Arizona/So-Cal style flour tortilla in SF

I certainly won't massacre you for saying that, and the tortillas are nice and fatty at Chevy's. Unfortunately, they're also too fat (ie thick) to really be what I'm looking for.

The search continues...

Arizona/So-Cal style flour tortilla in SF

Thanks for that suggestion. I have actually had those before, and they definitely are approaching the translucent fattiness I am looking for. I have also tried making my own, and they turn out pretty well compared to the bagged ones from the bodega across the street. Unfortunately, they are both missing the dusty part (and really just don't compare to the tortillas from El Bravo in Phoenix...but I suppose I can just load up when I go home).

Arizona/So-Cal style flour tortilla in SF

I grew up in Phoenix, and all of the flour tortillas there are translucent and dusty and fatty and delicious. I miss them! And all I can find here is the opaque shiny type of tortilla, in both shops and restaurants. Anyone know something I don't? I live in the Mission, so I figure they must be here if they're anywhere.

How many times a day...?

weekdays: oatmeal with raisins around 9 am at work, occasionally a snack of cheese and crackers or fruit mid-morning, lunch of leftovers at my desk anytime between 11 and 2, snack of plain yogurt and raisins or crackers mid-afternoon, snack of popcorn or cheese and crackers (i like cheese and crackers, you see) at home around 6, dinner around 8, usually rice or pasta based with a glass of wine. on rare occasion, will have a cookie or a few spoonfuls of salted caramel (thank you, bi-rite) ice cream after dinner. i don't love sweets.

weekends: decaf coffee with milk and sugar whenever i wake up. eggs of some sort an hour or so afterwards. snack (popcorn, fruit, or chips) in the early afternoon or lunch depending on when i woke up. dinner out or take away, usually around 7/8.

i eat when hungry, out of necessity. i get very cranky, nauseous, and tired if i don't eat as soon as i am hungry. however, the food choices are usually purely for pleasure, although i like to use up the contents of my csa box for health reasons. hopefully those vegetable experiments turn out pleasurable as well.

Night out in Santa Barbara

Thanks Alice and Shortsord. Yelp and Google have also pointed me in the direction of Hungry Cat and Milk and Honey, so we'll probably try one of those.

Night out in Santa Barbara

A group of friends (all female) and I are meeting up in Santa Barbara over Labor Day weekend. We're coming from SF and LA and don't know the area very well. We are looking for a place to eat on Saturday night with well-crafted drinks and good food to share (preferably small plates). Any suggestions? We'd like someplace downtown so that we can walk around after dinner.

Thanks in advance.

Lettered rock candy

I am looking for a candy shop in the Bay Area that does lettered rock candy (seaside rock candy from England that has messages all the way through). Preferably they would do personalized messages. I've found a place in Florida that will ship this, but I'm looking for something a little closer to home.

Anyone know of a sweet shop around here who makes rock?

What is your favorite home baked cookie recipe?

I love the Nestle Tollhouse recipe, minus the nuts, add a 1/2 cup or so of rolled oats. Fantastic with butterscotch chips subbed for the chocolate ones. The oats keep the cookie from spreading out too much in the oven and add nice texture.

The Vanishing Oatmeal Raisin recipe from under the Quaker's Oatmeal lid is also good. Golden raisins are infinitely better for these cookies than regular, IMO.

Sinew and grinding meat: method or madness?

I had major issues with tissues getting caught in the Kitchenaid meat grinder. Stopping to pull silverskin (thank you, hohokam, for the new word) out of the plate was too frustrating for me, so I returned the attachment (thank you, Macy's). Now I use my food processor to grind meat - it doesn't look like ground meat out of a grinder, but tastes great.

Looking for Best Mission Burrito in SF.

Frjtz isn't closed.

They were remodeling the Hayes location while opening the Valencia one. Now both are open, I think.

where in the heck can you get a good sandwich in sf?

I'm not sure - I've only had the chicken milanesa and the aforementioned cold turkey. Next time I walk by I'll take a look at the menu.

