European Meats Closing Need Alternative.

If you have to be kind of downtown, prices higher, but selection at the St. Lawrence Market might do the trick, out into lower Etobicoke at the Jutland location, a higher chice though!

Fine Hakka Style Chinese Restaurant

I have been back a few times since and the food is so fresh and well prepared. In my posting, I should have titled it different as the North West corner of the city is the location, hard to get to for many. Tried different items, all excellent. Anyone in the area should check it out. What I love is the the really artful, wonderful sound in the cooking you can clearly hear the rings, clangs, etc. Adds to the great food!!!!!!!!!!!!!

New Pancer's Deli

Juno, you are correct that there was a Red Pancer;s in that plaza south east corner of Dufferin & Steeles, it was excellent dine in or buy meat take out priced and sliced by the pound!!

Fine Hakka Style Chinese Restaurant

You will want to check this out, the title Fine...Restaurant is a quote from Lunch Special menu!

Just before continuing, a few doors away is an interesting looking place that serves kebobs, etc. a separate unit, business.

Let's get to the meat of this posting, the location is just barely west of Hwy. 27 at 1747 Albion Rd., great food for the far North west corner of Toronto!!!! Phone 416 740-5570!!!

Further, today a lunch, hmmm Hakka, here we try again!!!!

Sorry, if I may be a little long in this posting, but here it is worth it!!!

In the past I have tried various restaurants with little Hakka success, basically going from a terrible to various mediocre or barely passable! I have a method in analysis, trying first Chilly Chicken or if daring a Beef dish which sometimes taste and texture can be beyond comprehension!!!!

So today, went in, saw lunch special, Hakka, looked inside and it looked above average in space, decor, etc. Apprehensive, I went for the Chlilly Chicken and now the fabulous fun starts!

The lunch special also comes with pop or spring roll or soup, so with 4 choices of soup, I did not recognize, ordered the Ludhiana Soup. A check of Ludhiana describes it as a city area in the Indian Punjab region! The soup was spicy, tasty and best described as indescribable! I can only say the base could have been goat, but on the menu the soup is described as chicken or vegetable. The base was dark and flavourful, believe chicken and quite small bits of many vegs and? --- a terrific soup!!!!!!!!!!!! Excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Chilly Chicken was the best, absolutely far beyond any other I have tried. The chicken with perfect crisp sat on a bed of rice with a delicate brown sauce and lots of onion cooked to a perfect taste, size and texture!!!! Excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That was the meal, the service equally excellent and caring, husband cook very generous to meet diners, wife attentive hostess, for my order and other people ordering! Take out orders were going out in a large bag!

An important thing to discuss is timing, problem is some places in that no sooner than you order and food arrives. I can tell you that I did have a waiting time of 5 minutes plus for each item, but it was obvious that some time and attention was placed on my order --- and other patrons orders!!! There was obvious love and care in the orders!!!

Anybody in the north west corner of Toronto/Etobicoke, please try and post, of course everyone able to get there, please consider this very " Fine Hakka Style Chinese Restaurant "!

My words of caution are that, please understand that after that wonderful lunch, I feel that I did err. The Lunch Special was only $4.99, even a Fortune Cookie added ---- and so satisfied and leaving a $2 tip, I honestly very truly feel I should have added to my tip amount!!!!

I truly do hope that more people will check this restaurant and report. I intend to do so, but it could be tomorrow or a week or so.

Not often that one can say that upon 1 single initial visit, one has faith in the entire menu!!!!!!!

A Wonderful Surprise Today, yes indeed!!!

Danforth & Woodbine, O'Connor Drive Best bets For Late Saturday Lunch

Thanks so far, looks like Bistro is the magic word with 2 good choices to consider. Will also be considering further west on Danforth, or Victoria Park as well as our vehicle will allow us to get around!

Danforth & Woodbine, O'Connor Drive Best bets For Late Saturday Lunch

Looking for any dine in cuisine, can be spicy or not, reasonable food quality & quantity, economical or mid range, but not high end priced! Alcohol not a requirement on this occasion. Thanks for your assistance!!!!!!!!!!

Empanadas in the 905

I usually buy 6 or 12 to go depending on my whim, they go to a freezer and once thawed heated in an oven, but never a microwave which tends to kill breads, dough products suchas empanadas and jamaican patties! It is right on the north east corner.

Empanadas in the 905

Not in Vaughn or area certainly that I know about. However, it is not far to drive down Islington Ave., south of Steeles where Mamma Mia at 28 Slatterly Rd. M9L 1E8 , phone 647-351-1477. They have perhaps Empanadas with 8 or 10 different fillings. You can sit down and have a pretty fine sandwich for lunch.

Terra

1sweetpea,s posting on Terra is right on! At Terra every visit always provides excellence, very professional!

Moving to Petawawa - help please!

