Costco Food Finds - 4th Quarter 2014

Not so seasonal, but yesterday in Brooklyn, NY I sampled and bought Mateo's Gourmet Salsa in a quart jar for $6 and change, and it is just great. Since we like it so much, I expect it will be discontinued soon. Super flavorful with a kick, and nothing artificial in there.

Ah So sauce...Am I the only one

I hope the new recipe holds up. I remember as a kid fermented bean paste being one of the ingredients, it is no longer part of the formula. The stuff tastes amazing when it's slathered on and a little charred.

Update on Hunan Kitchen of Grand Sichuan

There's #78 under country style dishes called braised dry bean curd with smokey pork, could that be it?

Inside the restaurant, the menus we had actually said Flushing on the front.

Update on Hunan Kitchen of Grand Sichuan

We went here at 4pm on Saturday and they let us get lunch specials. They put a bowl of peanuts on the table to munch on while we perused the menu. We had minced pork with sour beans and shredded beef with hot green pepper. They were both quite spicy and smokey tasting. The pork was far more pungent tasting than the same dish at Grand Sichuan House and had a higher pork to bean ratio. Oh, the soup, well they served us an egg drop soup with pork and tomatoes. It had a really rich tasting broth and it was cold. Not chilled, just on the cool side of tepid. I chalk it up to the odd time we showed up. The staff was super friendly and attentive, we will go back and check out some more.

We always get the Sichuan food too, but our friends have ordered dishes like shrimp with broccoli, spare rib tips, fried rice, etc, and they were really good too.

Help me find Cang Ying Tou 蒼蠅頭 : "Fly's Head"

Joe's Noodle House has something very similar A56 - Chopped Leek Stem w/Pork, Garlic, and Black Bean. It's made with flowering chive.

Where to buy Proper Southern Chicken Pie?

I never would have noticed if not for your post, but I saw chicken pie - no vegetables in Whole Foods in Brooklyn at 3rd Ave and 3rd St. Don't know if it's proper southern or not.

Just moved to Bay Ridge - looking for advice (restaurants, provisions, etc)

There is a very decent vietnamese place on 4th Ave between 86th and 87th Sts, we go often for pho and spring rolls.

I don't know about country ham, but smoked ham hocks are in pretty much every supermarket.

ISO sticky natural PB

Maranatha makes organic no stir peanut butter. It has that sticky consistency. They add some palm oil to keep it from separating.

Actually, you have to have at least half of it. I once bought a tuna 4 pack, ate 3 cans then noticed that the 4th one was bulging. When I tried to return it, they refused because we had consumed 3/4 of the package. I left it with them.

Do you add the hoisin and sriracha to the pho broth?

I guess our usual place is really good, (most of the time that is, sometimes midweek I feel that they've watered it), because it's not that salty, and I know what you mean because some places I've been in and out of town are very salty and msg laden.

Best Brooklyn Dim Sum...Seriously?

We didn't have clams, there were only two of us, and the other doesn't like clams. I've had them before there and they were good.

We had eggplant stuffed with shrimp in black bean sauce, which was the best version of this dish ever, I assume it was a special because a waiter had it, not the carts.

From the carts we had fried bean curd skins stuffed with shrimp or fish paste, three large that were the size of egg rolls which they cut in half and served with worcestershire sauce, (we preferred soy), steamed bean curd skins with pork and vegetables, lo mai gai. which is sticky rice with chicken, sausage, mushrooms and sauce steamed in leaves, shumai, har gau, a bit too much for two, we were stuffed, and the bill was $19.50 plus tip.

Do you add the hoisin and sriracha to the pho broth?

Thanks! I will try that. Once, there was no omosa in my soup and they brought out some tripe in broth.

Do you add the hoisin and sriracha to the pho broth?

You're quite right, I wonder if they make the broth milder for us, knowing that is the case. I also notice that we always eat all of the herbs and most of the sprouts, the Vietnamese families not so much. This goes for the lettuce and mint with the spring rolls too.

nan xiang cold appetizer - soy bean /hard tofu / spinach - how to cook it?

Would you boil the edamame with or separate from the mustard greens?

nan xiang cold appetizer - soy bean /hard tofu / spinach - how to cook it?

I had something like this at Joe's Noodle House in Rockville, Md. The green vegetable is mustard green. The sauce tastes like light soy,and a little sesame oil, maybe a little salt. I think it's quick fried in peanut oil and then chilled.

Do you add the hoisin and sriracha to the pho broth?

I do the same with adding a little hoisin if I feel the broth is lacking. I always add herbs and bean sprouts, always dip the meat in a mix of hoisin and sriracha, usually just eat the lime or lemon. Usually leave some noodles, I wish I could get less noodles and more broth but I've been unsuccessful in getting servers to understand that.

The strange thing I've noticed lately in places in both New York and Maryland is Asian, (I assume Vietnamese), people eating the noodles and leaving most of the broth.
