Silk Road Restaurant

Super thank you msprnt for your kind reply, your words are about exactly what I expected --- probably some real parking, more expensive restaurant location costs, but food quality still very good. I truly appreciate your comments as I have to come down 27 north of 7 so just not in the neighbourhood, but I make a list of stops to shop, such as Starskys, maybe Sanremo Bakery, have coolers in the car with ice packs, etc. and make trips even more worthwhile. Overdue to get to Silk Road!

Silk Road Restaurant

Haven't been to this restaurant since it's Horner Etobicoke location and it's been a time since the move to Dundas St. East in Mississauga. The two times we previously went were to begin with quite an experience and worth the visit for the food. Anyone offer any more recent comments, food, etc. would be appreciated.

Mad Mexican: New Mexican Place from the people behind Frida's

After the Blue Jays game last Saturday, we intended to stop at the Mad Mexican on the way home. Food was as usual excellent! I thought I missed it, but drove on to turn around and to my surprise found they had moved a little further north still on the east side of Jane. Much larger restaurant area, very busy, and several large groups came in after us.

The popularity of Swiss Chalet seems to be waning in the GTA. Thoughts?

Once in while was ok, chicken, sauce and baked potato, but then came the crummy bun and smallest of quarter or half chickens --- no value even with coupons when you look at both price and food offered. Ribs looked horrible so never tried them. Ironically therewas an outlet in Buffalo on Niagara Falls Blvd. with great huge ribs, decades before offered here!

Any indian buffets actually worthwhile?

In area at north of Hwy. 7 & Gore Rd. Nilgiris other location has ( had have not been there in some time ) buffet lunch on Fri. Sat. and ? Sun.?, very different, but very authentic , tasty, once again different. Diners get lost within dining area as I'd guess their take out is 90%++ of regular business, perhaps special occasions would fill it up! Not anywhere what most might expect as an Indian Buffet! But, as always, venture to enjoy!

The GTA guide to Colombian empanadas (really, really long)

I am surprised that you did not get over to Mama Mia's Empanadas on Islington Ave. several blocks north of Finch. This place is exceptionl, I did an outdated post quite some time ago. To be brief, the difference today is better menu for sit down before you get your empanadas and churros to go. We recently had shared great quesadillas, a burrito not for me but I did order the Mexican sandwich which light on meat was very tasty because the bread was fantastic and when I next go there I will inquire about it, truly a most tasty bread with character!

When You Have The Urge For FOOD, TASTE, SOMETHING!!! Stuck At Home!

Thanks for info/help/direction. Laugh of all laughs just soon after posting, I opened the frig door to see if I needed to bring onions/potatoes from the basement frig as my other, she plans to cook ---- and lo and behold, after I got a haircut yesterday I bought a large container of lentils from the Indian Veg Rest next door ---- with more than half there, I have now satisfied many human needs with those lentils in a traditional wonderful spice sauce. To distract from all this positive vibe, wonderful taste --- I probably had a fair amount of salt!!! Not complaining, it was so good!!!

Nathans Hot Dogs

Yes, that was the road I was down, did not have the info you provide, thanks, Soloway's on Alness provided the clean and pure dogs you describe. the company sold and transformed from an also supplier of great kosher meats, etc. to a supplier for hot dog vendor carts with huge jars of mustard, relish, etc. After the sale at a wine/cheese show I met a younger family member working a food booth and he exclaimed huge concern about the quality of the dogs and the sale contract specified a length of time re. quality and the new company did comply! But my first box was 100%, the second ah when I went back the third time mentioning inedible chunks, bits ----- I was simply told I WAS LUCKY previous quality versus what was now sold. First time I learned LUCKY had to do with an edible!!!

When You Have The Urge For FOOD, TASTE, SOMETHING!!! Stuck At Home!

Yah, there are a lot of us out there at times with an urgent food desire, not knowing what, why, but in short for example. To begin with if to dine out or pick up I am not in the game, aimless. Most my day will be packing parcels for the post office tomorrow, normal Sunday. So, heavens what am I craving, desiring, will cook today, don't know but do want. In terms of creativity, lots of opportunity, but am mindless as to direction! Not going out for certain, so I wonder present/past/future, these moments, I think there are decisions now being made by other posters, do not think I am alone, let us end with a satisfying result in a decision, a decision,oh!!!

