Traveling from NJ to Bar Barbor

Back to the truck we go. What if it is raining? Another choice that is indoors in Portland for lobster rolls?

Traveling from NJ to Bar Barbor

Looking for a breakfast place, probably in Conneticut to get us going Last year we stopped at a place called "Pancake World" and while it was okay..we would really like to try something else this year? Also,we will be stopping at Portland mid way for lobster rolls. Last year we stopped at the truck. Is it worth stopping at Twin Lights instead? Is the parking good there? Also looking for a place on way back to NJ for lunch again in Ct. Last year we did Pepes - do not want to do that again. I know its a lot of questions. Thanks in advance.

This is what we ate - Bar Harobr and Kennebunkport

Had planned to go to Billys but there just wasn't time. Another reason to go back I guess.

This is what we ate - Bar Harobr and Kennebunkport

We ate breakfast included in our hotel every day with the exception of one day Café This Way. Cute place. No waiting. Friendly waitress. Great pancakes. What's not to like.

Bar Harbor: Thurstons, Reading Room, Mache Bistro, West Side Café for dinner. Was not crazy for Thurstons. Understand it was a pound but found the whole thing very messy. Sides were all disappointing (corn, coleslaw, blueberry cake). Chowder was the worst we've ever eaten. Hard to eat lobster with plastic fork and knife and Thurstons was $91 for two. We spent slightly more for a better meal at Reading Room with better everything. JMO. Reading Room impressed us. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff and best blueberry pie dessert. Mache Bistro was "okay". I wanted it to be better but it wasn't. Glad we went. Menu very limited. Inside dark and dreary. For the same amount of money we ate better at Reading Room and watched the sun set. We only went to West Side because we just wanted to go as we were to a walk in kind of place. Had a quick chowder at Galyns. Nothing to write home about. We loved the ice cream at Udder Heaven and went several times. Jordan Pond turned out to be a wonderful surprise. Went twice. Lobster Stew was outstanding. And those popovers. Would go again in a minute but parking was PITA.

Kennebunkport- First night at Cape Porpoise Chowder House. LIked it much better than Thurstons. What a cute town. Great atmosphere. Next night we did On The Marsh. Very pretty place. Good waitress. Food was okay. Would not go back only because I would rather try another place. Husband had cupcake with glass jug of milk with red and white straw. So cute and delicious. Stopped at Mabels for late lunch. Good lobster roll and chowder. Friendly waitress. We liked it a lot. Also stopped at Lord's. Had to have lobster stew as suggested by chow reader. Hubby had lobster roll. While I enjoyed the stew liked Jordan's version much more. Loved the place though. Felt like all the locals go there and it was a nice place to go to. Tried Rocco's ice cream too. Reminded me of Bent Spoon in Princeton. Had a goat cheese and wine ice cream. Good stuff.

Stopped at Peppe's for Pizza in New Haven on the way back. Something different. Also had lobster roll in Bite Into Maine Truck. Loved it. Took chowhounder's advice and ordered the corn/blueberry salad. Sounds quirky but somehow it all worked. Loved the rootbeer. Very clean. Not a bug or fly in sight. Friendly owners . Love that there are bowls of water all over Maine for pets. Also stopped at 2 Fat Cats for stuff but they had minimal things for sale. Perhaps it was too late at 3 PM on a Saturday? Did grab a whoopee pie which was outstanding but it would have helped if the cashier was friendly and smiled. Or talked. Or something. But that's just me. Come on. Its a bakery. How can you not be happy.?

Love Maine. Can't wait to go back. Wonderful experience. I'd go back tomorrow in a heartbeat.

To me there are no stand outs this year. In previous years there was a clear winner/runner up the whole season. I can't stand Natasha and feel the only reason why she stopped saying she's pretty is because of the nasty remarks she read about herself on fb/twitter. I just don't care about any of them winning.

Have you met a "celebrity chef?" Were you pleased or disappointed?

That's a great story.

I saw Mario Balati as I was leaving Bloomingdales and he was walking in for a book signing. I simply said "hi Mario" and he looked at me in disbelief and shock. I recently saw a live viewing of the Chew. Mario was no different that time either. While the other panelist..Michael Symon and Carla, and Daphnie and the guy from What Not to Wear..all were friendly especially Michael and Carla..Mario stayed far far from the audience and never acknowledged us either. I mean how hard is it to wave.

Driving from NJ to Bar Harbor..rest stop other than Friendlys, etc

We are thinking we will probably stop in Ct. We think . On the way there. Is their any place enroute...on the road..not out of the way..other than Cracker Barrels and Friendlys and the like that's decent. Also for the trip home. Breakfast going. Lunch coming back. Saturdays for both.

Dress Codes for some restaurants?

thanks bob

Dress Codes for some restaurants?

For places like Mache Bistro in Bar Harbor or On The Marsh in Kennebunkport..do we need to "dress better". Does my husband need to bring a pair of dockers for the trip? I've heard someone say that all Maine is casual but I don't want to walk in with shorts where it might be "frowned upon" Also, the Bite Into Maine truck..I know its in Ft Williams Park but how big is this park. And is this truck something that we will immediately see or do we have to go into the park. Any landmarks near it? Thanks guys.

Judging Paula contiues

Meanwhile Russel Simmons tweets a Harriet Tubman rape video and says "its the funniest thing ever". Anybody dropping him? Is he losing endorsements? Is this headlines anywhere? Guess all that money and yoga can't fix stupid.

