Seattle/Tacoma--college dining

My daughter is considering college in Seattle or Tacoma and we will be visiting in a few weeks from the Midwest. Any suggestions for good restaurants near the University of Puget Sound and the University of Washington (Seattle)? I'm not looking for the highest-tier fine-dining type of place, but someplace fun, with personality, ethnic food of almost any kind would be great, that would showcase what's special about this area. Thanks!

St. Paul Breakfast / Brunch Places

I second the rec for Capitol View. Very authentic, neighborhood-y, huge portions, delicious. I think it's a huge step above the other local diners like St. Clair Broiler and Grandview. But the "view" of the Capitol is really from the street, not from inside the restaurant!

Take-out Pies?

Help! I need two pies for Wednesday. Any suggestions as to where to go for super-delicious pies? (One chocolate, one ???) St. Paul would be more convenient but willing to travel!
Thanks!

Fried clams

I grew up in New England and can't eat fried clams anywhere but on the beach. We used to get them in pint- and quart-sized containers, best thing ever. And they used to be cheap.
Plus, I never see clams on menus here. Oysters are another matter, and I have to say, the fried oysters at Sea Salt are great. I've never tried them in any other local venues.

Like the Nicollet Island Inn, but a little cheaper?

We are looking for a nice restaurant for a family dinner this weekend--good food, special but not too fancy atmosphere, maybe somewhere to walk around afterwards. The Nicollet Island Inn would be perfect but I just looked at the menu and it's kind of pricey. Is there anything similar, but a little less expensive?
Thanks!

Davenport/Quad Cities--what's good?

A group of us (fun-loving young to middle aged women) will be spending the weekend in Davenport, Iowa and are looking for some fun places to eat in the area. One vegetarian. Anything with fun history, river views, a lively bar? All recommendations welcome.
Thanks!

Favorite Asian Grocery Store in St. Paul?

I know this has been discussed but it seems there have been a lot of changes, so I thought I'd check--what is the best Asian grocery store in St. Paul? Variety, cleanliness, convenience, etc.
Thanks.

Picata, Veal, STP

I love Carmelo's, but it's on Snelling at the corner of St. Clair, not Grand. The piccata is delicious.

MSP - Arancini?

Carmelo's in St. Paul has them.

Need a Twin Cities Gelato Roundup

And I just noticed there's gelato at the St. Paul Farmers Market (today was opening day). I didn't try any, but it looked delicious. They 6 or 8 flavors, including maple bacon. The other flavors were more traditional.

AUTHENTIC Dim Sum in the Twin Cities

Really? Mai Village may not have the selection available at Jun Bo (although I think Jun Bo has cut back on the range of offerings) but I think what they serve is always delicious and fresh. And they do have a number of pretty unique items--quail egg dumplings, things like that. I haven't tried some of the other places but I'm always really happy at Mai Village.

Breakfast in Rochester, MN?

Any suggestions for Sunday morning??

Duluth--dinner suggestions [Moved from Minneapolis-St. Paul Board]

I'm heading to Duluth this week and couldn't find the old posts on this board for restaurant suggestions there. Any thoughts on somewhere good for dinner? We'll be staying in Canal Park but other locations are OK, too. Maybe not Asian food, and nothing super expensive, but anything else would be good. And I'm traveling with two teenagers. Thanks!

MSP--German food

It's been fun reading all the responses to my original query. And you've given me a lot of new places to try, too.
Danke schoen!

MSP--German food

Two questions:

1) Is German food by definition un-chowish? It seems that one should almost be embarrassed to admit liking it. But I do. Should I keep this information secret when I find myself in epicurean circles?

2) If it is acceptable to like German food, is Glockenspiel in St. Paul a good place? Again, I like it (although it's been a while since I've been there.) It's really cheerful and I think the food is good. I think the atmosphere is much better than Gasthaus Bavarian out in Stillwater. What do people think? Or should I not even be raising this subject?

Lovers of German food, step out of the shadows!

MSP- Best Nachos

The smoked chicken nachos at the San Pedro Cafe in Hudson, WI.

