Zaab-Elee, new Thai in the east village, now the best Thai in NYC, perhaps.
when i spoke to them they had waitresses from across SE asia....
Marea or The Modern?
these are 2 very very different places in feel, setting, and cuisine.
marea is a little more old school in demeanor, and the menu is far less adventurous. still delicious, and as most know by now the fusilli is one of the best single pasta dishes available in NYC
the modern is, well, more modern. the lighting is dimmer, the setting more styled, the menu more adventurous.
you will get a great meal at either - this is more about your desires and expectations than the skill in the kitchen, which is top notch in both
What Food Trend are You So Sick Of?
that is not sous vide, that's bad cooking. good sous vide is well seasoned, and cooked to a proper temperature
chowhound vs. yelp-pros & cons?
actually volume of posts is only one factor in becoming elite, and it isn't the primary one. i've known low post/ review users who were elite, as well s posters who review everything they do that are not.
chowhound vs. yelp-pros & cons?
all else being equal i would prefer to read something clever than something plodding and pedestrian
ASIAN INGREDIENT GLOSSARY - maybe more Asian food info
wiki sez:
Kung Pao chicken (宫保鸡丁, pinyin gōng bǎo jī dīng; also spelled Kung Bao chicken, Gung Po chicken or Kung Po chicken in English) is a classic dish in Sichuan cuisine, originating in the Sichuan Province of central-western China. Allegedly, the dish is named after Ding Baozhen (1820–1886), a late Qing Dynasty official. Born in Guizhou, Ding served as head of Shandong province and later as governor of Sichuan province. His title was Gōng Bǎo (宮保), or palatial guardian.[1] The name "Kung Pao" chicken is derived from this title.
During the Cultural Revolution, the dish was labeled as politically incorrect because of its association with Ding Baozhen. The dish was renamed "fast-fried chicken cubes" (hong bao ji ding) or "chicken cubes with seared chiles" (hu la ji ding) until its political rehabilitation in the 1980s.[2]

chowhound vs. yelp-pros & cons?
thats nice to hear. i got kinda bored with it all. and pissed off that my review of the modern was too damned long for them, LOL
maybe i'll return
Food/dish you are surprised hasn't caught on
again - any generalization about 300,000,000 people tends to be as false as it is true
chowhound vs. yelp-pros & cons?
of it can be, as there is no limitation on what is discussed on yelp. my point was about comparing CH and Yelp based on the talk side of yelp.
Weird/Bad Food Related Dates
it isn't the dish itself - it's that it has been deemed unacceptable by the authenticity police.....
Weird/Bad Food Related Dates
just a note - often when a guy says he doesn't have a place in mind he means "i'd just like to be on a date with you, so anyplace you enjoy and are comfortable" and not "i'm such a loser i cannot plan a date without your help"

2nd Visit to NYC....We want to be in the "know"!
meh. maybe the best thin fast food burger in NY, but, to my mind, not the best simple burger - there are plenty of pubs and diners and restaurants that make a good simple beef burger that i prefer to shake shake any day
The Best Dinner Conversation You've Ever Had...
easy (tho not a dinner party) - i met a woman at a poetry reading. she was, understandably in NYC i suppose, wary of my advances, but i was semi relentless - in a nice way of course. She liked the poetry i read at the open mike, which made her more amenable i suppose. The reading ended early, about 7:30 pm, and i wasn't supposed to meet another friend (also a poet) to take him out for birthday cocktails until 9. I said this to her and suggested we go for a drink or coffee or something. she said "I'm going out for breakfast" Undeterred i said "I love breakfast" and we went to the waverly diner. The talk flowed easily and was a great conversation.
now we are very in love we've been seeing each other for 2 years.
2nd Visit to NYC....We want to be in the "know"!
this is a good list - i'd make the following changes - papaya king (they're the original), not greys, and definitely not papaya dog.
I'd opt for a good NYC street slice, over wood or coal oven pies.
in addition to pegu, pdt, etc i'd add little branch and angels share for cocktails
for BBQ head to dinosaur - i haven't been since they moved a few blocks south, but they're my favorite BBQ in the city. (great wings - i opt for the 2nd hottest sauce, as it has great flavor as well as heat) and amazing fried green tomatoes. don't miss their syracuse potatoes either.

Fall is in the air but I have leftover pesto.............
put it on fish or baked chicken
Why is airport food so terrible at many US east coast airports?
airports are just bus stations with runways. why should there be good food in one?

that may have been true 15 years ago.
What's with Manhattan restaurants keeping their doors open with no air conditioning in 90 degree weather?
when it gets really hot, almost every restaurant in NYC expects people in shorts
How long can I keep preserved lemons?
they're probably fine. especially as the fruit will go off before the skin, and the skin is the part most used.....
ground lamb -- seeking inspiration
grilled some great lamburgers a month or so back.....
Ask Sushi Man
they use the powder because it is always available, does;t spoil, and costs less.
almost no places use the real stuff -
Would YOU try...?
i have - not my favorite, but thats because of the taste, not some intellectual aversion to the concept
and i say once again - some of you need to delight that you live in such an affluent culture that you can even form the thought of not eating organs because muscle meat is so plentiful
