Strawberry Shortcake - Follow-Up, and Thanks!

The Safeway special is a very good deal - you may be pleasantly surprised. A friend brought Safeway's tres leche cake to a potluck and it was delicious.
tip: garnish each serving of the strawberry/white cake with a fresh mint sprig.... and blueberries?

Regional mexican dishes/restaurants in SF & Berkeley/Oakland

Yesterday's special at Los Yaquis was a braised pork shank in a deeply-flavored complex chili sauce accompanied with buttered rice, refried beans/cheese and delicious ethereal handmade tortillas in generous portions. We started with the yucca con chiciharon, fried crispy and served with a tomato cabbage curtido. My Caldo de Res was satisfyingly huge and hot - with ample leftover for today's lunch. The hot sauce is a hot perfection. The horchata is a favorite of ours, smooth and creamy with a hint of cinnamon and the Michelada will make your eyes sparkle with fireworks. Let's make a pact to work through the menu from top to bottom!
Service is warm and friendly. Parking is easy.

Schmendricks- Real bagels? Who in NY bakes on a cookie sheet?

lol, Robert - I could not wait until Saturday's bagels at The Window. That's why I found my way to Faye's this morning. I think I can make it to Friday for a warm just baked bagel.

New source for Louisiana cooking items

I've found tasso at Bryan's Meats at Laurel Village Shopping Center - but not recently. Give them a call at (415) 752-3430
or try Golden Gate Meat Company at the Ferry Building

Schmendricks- Real bagels? Who in NY bakes on a cookie sheet?

At Faye's this morning at 7:30 am - the Schmendricks bagels were indeed warm. Deliciously warm. I hope this is a regular delivery for Schmendricks.
One made it home, two were devoured in the car. $1 schmear of lox/cream cheese was enough for 3 bagels; one salt, two sesame. I like 'em warm, plain and unadulterated, too. It's a better bagel.
Arriving at 7:30 am is strategic - there is easy early morning parking on the street because cars leave for work!

Pink popcorn - Bay Area only?

I think the Stow Lake Boathouse concession stand in Golden Gate Park still sells the pink stuff. Does it?

The Joe's It's It version is better than the relocated Burlingame product of It's It fame from Playland.

Schmendricks- Real bagels? Who in NY bakes on a cookie sheet?

The long line yesterday at The Window on Mother's Day proves the truism "what the market will bear". Note that it's a friendly convivial group of like-minded souls, not a morning grump among them before the 10am opening.
I gave up bagels here when the only choice was soft and fluffy. Yesterday I enjoyed my Schmendricks bagels with unmitigated pleasure - like Tolkien's Gollum loving its Precious.
Life is short, enjoy what you may. Set the bar as high/low as you choose. lol, Robert - I won't be in line for a $5 bagel - I'll be eating my Bays English Muffins.
I once declared not to purchase any Chardonnay over $12 nor any Cab over $17 in the 1970's and discovered the enjoyments of other varietals. Time marches on with or without us. You've made your point, sugarfoot. I choose to 'love the one I'm with' and for now it's a Schmendricks' bagel, fickle as I might be.
How far will you go for a bagel? Saul's in Berkeley will have Schmendricks on Thursday, June 21.

Schmendricks- Real bagels? Who in NY bakes on a cookie sheet?

Actually it was 6 bagels per person on Mother's Day. Pre-orders go the head of the line for Pick-Up and received a flower w/card for Mom's Day with their orders at The Window. Back for more next Sunday, too. I'll be back, too - these are seriously good bagels with chew and snap.

Lyles Golden Syrup

Further north in Sonoma County, G&G Market has it at the Santa Rosa and Petaluma stores. In San Francisco, Fresh & Easy has it, too.

Root Beer -- housemade or good bottle selection??

How do you Romertopf?

To mend a cracked Romertopf clay pot with Elmer's two-part epoxy glue: Dry pot in hot oven and allow to cool. Apply the epoxy glue while still warm to the touch. Let it dry diamond-hard for a few hours in a warm oven at 100°F.

Root Beer -- housemade or good bottle selection??

Devil's Canyon root beer on tap at Kezar Pub at 770 Stanyan Street. I think a pint is under $5. not too sweetish. http://www.devilscanyonbrewery.com/category/root-beer/

Voluminous report from grayelf's spring 2012 trip to Bay Area

This is great food stylin' when it makes your taste buds dance and you want to go forth and chow as you read through it. :D
I'm taking notes.

Conference go-er at Moscone in need of pastry/baked good to bring back on flight

iconic San Francisco pastry or baked goods? This will be a curiosity to see what cream rises to the top - and travels well until the next day. We could rename it the Beyond Sourdough thread.
Near Moscone is Beard Papa with cream puffs but they do not travel at all - except hand to mouth. At the Ferry Building: Acme Bread and Cowgirl Creamery for bread and cheese. Miette Patisserie at the Ferry Building has macaroons or Bon Jour Patisserie at 655 Townsend (too far from Moscone Center). Morning Buns at Tartine - also too far from Moscone. Cupcakes are everywhere and not definitive. I can't remember an outstanding coffee cake near Moscone but there must be a hidden gem nearby for you to uncover!
Frankly, I'd take Liguria Bakery's focaccia from North Beach - also, too far from Moscone. Keep searching!

One night in Haight Ashbury - Magnolia Pub?

Walking from the Stanyan Park Hotel to Alembic and/or Magnolia is an 'easy' stroll.

One night in Haight Ashbury - Magnolia Pub?

Remember that neither Alembic nor Magnolia take reservations and time/day may find you on a wait list for a table.
BART to any station on Market Street, MUNI #71 to Haight St.
Perhaps BART & MUNI are for intrepid travelers, unless you are timid, aged, or have disabilities/travel with 100 lbs of baggage/pets/entourage?
Super Shuttle from SFO will take you to the door of where you stay for your one night.

We tasted sand dabs, black cod, and the petrale sole - all were top notch and the petrale sole was the fave of the table.
