Good food/chocolate/treats/snacks to bring on a plane for friend in another province?
CocoaNymph on West 10th (near Alma) is great too for wonderful bespoke chocolates.
Good food/chocolate/treats/snacks to bring on a plane for friend in another province?
Check out Edible Canada on Granville Island for lots of local specialties.
Non-restaurant eats in Victoria (to take back to Vancouver)?
The Japanese Sour Cherry green tea from Silk Road is very unusual and lovely.
I would also recommend the Cinnamon Dip Bagels from Mount Royal Bagel Company (1115 North Park - near Pandora and Cook St). They're amazing fresh from the bakery.
Cheapest, High Quality Organic Coffee Beans
It's not the best coffee you can buy but for the price I really like the Kicking Horse coffee (the Kick Ass in particular) which can usually be found on sale for 10.99/lb at London Drugs, IGA, Saveon Foods or Choices (one of these places usually has it on sale each week)
Be aware of package sizing on some brands as they are often less than a pound per bag.
Parents are coming to town! where should we go!?
I would highly recommend Enigma up on West 10th. The food is wonderful and the atmosphere is quite relaxed.
Vancouver Restaurant Help (w/ baby)
Why don't you post a list of places you're considering and we can let you know how baby friendly they are?
what do you buy at Whole Foods?
Thanks for the info. Daiya is actually quite prevalent but I have yet to find another source for the Amande almond-milk "yogurt". It's a relatively new item at WF so I'm hoping some other stores will start carrying it soon.
what do you buy at Whole Foods?
Dairy-free items that are hard to find elsewhere: Daiya "cheese", Amande almond-milk yogurt (anyone have another source for this in Vancouver?)
Cinnamon Mount Royal Bagels
Ginger-rice muffins and Vegan Chocolate Mousse cake from the in-house bakery
non-Chinese garlic and ginger
whatever organic fruit and veg, preferrably local, is on sale this week
Italian-style turkey sausages (with fennel; these are much better than the pork ones they also make)
diapers (I know it's not food-related but it's one of the main items I go to Whole Foods for)
best places for Easter brunch buffet
Sorry I didn't see this one in time but for future reference I've always had a good experience at the buffet at Heron's in the Fairmont Waterfront Hotel and they have a ton of seafood.
Too late for good hot cross buns this year but maybe next?
I like the Cobs ones too and they still had them for sale today.
Florida Hound Looking for Dinner for 8 in Downtown Vancouver
Maybe try Cardero's, Fish House in Stanley Park or Yew at the Four Seasons (although the price point might be a bit higher)?
Where to buy empty really expensive wine bottles on Van.Is.
Maybe ask a really nice restaurant for a few empties? or a wine shop?
group meeting space for lunch about 30 people in East Van, any suggestions
Again, too late for today but what about Dario's at the Italian Cultural Centre?
Friday afternoon drinks on a patio - Vancouver
I just wanted to report that we just had a surprisingly excellent meal at Monk McQueens on Saturday evening. In the past I've been less than impressed by the food but we still go because of the wonderful view. However, on Saturday our food was wonderful and the service was impeccable (they asked if I wanted oil and vinegar instead of butter with the bread after I mentioned a dairy allergy; my husband dropped his napkin at one point without noticing and only realized when a new one appeared by his side, etc).
It's back on the list, especially as the sunny days grow more frequent.
Dekopons -hot new citrus- do we have them yet?
They had them at the one on West 4th the other day.
Tea Shops West End?
It's not quite in the West End but the Urban Tea Merchant on Alberni/Georgia is the only one I can think of in the downtown area.
The Fish House also does nice tea but it's a sit down experience.
Nuba - New location to open 3100 block West Broadway
Just walked by the other day and noticed the signs. No firm opening date yet.
Best all you can eat sushi in Vancouver Area
I don't go for AYCE very often but when my brother comes to town he loves it. We've had a good experience at Kaneda at the corner of Hemlock and Broadway (above the Macs- used to be Fish on Rice). I also used to enjoy Tanpopo on Denman but haven't been in years so can't speak to the quality today.
Steveston March 14/12 - seeking recommendations for seafood lunch - fish & chips, oysters, chowder for elderly guests -
My in-laws (late 60s) love Tapenade.
Just a note about the National Historic Site at the Steveston Cannery, plan to dress warmly. The main part of the site/museum is unheated and was very cold and damp when we were there this past week. The giftshop area is heated and the little "theatre" sitting area but the bulk of the site is not.
South Granville Eating
Has anyone tried Luke's Corner Bar & Kitchen (in the old Red Door spot on Granville @ West 14th)?
ISO tea sock
I have one but can't for the life of me remember where I bought it.
Try:
Teaz on Granville (they used to carry these when they were still Herbal Republic on Broadway)
Murchies (I've seen them there but it was awhile ago)
Pekoe (on Broadway @ Laurel)
Ming Wo
Anyone try Superior Touch 'Better Than Bouillon'? [moved from B.C.]
Just a note, most of these bouillons have milk added so be careful if you're cooking for someone with allergies. THis is true of many "chicken broth" brands.
For some weird reason, the turkey and vegetable ones don't include whey but the beef, mushroom and chicken ones does.
Searching for a bakery with authentic German rye bread (with caraway) in Vancouver
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Looking for Dining Recommendation in Kitsilano
Reporting back. We had a nice meal at Cafe Regalade. The service was attentive and friendly. Despite being full, they sat us at 4-top which was much appreciated with the little one in tow. The room did get awfully warm as the night went on though so dress accordingly.
We had the rillettes and french onion soup to start, both delicious and a nice portion size. I had the duck confit with salad which was enormous: two big legs of duck served on a potato gallette which was unexpected and a side of frisee salad. Unfortunately the execution was a bit hit and miss. The duck was very tasty but a tad salty (and I love salty things), the gallette was yummy and crispy but swimming in oil which was a bit off-putting. The frisee was overpowered by the garlic in the dressing. My SO had the rabbit in creamy mushroom sauce and had nothing but good things to say.
All in all, it was a good experience, nice ambience and I would go back again.
Best high tea experience for Mother/Daughter in Vancouver
Has anyone tried the High Tea at the Fish House in Stanley Park?
I've always been impressed by how kid-friendly they are and the location is lovely.
Looking for Dining Recommendation in Kitsilano
Thanks for all the suggestions. My mind needed a jolt/reminder of some of the places we've been wanting to try. We're doing to check out Cafe Regalade this time around as we've been meaning to go since they opened. Will report back on our experience.
I love Baru but agree that it's too loud for our little one. How is the volume at Flying Tiger?
Looking for Dining Recommendation in Kitsilano
Looking for a nice dinner out in the Kitsilano area. La Quercia is already booked for another day.
Open to any type of food and budget but we will be dining with our 3 month old so nothing too fancy or too loud would be appreciated. Also, my SO would like to go for drinks afterwards somewhere walking distance from whereever we eat. Any suggestions?
We'd also be open to the Main St area but were hoping not to have to drive.
