Looking for corn beef and cabbage for St. Patrick's day

Thanks. Raucously chill- that is a wonderful way to describe the Druid. Maybe we'll go be pre-noon and see what it looks like. For an out of town friend who has never been to Boston, I feel like it would be a really awesome experience!

How likely is one to actually get a seat for lunch at any of these places? I was thinking of taking a visiting friend to the Druid on St. Patty's, but it seems risky.

Dim sum birthday party?

Thanks, that's helpful. I am going to try it for dinner on Monday, so I can see if it will be it will be a good idea for the party and if I can talk to her while I am there.

Dim sum birthday party?

This is a good idea-- I will stop by on a Tuesday at around the time we would go and see what it looks like. I like the idea of being able to avoid the hecticness of a Sunday.

Thanks for the "with greens" rec- assuming I can get it in the evenings-- other must haves?

Dim sum birthday party?

Thanks for that-- we called Winsor today to ask, and before we could even say how many people we would be or that it was a party, they said that they don't take reservations and hung up... I guess we could try again? Maybe if I go in person?

Dim sum birthday party?

Hi wonderful hounds,

I want to get some friends together for my birthday, and I thought dim sum would be really fun, but I need your advice to make the best possible plan. In case it affects your advice, I would imagine the group could be anywhere from 8-20 people, depending on how much my friends actually like me. :)

My birthday falls on a Tuesday, so my first thought after reading this board was to have dinner at Winsor. However, I am worried our group will be too large (because Winsor doesn't take reservations and is quite small), and as far as I know there aren't a lot of back up weekday evening dim sum options if we get there and it's crowded. Do you think Winsor will have room for say, 10-12 on a random Tuesday at 6:30 or 7? Is there a back up place we could go either dim sum or something else authentic and delicious around Chinatown?

My second thought is to make a reservation at Hei La Moon for the previous Sunday around lunch time. I figure that way, we won't wait despite being in prime dim sum time (I am assuming Winsor would not be able to seat us then) and I won't have to worry about having a larger group. Would this be a good alternative?

I have never actually had dim sum in Boston's Chinatown, though I have had it elsewhere (Gitlo's, other cities). Is the food substantially different between the two places I mentioned? Another plan/place I should not overlook?

Thanks so much!
Rebecca

Best shellfish tower?

Hi all,

I would love advice on where to get the best huge, fresh, delicious shellfish tower for an anniversary dinner. We love Neptune but think the atmosphere would not be the greatest for the anniversary since we can't make a reservation and it's a bit cramped. We just moved back to town and haven't made it to ICOB yet- would this be a good place to go? Other ideas?

Thanks!

Nicest room and best service for birthday dinner?

Hi everyone,

My grandmother is turning 90 and has just gone through a crazy year, and my mom is in the process of planning her a special birthday dinner out with the family (she is very spry for 90!). We are having a tough time thinking of the right place and I thought Chowhound would be a great place to turn!

Here's the slight twist- my grandma has a lot of food allergies (including shellfish, cinnamon, berries, etc.), and while she enjoys delicious food, we're thinking maybe food ought only be the second most important criterion (my mom and I are both big foodies, so we normally do care about that!)- what we are really looking for is a great looking room and great service that will make my grandma feel really special on her birthday. Great food on top of that is an added plus, and we certainly don't want to go to a place with bad food, but the food doesn't have to be the best of your life.

A bit more info: She is a pretty hip lady, as in, really un-stuffy. Almost any type of cuisine works as long as she can find something that she can eat- she is very adventurous except for the foods she is allergic to. Price is not really an issue, as this is a very special occasion. We are probably looking right around the city, but would be open to places in the suburbs if it is really the right place.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions, Hounds!!!!

Birthday dinner - Tangierino, Grotto or Navy Yard Bistro?

We went to Tangierino for my partner's birthday last year and it was completely delightful. The food was really very good- some inventive, some classic French or Moroccan, but all very tasty. What really makes Tangierino amazing is the romantic, ornate decor/atmosphere- perfect for a birthday. I like Grotto, but it's not nearly as cool inside, and I have not been to Navy Yard- but I really think Tangierino is special.

Best places in Super 88 food court?

Wow, I feel dumb (and I even did a search)- but many thanks- that thread is exactly what I was looking for.

Best places in Super 88 food court?

Hi all,

On Wednesday, I am seeing a show at the Paradise, and I thought it would be fun to go to the Super 88 Food Court for dinner beforehand. I haven't lived in the area or eaten there for a while, so I was hoping some lovely chowhounds could help me out. What are your favorite stalls in the food court? Any we should avoid? Alternatively, is there anywhere cheap and chowish within a few blocks of the Paradise you would recommend instead? (It's at 965 Comm Ave).

Thanks so much!

Mid-afternoon bite in Harvard Square?

If you like Casablanca, check out Algiers, upstairs from Casablanca. They have light meals that I think are delicious, and you can linger as long as you want (notice all the Harvard profs doing work at the tables around you). Have fun!

Guru the Caterer for dinner?

Thanks, all- you're wonderful. Sad to hear there was a death.

We will just have to try it another time, maybe on a weeknight.

Guru the Caterer for dinner?

Hi, I saw an earlier post that Guru the Caterer in Somerville was experimenting with dinner (back in June) but I was wondering if anyone had any updates- was thinking of going by there tonight. I called the number on their website, but it put me straight through to voicemail. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
