What are you baking these days? May 2013 Edition This recipe for Butter Cake is so delicious, I want y'all to bake it, too. It needs no embellishment of whipped cream & berries; it stands alone. |

Duck Jaws at Cooking Papa and the Joy Of Eating Without Worrying About Manners better hot or cold? after our pile of duck chins at Great Eastern, I am appreciating the physiology of the duck in greater detail - chopsticks aside, it's all finger lickin' good |

Gifts from California to take overseas? When we travel to Japan, we take big, fluffy bath towels (yes, I know it's not a food item) and California short grain rice - in addition to the usual See's Chocolates, pistachios and almonds, and bourbon whiskey. |

Dim Sum Chowdown at Great Eastern Restaurant on Jackson St. [San Francisco Chinatown] http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/774993 Thank you to Melanie for organizing this return to Great Eastern and for gathering the 'hounds for their convivial company. It is a pleasure chowing with y'all. My favorites are the bitter melon with fish, turnip cake, and the deep fried taro - not for the boldness of flavor, these are my comfort foods. While the other dishes tickled my palate, these warmed my heart and made me smile. GE validates 2-hr parking at the Portsmouth Square Garage. Good for groups for reservations; excellent service, reliable+food. |

What are you baking these days? May 2013 Edition It's a keeper, DH likes it. Sweet and just as promised in the recipe, it's both custardy and dense but not heavy. Very satisfying with a glass of ice cold milk. The bonus is that this recipe is easy and quick. Allow ample time to let it cool before serving. We liked it even more for breakfast the next morning. |

Paul Prudhomme's Spiced Pecan Cake--your thoughts? yes, I've baked this many times since the cookbook was first published. wonderful and so-o-o Southern. I'd also made the eggplant/shrimp recipe that Cynthia posted here from Vogue and loved it. Thanks for the reminder, I'd lost my copy of it. |

Banh Xeo - SF Dish of the Month May 2013 Yes. Sao Bien has yellow mung beans in the Banh Xeo and it's a nice textural addition to the medley of flavor. |

Banh Xeo - SF Dish of the Month May 2013 DH hates wrapping the stuffed crepe in the lettuce, it never fails to fall apart and he says it is too troublesome... but I relish the hot crepe in the chilled lettuce layered with its veggies. I like that Sao Bien makes it hot and crisp with good chunks of pork and shrimp topping all those fresh crunchy bean sprouts and soft yellow mung beans. Am I the only one to like the clean fresh taste of bean sprouts? |