4 dinners in Bar Habor

I just got yelled at at Trip Advisor for asking this question. The expert accused me of being "paralyzed with fear" because I'm asking too many questions. How's that for a warm welcome?

4 dinners in Bar Habor

I can't believe I am having a problem finding decent restaurants in this area. We have decided on Thurstons and Reading Room so far. Mache Bistro seems to be hit or miss..some say its over priced and the food isn't so great. Considered Trenton Lobster but they don't even give you butter unless you pay for it. Fantom had also very mixed reviews. Considered Burning Tree but someone wrote on Trip Advisor thee was a "gigantic bug" in the salad. And we don't want to go to a pub.. So where does that leave us? West Street Café?

Birthday Dinner for 20 year old

Thank you all so much for the advice! My daughter was at Porta last night and she and her friends really enjoyed themselves..We called ahead for a party of 6 and they did not have to wait long at all. They are thinking of returning they liked it so much. Thanks again!

What do you recommend for Bar Harbor Dinner?

We are getting breakfast daily in our hotel but might try Café This Way one day just because everyone is raving. I am checking Trip Advisor but I have been disappointed before based on their advice. You guys know everything. So far I've got Thurston's Lobster Pound and Burning Tree. Thinking about Reading Room. Any advice?

What do you think of these places or is there something better? BH/Kenny

Not even for a lobster roll? Barnacle Bill's made the best list for that. And there are mixed reviews about Mabels and someone here last week said Nuans lobster was fresh and not cold stored. So confused and overwhelmed!

What do you think of these places or is there something better? BH/Kenny

Thank you I will add to my list. But what do you think of my choices?

What do you think of these places or is there something better? BH/Kenny

We are driving from Jersey to Bar Harbor and then staying in Kennebunkport for two nights on the return. I'm not sure of the Bar Habor places..most of mixed reviews. So far I am thinking Burning Tree, Thurstons and Trneton Bridge Lobster Pound. Should I look into The Reading Room? Fathom has mixed reviews and someone here said to stay away from it. Mache Bistro sounds too small and again some have had poor experience there. How about Gaylyns? For Kennebunkport area I am thinking Lobster Shack Perkins Cove, Ogunquit Lobster Pound, MC Perkins Cove, Barnacle Bills, Ocean, Clam Shack, Kennebunkport Inn. Of course I have to eliminate some of those because its two lunches and two dinners. Also will stop in Bite of Maine in Portland. Good choices or are there better for seafood.Prefer casual to fancy schmancy food. Thanks.

Birthday Dinner for 20 year old

Porta has fun but my daughter is saying "its a bar and she doesn't want to be the youngest ones there (makes face), It will be just the girls..we will not be going. Any other ideas..but that's for your recommendations anyway.

Birthday Dinner for 20 year old

This will be for my daughter and 7 friends. Looking for a fun vibe kind of place where they will like being. Do not want an "senior citizen crowd" (because I will never hear the end of it). Maybe at the shore or Red Bank. We live in Freehold. American food under $50 pp. Food should be good but not gourmet. Anything come to mind? Thanks

Will we need reservations everywhere?

We are staying in Bar Harbor for a few days and Kennebunkport for a couple of days. This will be end of August. I am still researching..however..is a week before too late to make reservations for dinner? I'm not talking about places where the chefs have won James Beard awards. Do I need to make reservations NOW? What are your recommendations for seafood in Bar Harbor and Kennebunkport for dinner. I am thinking Thurstons one night.

Where for late lunch before Bar Habor?

We were thinking of stopping in Portland on the way back from Bar Harbor to Kennebunkport. I would like to try the Bite Into Maine truck there but now you say they lack salt..more confusion! How about Nedricks in York? near the Nubble Lighthouse..is that a good place? I would hate to stop near a mall..trying to get away from all of that. Thanks for your replies.

Ice cream - jersey shore

I did not care for nagles at all. Just felt like the place is..unsanitary. Love Jersey Freeze's chocolate and black raspberry. Also like Bent Spoon and Halo in Princeton.

Oh so its going to be across from "Golden Bell Diner" or whatever that place is now called. Great. Another place to avoid in my town.

Where for late lunch before Bar Habor?

We are traveling from New Jersey to Bar Harbor. I would like to stop "somewhere" along the way in Maine..before Portland for a late lunch. We are staying in Kennybunkport for a few days on the way back..so I don't want to stop there. Can you make a suggestion that is along the way for a lobster roll or sandwich? Thanks.

Maine Lobster and Lobster Rolls

We are staying in Bar Harbor for a week. First, within that area who makes the best lobster dinner? I think I am staying away from Stewmans. Also, is there a place worth traveling back and forth to in one day for their lobster rolls, perhaps also in a cute town to look around? Thanks.

Need lunch near ABC Studios (67th and Columbus)

Yes I know. We are gonna hang around. Thanks for the replies.

Need lunch near ABC Studios (67th and Columbus)

Going to see The Chew next week. and don't know that area at all. Is there anything good in that area..we are walkers so we can go a few blocks over in any direction. No Mexican or Steak. Prefer Italian or American. Not caring about price. Thanks.

I don't like the outside challenges either. I liked it much better when they cooked all the challenges in the kitchen.