Nathans Hot Dogs

This is not likely a distributor problem, thinking of all the food and not food items manufactured in huge quantities and available. The problem is likely first that the ability to provide quantity limits the ability to present the product properly, the sale of the company and product would soon make availability viable but likely affecting price/quality! Secondly, well large retailers do charge suppliers to stock product, a great source of revenue, the more paid, better exposure! Nathan's perhaps does not have financial resources to expand and stands fast to assure quality. Who would not want to invent and sell a better mouse trap, sorry no mouse recipes!

Picko Lime Vietnamese Cuisine --- Vaughn Mills

Well Pho Anh, yes I did get there earlier than expected, today before noon! First I did a foodyDudey and did a menu search Tuesday evening. #1 the Lucky Bamboo menu one that draws or withdraws you with the expanded menu with not just Vietnamese, but Thai offerings, even one dish has Udon noodles, all in all I will try sometimes several dishes I expect. My go to place in plaza with different building with just expected average/good cuisine is Hong Phat, food is good and sufficient and well priced! But today Pho Anh, gee I hate to not be positive. When pre checking the internet menu, I kind of found it small, and what you see is what I got -- the bowl smaller than usual, adequate meat where some places skimp but give me enough good veggies without any meat, I can be very happy. At Pho Anh, ordering B1 ended up with B2, confusion from the start as it kept getting explained to me about the beef tendon, and I said yes and it should be soft, no comprehension and just ordered B@, and beef was not that as presented on menu, additional ho hum, the presenting plate was small with fewer bean sprouts, basil, etc., fitting that smaller plate of Pho. The key, ahhhh, the key, soup presented without broth AROMA of welcoming herbal spice,,,, made up for with over salted/MSG flavour, not a pretty taste. A good bowl of Pho at least arrives with inviting broth aroma, then you might hit excess of salt/MSG! Just saying, once is enough! Will stick with Picko Lime for excellence and Hong Phat for the usual expectancy. In the immediate area if the basic is what one wants within Vaughan Mill on a further strip plaza there is Pho 99??? only good thing is they do open earlier, a place also nearby on Jane St. one on Weston Rd. closer to Major Mac. and one on Major Mac. closer to Keele,,, will keep Hong Phat for regularly best price/food and this Picko Lime to want to try the menu!!!!!! Nuff Said, I'm sure, especially because our Toronto North West GTA is not well talked about, more so if it is Italian the more into that GTA NW area!

Three of us went to Picko Lime, again ordered Spring Rolls, but a double order and it again was great! Sorry to be short as my car is at my mechanic's shop and I will be needing it later, so I am rushing. Rather than get into much info, just will day we all ordered rice dshes, all excellent, #30, 31 and I had 35. Will be back in the area next Wednesday after a morning Doctor appointment, so will try lunch at Pho Ahn with report to follow!

Kleinburg copper creek

You have encountered an interesting situation --- dining at a golf club at the worst of winter. Not only that, the North West GTO and not to mention the north west etobikoke area for general info. At my employment, a Golf Course Manager would always drop off a dozen bagels, well he never said come dine. come buffet, etc.

What type of cuisine do you NOT like?

Don't get me wrong as we use fish sauce at home in varying food preparations very often, but our Government which regulates to forever, after a study, will not release the results, leading me to wonder if the more famous, the more expensive, etc., ---- what is in, what is the best fish sauce. I am guessing it is a country situation to not offend the producers, keep that economy viable to increased sales. And of course the locals have used it for many generations. Still Fish Sauce is what it is, but when tax dollars go to a study, we should have that information. Look at all the food labelling, but that wonderful Fish Sauce makes you feel like you are in Las Vegas with pockets full of money --- but blind folded, hands tied behind your back. Yes Fish Sauce does add a lot of good flavor +++?????????????

What type of cuisine do you NOT like?

I like Indian food, but have to step back a bit in my desire to enjoy it. I love the taste and the spices, but the heavy use of spices highly exceeds government rules/regulations/levels, etc. of the bad or harmful " things " contaminents, etc. In this case the more is in the great tastes, and the more is why to be sensible.

Looking for ideas in Koreatown.

I would suggest a restaurant on Yonge north of Steeles on the east side, do not know the name, been there at least 5 or 6 times. It is about 3 lights/blocks north of Steeles, at Clark I believe, small strip plaza a British pub sign easily seen next door, check out the Persian store at the other end of this mini store strip with it's décor for dried fruits and nuts. The restaurant is excellent, plain décor, heck after those several visits, I do not know if they are licenced, ha!

