I'm interested to see the responses on breakfast; my girlfriend loves breakfast, and I've yet to find a place in Roanoke that really stands out.

Tudor's is ok, but it's mainly a breakfast-biscuit place. Honestly I haven't been that impressed when I've gone there.

I haven't tried Thelma's signature dish, but when I tried one of their regular breakfast platters I was sort of underwhelmed. It was just basic and uninspired, and didn't even benefit from large quantities.

A little bit further down rt.151 you'll also find the Wild Wolf and Devil's Backbone brewpubs. The food at Wild Wolf is excellent, and their deep-fried oreos w/ ice cream are to die for! Devil's Backbone probably has the best beer of all of them; only problem is that it can get a little busy on weekends.

A couple of the wineries up near Barboursville are worth checking out. Barboursville Vineyards is very good with a large tasting selection and tours of the historic ruins on site. Horton is little more laid-back, but also has a ton of wines to try.

OTOH for sheer number of places to go, you can't beat Afton. Multiple wineries and brew-pubs, and at least one cidery to try. For wine we're partial to Pollak and Afton Mountain Vineyards.

Close to town, our favorite is Jefferson Vineyards. Really nice Petit Verdot, among other things.

For hard cider, your best bet is to visit the cideries for a tasting. Albemarle Ciderworks is excellent, and Bold Rock Cidery in Nellysford is very good too. If you can't make it out there, I think the Whole Foods in C'ville carries one or both of them. (BTW some of the local wineries are excellent as well.)

The only problem with the C&O is that it has stairs everywhere.

If you don't mind walking, the restaurants on the downtown mall are pretty good. Many of them have outdoor dining, which can help manage the noise level.
