Birthday Sushi
You may want to have a better atmosphere than Zo offers, unless you're going JUST for the sushi.
Anyone know where I can find Sushi and Sake Pairings in Los Angeles?
just be aware that the chefs at Toranoko brought the Matsuhisa style with them. If you don't like your tuna marinated, seared, sauced, with a garlic chip, exotic onions and a flourish... it may not be the place for you.
downtownish amazingness! culture shock?
Wine and cheese at Mignon, dinner at Rivera, after dinner drinks at Villians Tavern, late night coffee and dessert at CoffeeBar on Spring.
Church & State in Downtown LA or Pizzeria Mozza in Newport Beach?
Church and State wins for date night. The room, bar, nice lighting, overall vibe is about as good as it gets. The food, although a shadow of it's former self, is still good.
I haven't been to Mozza Newport but if it's consistent with LA, the food definitely wins. It's OK for a casual date night if you don't want the pressure.
La Parilla (Sunset in SL location) closed?
That must be why I saw Elvis on a street corner in Hollywood a couple of nights ago.
Handsome Coffee Roasters -I really liked it.
If you like the taste of espresso without sugar, then you're right, it doesn't need it. For those of us who prefer sugar with espresso, I must respectfully disagree.
It doesn't make up for the weak crema though. It's the same with the beans I tried at home and now at the machines at the Fix who use it. The baristas there were complaining about it too.
Best Omakase in Los Angeles for $100?
A little politeness goes a long ways. If you sit at the bar and will eat without reservation, you'll get the best they have to offer.
(Tell him you know Shige from Shibucho LA...)
Best Omakase in Los Angeles for $100?
Shibucho is generally over $100 nowadays.
Asanebo has a couple of set menus that are under $100 as I recall.
Toshi Sushi downtown is a better bet than Gen IMO.
Shibucho Costa Mesa would do it, how far are you willing to drive?
Pasadena with Toddlers?
Naga Naga Ramen on Colorado is pretty good, fast, inexpensive, and you can sit in front of a giant fish tank to keep them entertained.
Theres the Central Park just down the road on Fair Oaks.
Handsome Coffee Roasters, WTH?
First, no. Espresso IMO and to my taste needs sugar no matter how 'right' it is.
Second, for my two espressos they weren't doing it right - weak light crema.
Handsome Coffee Roasters, WTH?
Show me that coffee shop in Italy that doesn't offer sugar. It's not the one that the angry mob burned down is it?
Handsome Coffee Roasters, WTH?
All of the praise has driven me to try Handsome Coffee Roasters twice. A nice looking space with little parking and a very professional and polite staff.
The first time I had espresso with milk, which was very good but IMO not a fair judge of coffee. The second I tried both their blend and single origin espresso. The coffees came out looking pretty good, although the crema was thin. In fact, way too thin for a better espresso bar nowadays. But then, when I asked where the sugar was, they told me (politely) that they do not have sugar because they want people "to taste the natural sweetness of the coffee." To me, that's like saying "we don't add salt to out food so you can taste the natural flavors of the ingredients." Come on, it's espresso, it's not naturally sweet. Coffee is bitter and espresso needs sugar. Don't believe me, ask an Italian.
Good fishmonger / Seafood Market near Downtown/Echo Park/Silver Lake
Try McCalls on Hillhurst.
Delivery in Silver Lake/ Echo Park area?
I haven't ordered delivery from Flore in a couple of years, maybe not.
I ordered from El Greco cafe a few weeks ago which was good for delivery. I have yet to find even passable Chinese. Palermo delivers if you can stomach it, so does Louse's. I also used to order from Los Cobanos for Mexican / Salvadoran.
Delivery in Silver Lake/ Echo Park area?
Italian from Farfalla
I think Michelangelo still does delivery
Mediterranean from Sepan Chicken
Vegetarian / Vegan from Flore
Hollywood Pies is pizza but much better than the other options in the area.
Depending on where you are, to go from Forage and Local are really good options.
Water Grill
"I have been to Water Grill three times in the past couple of weeks..."
Haven't they been closed for a remodel for the past few months?
Malo: Really?
The chewy chips used to be better as I recall. They're pretty disgusting last time I went.
I have never had anything good there, but I still like the place (sort of.)
We're eloping! Where should we celebrate, just the two of us.
Second Bel Air, but why not eat at the Bel Air? IMO checking in and not leaving is worth it.
Any good French restaurants in LA?
I'm not so sure Balthazar is so strong for French food either. It's good, but in NY it's a stone's throw away from much better.
Church and State is probably the closest in LA.
Walked Out of Pacific Dining Car & Went to Taylor's
Are you saying Taylors "the former" has dry aged prime steaks?
Walked Out of Pacific Dining Car & Went to Taylor's
have to agree with sushigirlie.
scottca075, a lot of restaurants stay in business or go out of business irregardless of food.
3 days in LA with kids -- restaurant recommendations?
Travel how far? Dim Sum is not too far away.
Korean BBQ. even closer.
OC Steak House like Peter Lugar
It's long on atmosphere and legend, they're great at self promotion.
The meat is not better than any other top notch steakhouse, the preparation is sometimes iffy because the place gets so busy, the sides might as well not even be on the menu.
Still a great place, better than Sparks? I dunno....
Italian in Old Town Pasadena
It's not much, but for an Il Fornaio that's one of the better ones.
OC Steak House like Peter Lugar
I should clarify, I'm not suggesting La Cave is on the same level as Lugers. It does have a feel different than your typical steakhouse as does Lugers.