I just posted a very helpful reply and for some reason it was deleted. I believe in my posting and it truly is unfortunate that the deletion as intelligent and helpful as it was is gone. I know Pembroke is closer, but North Bay and Ottawa are logical long drives away. Briefly, I did originally to be brief suggest first get to know the locals who would be helpful, and secondly that 2 refrigerators and two freezers would be helpful, especially if one may like various foods of ethnic origin, a trip to Ottawa once a month or every 5 or 6 weeks may be required. Oh Well!!!!!! The request for an organic grocer, delivery, shipping fresh produce to Petawawa would be a tough find indeed!!

Finding pizza mozzarella cheese in the GTA (other than Grande)

I have stopped at some other cheese factories and unfortunately they did not have sales to the public. Will check further as I believe I did find one small factory outlet in the Woodbridge area! While you quite properly point out cost, which has been an issue for years, next time in Grande Cheese, ask them what other cheeses you can use for pizza and add some to make more interesting home pizza. Chances are that it will cost even more but on the first count you will have more interesting pizza and on the second you still will be ahead pricewise compared to retail bought pizza!!!

Looking for good source of stewing lamb (frozen is OK too) Brampton Caledon Orangeville

Your options are not hard to fulfill, so not knowing whether Orrangeville, Brampton or Bolton is the most convenient for you, simply check your local yellow pages under butchers and you should find as a starting point "butchers" that you want to talk to. And the butchers in your local supermarkets are proud of their profession, and if their store is unable to be a source of supply as you need it, many will be glad to provide information to you as if they know and their employer cannot provide the product, there is no loss to the store, but a gain in goodwill for them to assist a customer!!!

Brampton chow

I am never in theMall at Westwood very long, so rushing through, I always get a take out Roti Trini Style. I always intend to once sit down and try perhaps the soup at the Korean place, will do so next time! But posting years after your post that you are so right to mention the lack of any chain restaurants!

ANYTHING even remotely good in the Finch/Steeles - 400/Weston Road quadrant?

Tried the Hakka Place at Finch and Milvan. The warning was the very inexpensive price, and the food was just plain not worth going back to, unenjoyable! I would suggest the Vietnamese places in the immediate Finch Weston Rd area, Pho Dau Bo behind the Shell station one of the better ones!

Thai Shan Inn --- Anyone Recently A Customer

Oops, my reply was to refer to the Mango Salad being fine cold upon travel, but It reads as I heat the Mango Salad, sorry, the heating was a reference to dishes such as Pad Thai, Rice, Curries, my sincere apologies as to posting error.

Thai Shan Inn --- Anyone Recently A Customer

Agree with almost all comments made, Thai Shan Inn was always pretty good to eat in, no decor, but one reason I posted is because of in most restaurants the take out was dreaded. I found that my take out items, carefully selected from Thai Shan Inn were after an hour of travel, were unusually fine at home. Mango Salad fine cold and lightly reheating by microwave did not affect the dishes. I will visit the new location for takeout as I can, likely a month or so away though as I get into that area only a few times a year. Super Thanks!!!

La Taquiza: Mexican food in the GTA -- no, really!

Was at La Taquiza today for lunch, very, very enjoyable! The menu has been expanded and Hector was cordially serving, being helpful and greeting, conversing with his guests! Certainly the expanded menu will have me returning more often!!!!!!!!!

Thai Shan Inn --- Anyone Recently A Customer

While on Eglinton years it was quite very busy and the food was interesting, often pretty good, certainly proclaimed as one of the first Toronto Thai restaurants ( Chinese ifluence as well ). I haven't been there for years, they are now on Dufferin north of Eglinton. Please express your thoughts as to the restaurant these days as to good, the dishes, etc!!!

Best Cheap Eats in Toronto?

Wiley, interesrting thought, maybe Korean on North Yonge open late, but in an area not in late often! When lucky enough to find musical acts I want to enjoy, it`s been of late the former El Mocombo, the Silver Dollar less so, Hugh`s Room, so it`s the Gardiner and 427 home. You have trough planted a seed of thought for Korean late night as on occasion I can be crossing the North Yonge area ---- Thanks For Suggesrtion, I`m sure you`re right as many Night Clubs are open late, Korean Cuisine!!!

Vegetarians - or those (like me) just leaning that way - which restaurants are best??

