Moving to Nairobi from US - foodstuffs to take?

Hello.
My family is relocating to Nairobi for a few years and as I begin to think about packing I'm wondering if there are foodstuffs I should be taking along. We don't eat too much processed food, Oreos, etc. and won't miss that too much, but I am wondering about American staples - brown sugar, maple syrup, graham crackers, etc.
I fully intend to embrace the local grocery, but sometimes there are things you really wish you had... The bags of chocolate chips (and resulting Toll House cookies) we had as students in Italy were like gold!
Thanks in advance for any input!

Ha! Shows you what I know! Precisely why I posted this!
Bourbon it is. Thanks again. We may be moving there. If that's the case I'll be asking people to bring bourbon to me, a Southerner.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! They are most appreciated. The meeting is with a man who owns a large company and he travels to Europe, etc. for business so I think something uniquely American or something fresh that doesn't often make it to East Africa is the ticket.
Anyone think a box of fancy boutique chocolates is a bad idea? Too girly?

Hi.
My husband will be traveling from New York next week for an important meeting in Nairobi and he would like to bring the exec he's meeting a luxury food/drink-type gift. We know he drinks and are considering some great wine, but I'm also looking for out-of-the-box suggestions.
I have no idea what you can/can't get there...
Any suggestions welcome.
thanks!

Super delicious mail order ice cream that's not $12 a pint?

I would like to send a nice thank you gift to my OB and I'm sure she receives things all the time! My first thought was Jeni's Ice Cream - so delicious and not your usual flowers or chocolates. I haven't ordered in a while and was shocked to see that it's now $12 a pint BEFORE shipping. Yikes! (though I do think it's ALMOST worth it)
Any other amazing ice cream places that ship by mail? Not in love with Graeter's...

thanks!

Sunday PM food/grocery in 1eme (or 3eme) for couple traveling with baby

My husband and I will be arriving in Paris this Sunday afternoon on the Eurostar from London and are staying for 4 nights in an apartment near Les Halles, just off the Blvd. de Sebastopol and close to the Ile de la Cite.
We are planning to have a big lunch and then hope to eat in for dinner, when baby is in bed. I have researched some casual nearby restaurants open on Sundays in case our plans change, but would love to purchase some prepared dinner foods or pate, cheese, wine, etc. for our meal that evening and also stock up on some very basic groceries. I could bring food from London, but that seems like (bad) coals to Newcastle...
Would also like to know if there is a favorite patisserie nearby.
Any suggestions are most appreciated!

Tikka Masala for vegetarian dinner?

Hello.
I was planning on making chicken tikka masala for a dinner with friends on Friday. Just found out that one friend is now vegetarian. I think I might make the tikka masala with chickpeas and onions instead of chicken. Has anyone tried this before? Does is sound promising?
Any input is welcome. thanks

New Bakery at Union St. and 4th Ave?

I was chatting today with one of the men working on the corner of Union St. and 4th Ave. (by Maria's, used to be a pet store)and he told me that it's going to be an old-style Brooklyn bakery... Anyone have details on this?

What to eat with cottage cheese?

When I was a kid I used to eat it mixed with chopped carrot and green pepper... and LOTS of fresh black pepper... haven't thought about that in years!

Bar Minnow

I live in Park Slope and went to Minnow a while ago - just after they opened the bar section of the restaurant. I had lived in the Slope for a while and had been meaning to try Minnow... boy, were we unimpressed. Just OK food, bad service. We haven't been back. Hope you have a better experience.
