SF hound needs happy hour location for group in Brooklyn
Live in San Francisco and have been charged with planning an event for alumni. I would like a restaurant or bar that has good happy hour type food. I will have a group of 15-25 and would ideally like to have a space that is separate from the rest of the space but does not have to be a private room.
Any suggestions would be welcome as I have nothing to go on and being so far away don't have the luxury of being able to visit different options.
Thank you in advance for your feedback!
30th Birthday Lunch/Dinner Santa Monica, Westwood or Long Beach
I've been gone from the area too long to be able to really help a friend looking for the following:
A restaurant for lunch or dinner for 10-15 people. Cost of $30-40 per person not including private dining room cost (private dining room not required.) Doesn't have to be family friendly but that would be nice. A restaurant where alcohol is not the focus, it can be there but not as the focus. Ambiance is important.
Once of the first places that came to mind was Beechwood Restaurant in Marina Del Rey.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Need Delivered Lunch for 25 in Moraga
I'm organizing a staff meeting for 25 people in Moraga and have a budget of $15 per person for lunch. This is my first event with the company and want to make sure it goes well and great food would not hurt either. I am not opposed to sandwiches + salad type lunch but would like it to be delicious.
I have looked at Rick & Ann's and Hugh Groman's greenleaf delivery but both are too pricey.
Thank you in advance.
Lively restaurants, ok for toddler?
I can't help you with the specific restaurants as I am new to town but coincidentally just read the following article in the SF Chronicle about kids dinning in restaurants in town and how the businesses are adapting to it: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/03/25/FD3EVLC1V.DTL
Sad at Sona
So some friends took me to Sona for my birthday on Saturday. I looked at the menu online and was salivating thinking about all the yummy possibilities...unfortunately the reality was very different.
Let me first start off by talking a little about the service. Hostesses and bartender (only one of them) where very friendly and nice. For me the rest of the wait staff was pretentious, unfriendly and lacking any sense of humor, I actually felt like I was being waited on by the mob. We were sat at our table and offered giant (I would say over 16 inches) awkward breadsticks that tasted alright. Our waiter greeted us with a speech about his sole mission being to ensure that we had the best meal of our lives…that was the last of him we saw that evening. We decided to try the 6 course tasting for $95 and as each course was brought to us a waiter (who kept staring into the distance) would explain our course.
The meal’s only highlight was a roasted black cod which was perfectly seasoned and cooked. Beyond that I felt that the rest of the dishes were overly complex without any reason. To top it off one of the entrees (roasted opa w/ heirloom tomatoes and shrimp) was overcooked…the fish has could have cooked a couple minutes less and the shrimp was rubber. I mentioned this to the waiter who was giving us a lecture on our courses and he looked at me as though I was crazy. Maybe I’m wrong, but in a restaurant of that caliber and with those prices everything should be PERFECLTY cooked including the one lone shrimp on my opa dish.
Overall a disappointing culinary experience definitely not worth your money or time.
Musha Santa Monica - closed for renovation
Just got to the one in Torrance for now...anyway it's way better than the one in Santa Monica.
Culver City...melts?
I have been trying to find a post about a restaurant in Culver with grilled cheese or melt and cannot track it down. Can anyone help?
Thank you in advance.
Bechamel w/ egg
This is out of a Greek cookbook I have and I'm not sure why the egg...I've never made bechamel with it. If I had to guess it would be to add volume to the bechamel (almost like a souffle). In Greece the bechamel is pretty thick but who knows.
Bechamel w/ egg
I have a recipe for a bechamel that calls for a beaten egg to be added after the sauce has thickened. Any ideas if I can make this in advance.
Thank you in advance.
New PINKBERRY in Santa Monica and Brentwood
I used to have nightmares (for real) about Susan Powter!
Lactaid Bechamel...can it be done?
I saw that but I was sceptical so I wanted to see if anyone had actually tried it.
Lactaid Bechamel...can it be done?
Has anyone made bechamel using Lactaid? I am making Moussaka and completely forgot to buy milk but have Lactaid. I'm assuming the quantity of milk and lactaid would be equal.
Thank you in advance.
New PINKBERRY in Santa Monica and Brentwood
Speaking of too much I saw that they are opening one at the Farmer's Market at the Grove.
The owner/chef yelled at me from the kitchen for 5 minutes-I was mortified.
In Greece dolmades with rice (called dolmadakia) and are served at room temperature never cold from the fridge. Dolmades which contain meat (sometimes wrapped in grape leaves or gabbage) are always served warm/hot with an avgolemono lemon egg) sauce ont them.
We Greeks are very very dramatic people...but the owner was COMPLETELY out of line. Not only should he not have yelled at you but he should have taken them of the bill.
If I were you I would create a new post with this restaurant's name so as to warn other hounds in your area to never ever eat there!
New PINKBERRY in Santa Monica and Brentwood
From what I understand the Abbott Kinney location is now open (abbott kinney & california) across from Abbotts Pizza...deadlly combination.
Frozen Artichokes
I love using them to make artichoke soup. Here is a great recipe from FoodTVs Giada: http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_33446,00.html?rsrc=search
My advice on this one is to not make it too early in advance as it seems to thicken up a lot...you can always dilute back down with some broth.
New PINKBERRY in Santa Monica and Brentwood
Very excited about Playa Vista...hate the Marina location too. I also saw one on Abbott Kinney, it looks pretty close to being done.
Drunkin Goat Cheese
Whole Foods definitely carries it and if I'm not mistaken so does Bristol Farms (not 100% sure about that).
Jerne - To go or not to go?
My inlaws are in town and staying at the Ritz in MRD and we were wondering about trying Jerne for diner. Some people have told me that they liked it but reading recent fellow chowhounders reviews it sounds like maybe it's not what it used to be.
Please let me know if it's worth trying if we should just take them to tried and true Joe's on Abbott Kinney.
Thank you in advance.
The Victorian Baker in Santa Monica?
Has anyone tried this place? Is it worth it? Are Sundays crazy because of the Farmer's Market.
ISO child friendly dinner tonight - westside
Cantalini's...I have a 16 month old I have taken there for dinner.
Fast Food Special Orders
Taco Bell bean burrito with green sauce and sour cream...yummy!!!
where can I buy preserved lemons for Pesach dish?
I was at Surfas and they had some (I know cause I was so close to buying some).
Rhubarb at farmer's markets?
I saw some at the Santa Monica Farmer's Market this past weekend so it's out there...not sure if the same stand goes to the Hollywood market or not.
Best Desserts in a Chain
Houston's: Key Lime Pie (only available during key lime season)
Need recipe for non-dairy dessert
I'm definitely interested in the tofu cheesecake and the vegan cupcakes.
Thank you so much for your other suggestions too...I'll dig up my MS April issue also.
Need recipe for non-dairy dessert
Does anyone have any suggestions for a non-dairy dessert that's not simply putting fruit on a plater?
Thank you in advance.
dinner in Torrance after 8 pm?
I second Musha-so many different choices and everything is very tasty. Must try: pork belly, risotto (on the heavy side), lobster roll, shrimp dumplings fried in tofu skin, tofu nuggets.