ManAbout, interesting reply, I try to keep my meals less filling, so I very carefully check with the server if I can change a traditional Thali Plate by removing the rice or naan choice and instead, please replace with lentils, chick peas, salad as to the chef's offer, etc., to not offend the cook!!! There are so many comments available to make, but I would just like to say that on the Thali Plate at Tandoori Time on Albion Road near Hwy. 27, the Chick Pea offering is absolutely super sensational!!! I think the creation offers special spicing, thickness, likely a use of Indian sugar, a sensational use of Chick Peas, so little on the plate, ever so wonderful!! Restaurants have to understand that all customers accept the menu offer, but many of us can perfect it for us on an individual basis and subjected to our requests of original items done differently at the chef's desire!!!! I can only offer an experience at Alness and Finch where there was a former Noodle Delight restaurant. A Chicken BBQ Restaurant was in a building next door and thinking to try it, I left because they would not substitute fries for some salad without extra charge. So, within the plaza I continued with the former Noodle Delight, the superb decades old San Francesco sandwiches ---- and the promising Chicken BBQ, never used it, gone within some months and now is a Tim Horton's!!!!!!

Best Cheap Eats in Toronto?

Wiley, always love your offerings, even once our messages have crossed the Chowhound path ---- but while many others also enjoy Korean Pork Bone Soup, I truly suggest Pho as a tastier and more complex wonderful soup. Granted, you won't get the fantastic Korean side dishes. As for Pork Bone Soup, I hate the flavour of boiled pork and bones, but I decided oh what the heck try it, and as expected my palate found it so horrible,I think only a cup of chili would make me enjoy, maybe! So many, many other better Korean dishes, having said that, probably a thousand or two Pork Bone Soup dishes are served daily!!!!! Bottom line, certainly a bowl of Vietnamese Pho and it's combined complexity and simplicity is a sensible alternative! To the poster richardq, it is ironic that you mention Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, but after coming out of a club after a great late night of music entertainment, I just would love a great bowl of Pho at 2.00 a.m.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

End grain Maple butcher block/cutting board?

Petek, when you go to Golda's Kitchen, I suggest not worrying about catalog, in stock etc, especially so that you did mention GTA. As one living in the North West GTA, I have learned to plan trips, make several stops of benefit, etc. The point is agreed to avoid the horrible and overpriced shipping charges. Better as you said GTA and plan a Chowhound trip if heading to an area you might not find yourself in again or not often. I have done this hundreds of times, and it does make so much more sense than paying such shipping costs. A bonus might be that Golda's Kitchen may even have other items of interest to you or your friends/relatives!!! Shipping Charges Begone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Best Smoked Salmon in Toronto [Moved from Canada board]

Just a reply as to anyone seeking smoked fish in the north west around Weston Road and Steeles. I get at the factory smoked cisco, rainbow trout, salmon, whitefish, etc.. Central-Epicure is located at 501 Garyray Drive M9L 1P9, phone 416 745-5297!!!!! I have beeen going there for decades, very satisfied, the thing is that it is a Factory and when you order, they will bring out the item(s) and show them to you!

ISO Authentic Italian Bread

I go to many bakeries mentioned, but about a decade and a half ago, I gave up looking for another bread I used to buy on Bloor St. W. ----- Olive Paste Bread ----- next time in San Remo, I'll ask them and see if they might be able to bake the fabulously flavoured Olive Paste Bread!!!

Good Pizza in Vaughan/Woodbridge

The location of Pizza T'aliano is where aamma's franchise was, not favouring franchises, tried it long ago, Italian pizza makers and result was a truly horrible pizza, couldn't believe it! Bottom line is I guess if a poor restaurant goes and is replaced by a similar one,I am suspicious that the new one will not have new/fresh owners, etc.

Good Pizza in Vaughan/Woodbridge

A couple I'd suggest first Ricci's near the Longos store at Weston rd. and Langstaff for regular pizza and Nino Daversa Bakery at Kipling and Woodbridge avenue for thin crust pizza with wood burning in the oven, both take out best, but you can eat in if desired in simple ordinary cafeteria atmosphere.

Kleinburg-Lunch or Dinner

5+ minutes north of Kleinburg on Hwy 27, check out Daniels Of Nobleton, chef Daniel Gilbert is exclellent and has a superb knowledge of wines.

Warning on a couple of horrible tasting products!

2 comments =-=- T&T simply to shop carefull, the simple ready food counter has lost any lustre, only product always appreciated has lost it's minitive glow in time, the spicy tofu has no heat and less and less and less chile flakes, I think it is time to call the dish extra spicy tofu = - once there is no taste or trace of heat ------ Metro, dead in the water, products under the corporate banner best 99.9999% best avoided, seems to me that the products are never researched for taste and quality, but rather simply bought at the least cost to sell at retail, a very big Ugh to the Metro line!!!

Where to find smoked fish?

Check out The Smoked Fish Factory -- Central-Epicure in the Steeles and Weston rd. area! Phone 416 745-4323. They have expanded to a true small retail area. Some of my favourites are Cisco, Trout, Salmon!!

Five Guys Burgers and Fries opening in Kingston

On trip south, in Florida tried both Five Guys and Shake Shack when forced to choose during a drive day with time limited. Both excellent burgers for certain, especially compared to the offerings generally available in Ontario. Best Florida chain find though was a Cuban chicken chain Pollo Tropicale, terrific!!