Actually looked into Lucky Bamboo that day, which has been there for many years and thought it might be crowded due to visual so we were headed to a third restaurant just a few more doors down, never got there when the combination of Picko Lime interior appearance and window posted menu drew us in. Interesting with 3 Vietnamese restaurants within not too many doors apart and one just up a stretch of stores a minute away. The Pho Ga must be good, just a dish I never order due to decades agn of trying it in Toronto on Spadina and finding poor broths and or meat watery! I will try Lucky Bamboo, but still have not, would you believe due to it's signage which promotes Bubble Tea more than restaurant, can't miss the dark green sign, Picko Lime just steps away.

New Yorker looking for quintessential Toronto cheap eats

Sorry, did not think of an out of towner, etc. Anyway in good weather, I'd bus it up as opposed to subway, looking is good, from Suliko, just back over to Yonge Street, south of Steeles are many Korean and Persian restaurants/bakeries/food stores worth an interesting tour and pick up items. Consideration for next time in much better walking weather!

Gee Whiz a minute walk off Steeles at Alness once you get off the bus! Sorry, I drive, but the restaurant is accessible without having to make an appointment with Santa Claus if you think the Black Sea is hard to get to! We do live in the real and unreal world!

First must state, car access highly required most would say! Have been in so many predictable a ok ho hum get what you expect Vietnamese restaurants. Well, a visit yesterday proved to be a very highly acceptable, enjoyable and surprisingly overall worth repeated visits without doubt!

First the interior, nice soothing dark grey painted, a series of booths on the left, chairs and backing length of padded seating on the right, lots of room in the middle between, not crowded. The washroom has a door allowing a small area from which to enter your selected choice! Front to back, appears so fresh, so clean, very rare indeed!

Service excellent, different than the normal standard, table well set up, example hoisin and chile is brought to the table in 100% clean plastic bottles more like mustard dispensers.

Food ordered was excellent, appetizer of spring rolls brought about 6 small ones not overly filled, but one of the best tasty, fresh wrappers ever tasted. I ordered the Pho Rare Sirloin to delight, soup dish ridged within, not a typical flat interior.

My guest ordered a rice/grilled vegetables/lemongrass chicken plate, with a fried egg requested as well. This entrée so interesting on a large square plate. The rice was piled high in a pyramid shape, grilled vegetables had a lot of flavour as did the chicken, also on the plate a large piece of fresh lettuce with carrot/daikon radish strips.

The menu offered as a whole I am sure offers great possibilities!

During the course of our meal the chef, an elderly gentleman I noticed came to other tables and after a time came to make sure that we were happy with our food, etc.

To find Picko Lime, it is not in the plaza itself but north of the mall in the series of strip stores, closer to Jane Street.

Dragon Centre Mall Midland Sheppard Area Take Out

Got to check out the area, plazas, etc. and because I had extra time ended up to beat the rush hour at Metro Square in Warden Steeles area. So ended up enjoying a simple bowl of curry Laska that to my pleasant surprise as I ate more became wonderfully hot and spicy. Did not properly check out other stalls and selected two take out dishes. Thanks for info nevertheless!!!!

Dragon Centre Mall Midland Sheppard Area Take Out

warlock, they once had about 7 locations, but what I was told about the closings was that a group of businessmen supposedly set up the businesses to easily immigrate, but later on deciding to invest differently with the sad result that only one location remains. I will be there at the end of the month as the family will be returning from a vacation and not knowing when they will be here, a selection of foods to heat up will make it convenient. Usually, I have a lunch of Won Ton Noodle Soup and the take out order among my favourites would be the Singapore a thin curry rice noodle, the Bangkok a thick rice noodle with beef and black bean sauce, 1 or 2 orders of Yang Chow Fried Rice and for certain 2 orders of Curry Chicken, a Malaysian style curry that has to be amongst the very best available. One thing is if you has for lots of their small containers of chili in oil, do transfer them to a container at home because the heat eats the plastic with passage of time.

Yes the Won Ton Noodle Soup is what I have for lunch while waiting for my take out orders.

On business in the area Wednesday and would appreciate info on take out --- conditions good quality, will not need rice, median price, and especially to travel for several hours and be excellent leftovers for the next day and possibly evening Thursday. Of course expect Chinese, oriental, but any flavourful cuisine welcome. Thanks for any assistance, want to try a different spot, anyway will be at my regular stop at the end of the month, Noodle Delight over at Victoria Park.
