Fresh roasted coffee beans in West Hollywood area?

Have you dealt with them for a long time? The roaster club looks like a pretty interesting deal.

Have you gone to Penzey's, so that you can compare the two stores and recommend one over the other?

NY&C/NY-Chgo Pizzeria OPEN?

I miss Chicago pizza. Used to live there, so when I saw this place was open, I was hoping, hoping, hoping, that they would be at least in the ballpark. Not even close. One of the worst pizzas I've had in years. Nothing about this pizza was any good- - -not the tasteless and somewhat tough crust, not the characterless sauce (that slid off the pizza in the take-home box, into a pile on one side of the box), not the cheese and not the toppings.

Oh well. (sigh)

Shun Ken Onion 3-Piece Knife Set - $199

Thanks! I found the sign-up and will get the emails now. I see that buy.com has a $199 deal on a 3-piece Shun set, but they are esoteric sizes and uses - - -that's likely why they are on sale.

Shun Ken Onion 3-Piece Knife Set - $199

I missed this offer too. Went to Amazon's site and there was no deal. It must have been pulled earlier in the day. How did you find out about it? Is there some site's email list that you are on to get notice of these great deals?

Alaskan King Crab

Anyone have problems with salty legs? No, this is a food question, so get your mind out of. . . oh well. I've been buying the crab legs from Ralph's and Von's, and find that some of them are incredibly salty, from when they are cooked at the source. One of the time I bought them, the crab was in two-pound bags, and the label said the crabs were caught wild in Russia and packaged in China, and had a huge sodium amount listed in the nutrition info- - -my guests complained that the crab was so salty they could hardly eat it. Sometimes the ones I buy in bulk from the fish counter have little salt.

Cheese query/gift: aged white cheddar in black wax?

Another thought. . . . there are some other dairies in Wisconsin that make fantastic cheddar. Not sure which of them have black wax packed white cheddar, but they are great cheeses!! You could check with Carr Valley (www.carrvalleycheese.com), or Google "American Cheese Society Competition" and then Google some of the Wisconsin winners.

Cheese query/gift: aged white cheddar in black wax?

Ask her if there was a label on the top of the wax block. That would, of course, direct you to which dairy in Wisconsin made the cheese. Wisconsin Dairy State Cheese Company in Rudolph, Wisconsin (about 13 miles outside of Stevens Point) makes a very good aged sharp cheddar and packs it in black wax for longer-term storage. Other dairies may also do a black-wax pack. Some of the Wisconsin dairies merely repack and distribute cheese made elsewhere in the state, but this dairy makes their own. The white and yellow cheddar are the same, but the white does not have the color added. Here's the address and phone number for the dairy. They ship, but I always get my cheese when I go back home to Wisconsin. They make great cheese curds, by the way. I don't think they have a website, but they will mail a full color brochure and order form.

Looking for a sipping tequila

A tequila fan recommended that I try Tonala's four-year anejo. It is really very good and BevMo had it for $39. Was far better than a lot of people's "go to" premium tequilas, like Patron.

Penzey's Has Arrived In Santa Monica

No more driving to their store in the South Bay - - Penzey's opened their Santa Monica location on Friday. It's at 1347 4th Street in Santa Monica. Monday through Saturday from 10 to 6, and Sunday 11 to 5. For those of you who have not tried their spices, go! You'll never again buy the little red can.

Where is the Best Rye Bread in town?

Diamond makes the corn rye that is sold at Trader Joe's. I was at Diamond to get a few loaves and they had none on the shelf, so they took out a couple of the loaves that were bagged for TJ's.

Great Croissant at Amandine

Have you compared theirs to the croissants at Boule? I sent a friend to Amandine because I think their croissants are fantastic. He agreed, but said Boule's are better.

Exactly my reaction!!! I had enjoyed their food in the past, and went recently with high expectations. The food was far less flavorful and way too salty. I won't be back.

Cheap Spices in West LA/SM/Venice?

Inexpensive does not necessarily mean good. The best spices are going to come from somewhere like Penzey's (storefront in Torrance, but available by mail order). Amazingly good and fresh spices, and I think quite reasonable, but it depends on what you consider to be inexpensive. Or, for bulk, try the Santa Monica Co-op at 1525 Broadway.

Anyone Seen Sour Oranges Lately?

Gonna try to make a mojo, but need to find some sour oranges. There is a thread from February where someone was looking for them. Anyone seen any lately, or have any current suggestions about where to look? Just tried Super King and they had neither the fresh nor the bottled.

Taste of Santa Monica - - Go or No Go?

I see that the annual Taste of Santa Monica is going to be held on September 14 from noon to 4 p.m. on the pier. Forty bucks for all you can eat, and an additional 15 dollars for the wine tent. Has anyone gone before and is it worth it (both money-wise and fun-wise)? Someone posted a question last year about the event, but there were no replies.

If nothing else, it is a beautiful setting to spend the afternoon on the pier, eating food and drinking wine!!

supermarket olives

Don't know what part of the country you are in, but if you find Graber's Olives, try them! They are from Ontario, California (and sell from their website too). Also, Santa Barbara Olive Company distributes their olives to some supermarkets. Don't know how widely.

Fresh milk at an LA area farmers market??

The raw milk at the Hollywood market is sold by Organic Pastures (www.organicpastures.com). They distribute their milk to Whole Foods and maybe other stores in L.A. Call the company directly and find out where they distribute and, most importantly, when they distribute. You'll want to buy the milk right after the new delivery, to make sure it is at its freshest. It's a bit more expensive than buying it at the booth at the market, but time/travel/gasoline factor in.

You can get Horlick's great malted milk powder at the British shops in Santa Monica, but it is more expensive than Carnation. Anyone have any experience comparing the flavors of the two? Does Carnation come close?
