Indian Restaurant suggestions (menu ordering - not buffet) - YEG

I am looking for recommendations for Indian restaurants with menu ordering in mind. It seems the Indian buffet, once the domain of lunches only, is now the primary focus at dinner too for most restaurants. While I enjoy these, and have tried many, I have not eaten off of the menu often enough in the last few years so am looking for recommendations, especially if the place has a good dhansak or roghan josh curry or a good thali plate. Thank!

Edmonton 1st Izakaya Opening soon.... :)

Looking forward to it too. The only Izakaya experience I have had is two of the Guu in YVR and one of the ones in Toronto. Great food, hopefully Tomo will be similar.

Bistro La Persaud

Over the past year I have been to La Persaud 5 or 6 times. As this place is in our neighbourhood, we were pretty excited when it opened and we thought it was one of the best values in the city, with great food at pretty good prices.

I was also there last week, and what a disappointment. I 100% agree with the OP. The new menu is over priced, the food is not as good as the old menu, and the service we had, especially at the new price level, was disappointing.

It is too bad as we had great meals there previously, but we won't be going back. I even called up friends that I had previously recommended the place to, to not bother going if they hadn't been yet as it was not worth it.

A shame that this happened as it was a great place before.

Five days in Edmonton!!!

Three Boars is great and I definitely recommend it, but there are a dozen "Three Boars" in Toronto and I don't think you will really find anything unique there that you couldn't find at Black Hoof or its many progenies. While there are some decent restaurants you can visit, for the most part, the Toronto restaurants you are used to will be better (and better value) than what is here. I would say that one thing a bit unique to Edmonton is the Ukrainian influence, so might recommend Highlands Kitchen, which does food quite well with a Ukrainian twist to some dishes, although it is on the other side of town from where you will be staying. Out towards West Ed, you will find a lot of chain dining, upscale casual etc (think Earls, Joey, Cactus Club, etc) so you might have to venture a bit out of the area where you will be staying.

"Chinese" Restaurants in Yeg without dual menus

I think Good Buddy South has combined their menus now. There used to be a separate English menu of their Chinese food, but I think it is now combined with their Canadian-Chinese menu with their Chinese. I am trying to remember from the last time I was there.

The first time I went there I was handed the Canadian menu, but luckily I had seen the English Chinese menu online so knew it existed and was able to get it. Unlike many restaurants that don't have an English version of their Chinese menu.

I'm glad this thread got started as I will have to check out some of the suggestions here. At some restaurants I've come close a few times to just telling the waitress to bring me the exact same meal that the Chinese family at the nest table over has ordered.

Where to buy kecap (ketjap) manis in Edmonton?

I'm not sure if there is one in Edmonton, but I have had luck in other cities finding it in Dutch stores (the Dutch like it, dating back to the colonial days)

I lived in Banff and still kind of do

I haven't had the poutine at Barpa Bills, but La Belle Patate in Canmore is just about the only poutine I have had west of the Great Lakes that comes close to what I grew up with in Montreal. They serve all-dressed steamies and Mae West as well.

Edmonton: Best Indian Buffet

Agree with this review. It is a bit more expensive, but worth it. Quality seems a bit higher than typical of buffet, and the food is also just a bit different from the typical Indian buffet (maybe the Durban influence) which makes it interesting.

Where Can I Get Good Samosas In Edmonton?

I know that it is not in the location you want, but I am partial to the ones from the little food counter that's inside Millwoods Grocery on 34 Ave. (In the same parking lot as Maurya Palace).

Edit: Wow just realized that this is a thread from 2007 originally. Anyway, added my 2 cents.

looking for andouille sausage and okra in Edmonton

I am pretty sure that Superstore used to have a President's Choice branded Andouille. You might want to check there.

Best Pho in Edmonton?

Was at King's Noodles today. Broth was lacking. It was good but not it's usual greatness. Hope this was just a bad day. It's my favourite in Edmonton, but haven't found anything here yet to watch my favourite places in Toronto.

Bulk Barn in Edmonton

Wonderflosity, they have some of that, but not all. There is a tea store in Southgate (Tea Desire), that I think has a lot of that (loose tisane herbs). Don't know what the prices are like.

Bulk Barn in Edmonton

Made it to Bulk Barn today on their opening day. Very busy around 6 pm. Don't know if it was word of mouth, the Edmonton Journal article today, or all the Eastern transplants itching for some good bulk products. The store seemed a little bit smaller than those I am used to in Ontario and the Maritimes, but the selection all seemed to be there so maybe I am mistaken. Anyway, it is great that it is finally open.

Cleopatra999, they did have a selection of organic products in bulk, more than they used to.

Bulk Barn in Edmonton

It looks like it is really coming! I did a search and a bunch of job postings came up for the Bulk Barn (at the 2077 98 Street NW location that cleopatra999 posted). Do a search for Bulk Barn on jobbank.gc.ca

The job postings are for a Nov 16 start, so hopefully it opens soon

Can't wait!

Hopefully with the Lethbridge store and with the on-ice ads it is part of a Westward expansion

Bulk Barn in Edmonton

In Ontario, they tend to carry packaged Organics, but not as much in bulk. That could be changing though with increased demand. Thanks for the address. I can't find any other reference to it so maybe that is where they are going to open up.

Bulk Barn in Edmonton

Does anyone know if the Bulk Barn is coming to Edmonton? I was watching the hockey game last night and Bulk Barn had a big on-ice logo at Rexall Place. I know they have come to Lethbridge. Hopefully more Alberta stores are on their way. I have missed it ever since moving from Ontario.

@Bob Mac:
Thanks for the heads up. I will check it out.

Cameron's Meats closed

With Brothers and now Camerons closed, does anyone have recommendations for a good place in Edmonton for meat?
