounded too good to be true; that's too bad. The food (and name) at Lord Hobo could stand to be upgraded.

So what does a pledge of the license mean exactly?

Schlesinger back to Cambridge?

http://bostonrestaurants.blogspot.com...

Now THIS is some worthy and encouraging news! Excerpt below:

"A Licensing Commission General Hearing page on the City of Cambridge website indicates that Daniel Lanigan of Lord Hobo on Hampshire Street has "applied to pledge [the restaurant's all alcoholic beverages] license to Christopher Schlesinger." Known in part for being the founder of the East Coast Grill in Inman Square, Schlesinger also opened such places as the All-Star Sandwich Bar in Inman Square, The Blue Room in Kendall Square, and The Back Eddy in Wesport, though an earlier article in the Boston Business Journal mentions that he has exited all of the dining spots that he created."

Toro or Coppa?

Both are excellent, so whichever menu looks better to you. For a one time visit it would be hard to rate one over the other. I personally prefer Coppa's food more for repeated visits. Toro has a full liquor license, which Coppa does not.

Donuts!

IMO, If you can't maintain a consistently good product, don't take it on the road (or limit the hours so the donuts are still fresh). This would apply to your Union Square analogy as well, based on my experience with their product from a farmers market (post above).

Donuts!

If they were doing a special "pop up", there should have been fresh product on hand. I think you are giving them a pretty generous pass there. How much were the 5 donuts?

Our weekend house guests thoroughly enjoyed the dozen donuts brought in from Linda's this am ($10 for the entire dozen).

December 2013 Openings and Closings

It's too bad as the restaurant has been around in one form or another for quite some time. However, our last two visits (1 brunch & 1 dinner) were really poor in both food and service. Upstairs on the Square never came close to Upstairs at the Pudding in food, service or physical space (now that was a loss I still lament).