Perhaps traditional wasn't exactly the right word to describe their torta fillings. And, now that I'm looking back at my previous post, I think it's huaraches that they have on the menu, not sopes.

where in the heck can you get a good sandwich in sf?

Mr. Pickle's on Van Ness and 20th puts pesto on everything, if you're into that. They have fairly straightforward sandwiches, along with a heart attack called The Bear: BBQ beef with cheddar cheese. I think they put pesto on that, too, unless you tell them otherwise. I've enjoyed their plain turkey and swiss, mostly (with pesto:-)).

Tortas El Primo on 22nd between Mission and Bartlett is great for sopes and traditional tortas, but they also do a very tasty cold sliced turkey. The bread is sweet and delicious and the sandwich includes avocado. You'll probably want to have them leave the jalapenos off if you want it to taste more deli-like.

SF - Yes Virginia, there IS a Cuban sandwich truck

Just walked by the "Goza Goza Taco" truck on the NE corner of 11th and Mission.

Sadly, they didn't have mango licuados as advertised on the side of the truck, but they did have Cuban sandwiches.

The sandwich is filled with fairly thick slices of roasted pork, which is a little on the dry side, but the pickles, ham and melty Swiss cheese contributes the needed moisture. The bread is a squishy roll, toasted flat, and the pork has great flavor, despite the aforementioned dryness. It's really hitting the spot and an improvement over the last Cuban sandwich I had at Bodeguito del Medio in Puerto Vallarta (big bread and unwanted lettuce, if I remember correctly).

Lunches - 3rd & Market

Yes, I have my streets and locations wrong. I haven't been there in a few months. And as noted, the other location is closer to the OP anyway. Sorry for the confusion.

Lunches - 3rd & Market

Sellers Market at 595 Market (the entrance is at Kearny and Sutter) has fresh, reasonably fast lunches. It seems like they think of themselves as the farmers' market of lunch restaurants (products go straight from the producers to them to you); the food is local and/or sustainably raised. The sandwiches (particularly the oven toasted ones) are very tasty and come with small side salads. They aren't dirt cheap, more in the $7 range if I remember correctly.

Sonoma - Girl and the Fig - anybody been?

I've only been for lunch and brunch and a drink at the bar (three separate times). The quiche lorraine is good (from what I can remember) with tasty fries. They have nice cheeses. I had a bit of a bread and cheese overload when I was there for lunch - had a cheese plate and a ham and cheese sandwich. Delicious table butter, on a side note.

The atmosphere is comfortable, like an old house, and it's right off Sonoma Square. I remember being happy with whatever wine it was that we ordered, too. The bar is a pleasant place to sit after dinner (from here or somewhere else) - dim lighting, not too loud.

Sorry the above is a bit vague.

What happened to the burritos at Cancun? (@ 19th)

The last time I ordered a super veggie burrito at Taqueria Cancun (the one at 19th and Mission) I was sorely disappointed. The tortilla was dry and flavorless, there were very few beans, and the avocado was nearly non-existent (abundant avocados being one of my primary attractions to Cancun). This was about two months ago.

My friend had a similar experience last week. Searching the board, it seems that Cancun's quality has been debated somewhat, but last year I was getting consistently satisfying burritos there - fresh tortillas, lots of avocados, even melted cheese inside the burritos.

Should I just not bother anymore?

New Dottie's in SF?

Thanks. That's sad news, though.

New Dottie's in SF?

A search on here and various other sites shows some discussion in 2006 about a Dottie's opening up on Fell and Gough. The Chronicle reported that the Dottie's True Blue owner said they would be opening their new outpost late 2006. Anyone know if this ever happened?

Thanks for any leads.

Visiting SF 10/27 - 10/30

Another one nearby that I forgot - Dottie's True Blue cafe. Fantastic breakfasts. Great scrambles and fresh baked coffee cake. Watch out - there will be a line!

You will be near Cortez (which is in Hotel Adagio), which is always good for a fun night out, IMO. And, they just got a Michelin star!

Have an El Diablo if you're in the mood for an aperitif. Who knows what's on the menu, because it changes a lot, but I had a great squid and sweetbreads appetizer last time I was there. Also some amazing aged New York strip.