Grand Marais, MN

Angry Trout is the best. Everything they do is local, sustainable, etc., and the food is delicious. If it's nice you can sit outside and if your daughter gets squiry you can just walk her over to the water, or look at the boats. The maple vinaigrette on the salad is amazing, and whatever fresh grilled fish they've got for the day will be delicious. There are non-fish options, too. I've heard other places are good in Grand Marais but that's where we always eat.

MSP- PYO Blueberries

Agreed--Rush River Produce is the best. Amazing berries, and an incredible view from the fields. Also, very kid friendly--I think they even have a swing or something. Definitely worth the drive.

Cheap but Celebratory--Near North

My mother, sister and I will be visiting Chicago in a couple of weeks and are looking for a nice place for a "special" dinner, but not anything too expensive. We already have plans to go to Bistrot Margot another night, before Second City, but that's a general idea of our price point. We'll be staying off Northern Michigan Ave.
Any suggestions? Thanks!

(MSP) W.A. Frost - Unhappiest Hour Ever

Thanks, jfood. No matter how terrible the food or service, there seems to be no reason to lash out at autistic teens, who are just people laboring under a disability over which they have no control. Lashing out a cheese curds is another matter entirely.

Atlanta--southern charm

We'll be traveling to Atlanta next month for a wedding and would love to go to a restaurant that really reflects traditional southern cooking (fried chicken, etc.) and atmosphere but isn't too touristy/goofy. We'll be staying downtown but will have a car. Thanks so much!

MSP--High School grad dinner/St. Paul Hotel but cheaper

My son is graduating high school in June, grandma is coming to town, and we'd like to go out for a nice dinner. The St. Paul Hotel (Grill?) would have been perfect--atmosphere, type of food, location, etc.) but when I looked at the menu it was out of our price range. Anything similar but less pricey? We're looking for an "occasion" restaurant, traditional food, nice location--and a drive would be OK, too. Thanks!

I-35 between MSP and KC?

Thanks for all the suggestions! Looks like we'll find plenty to entertain us on the way there and back.

I-35 between MSP and KC?

We'll be driving from MSP to Kansas City in a few weeks. Are there any fun restaurants along the way? Our plan is to stick to the highway, but we'd make a detour for something good Any type of food is OK. Thanks!.

Fried Clams in March?

I'll be visiting the Boston area in late March and would love to get some fried clams. I don't mind a drive (i.e. to the North Shore, or somewhat south, although not as far as the Cape). Any suggestions?

Dinner in St. Cloud (MN)?

Any suggestions for dinner in St. Cloud, Minnesota? The Walker is putting on a very special dance performance there this weekend, and I'm sure a lot of Twin Cities residents will be making the trip, as I will be.
As always, thanks for the advice.

MN State Fair--open before 7:30 a.m.?

Thanks again to all for the input. Turns out early breakfast at the fair wasn't a problem--booths were pretty much closed, as far as I could tell, but a lot of the dining halls opened at 7:00.

Later in the day, I tried the honey/sunflower ice cream based on the recommendations here and it was great.

Cheese curds to share from the Mouth Trap--delicious but it makes a huge difference to eat them right away. Once they've stated cooling off they get kind of rubbery (still good, though)!

And, right by the Mouth Trap, the best deal on drinks at the fair--a 33oz. Diet coke on ice for just $2. I know soda isn't too chow-y, but nothing beats it on warm sunny day.

Finally, my other favorite is the smoked salmon wrap at Giggles. Loaded with salmon, a delicious raspberry chipotle sauce, everything tastes fresh.

Thanks again and happy fair-going.

MN State Fair--open before 7:30 a.m.?

Thanks for the input--I'll report back if I find anything amazing!

MN State Fair--open before 7:30 a.m.?

I have to arrive at the fair early for a volunteer shift at one of the booths. Are there any coffee/breakfast options that will be open before 7:30? So far all I could find out on the web site is that the Food Building opens at 8:00.
I've loved reading all your suggestions for what to eat at the fair!

Thanks!

Dinner Before the Blue Man Group?

We like pretty much anything--there's one vegetarian in the group, but that's the only limitation.
