Frida's Taqueria - Brentwood Country Mart - Opening Day

Sounds like a lot of money for what you got. How much are the tacos and sopes? It sounds as if you got 3 tacos and one sope, beans and rice and a coke. Maybe I got it wrong. Good report.

Fioretto Trattoria is better than ever

The trick is that the Latino waitress that had no experience and didn't speak or understand English has been there for 2 years and 3 months now and she is a total professional. She has become fluent in English and is very familiar with all of the food on the menu. She knows how to pace the meal and is really a pleasure to have as your server. This allows David to work his magic in the kitchen again. There are so many dishes on the menu that are true revelations to me. It is exciting because after all these years and meals all over the world, it is much harder to have mind blowing meals any more. They are also very happy to open your wine, for a modest ten dollar corkage. I have been there 4 times this month and each meal has been so perfect that I have left a 35 percent tip and still felt that I was the fortunate one.

Fioretto Trattoria is better than ever

This is truly the best and most authentic Italian restaurant in Los Angeles. I have been to them all. Chef David spends the extra time to make every dish to order. He learned to cook in Italy so that is the only way that he will allow the food to be prepared. The pasta in the Lasagna is fresh made. It is fabulous and unlike any lasagna that you have ever had. He tediously hand rolls the "pici" pasta for his Pici and Shrimp dish. You won't find this anywhere else. His homemade Mozzarella is the creamiest that you will ever taste. As a special on occasion he even makes fresh Burrata and serves it with Arugula and a Tomato Coulis finished with Basalmic Vinegar. His soups are excellent. We have tried Tomato Bread Soup, Lentil and Garbanzo soups. His Italian Bouillabaisse is spectacular. They charge a nominal $10.00 corkage fee. The waitress is top notch and keeps on top of everything. She is as hospitable as she is professional. One dish not to miss the the Fried Calamari. They are not the least bit oily, the squid is so tender and the coating is light as a feather. This is one of my favorite dishes so I have had it all over the country but this is by far the best. If you have a chance to get a dish with Risotto make sure to do it. It is tediously made to order and that makes all the difference. The location is in a hidden away mini-mall but don't let that discourage you. I am quite confident that this will be your next favorite place. Even if I lived far away I would still make the drive to experience food this good prepared by a highly skilled Italian Chef.

a few NOtes about fioretto trattoria

I am so happy that David got it together. If you notice the time span from the bad to the good reviews it is just under 2 years. I will have to go by and say hello. Ric Rios and I were probably his biggest fans. Many times that I was there, it was mostly chowhounds. It will be great to have him back again. You have to respect the fact that he pulled himself from the depth of poor food and service and finally achieved great food and service. I can't wait to try it again.

Mail order knishes???

I was recently in New York and went to Yona Shimmel. I ordered the Kasha Knish. The filling was tasteless and the shell was limp. I asked if they had gravy and was told only mustard and ketchup. I ate 2 bites, my wife ate 1 bite and we left. The owner asked if we wanted to take it with us and I said no. A real waste of time.

CAPRI in Venice

I agree. Years ago we really wanted to like Capri because we also live in the neighborhood. The food was average at best and the service was horrible. Maybe they have really turned it around for the better. Russkar's opinion is respected on this board and we have to believe his report regardless of all of our previous experiences. Has anyone else eaten there recently, our last meal there was many years ago.

Fioretto Trattoria - anyone been recently?

I can't believe he is still in business. Maybe he fixed the problems. He really is a great chef but a horrible business man. Maybe his wife took a more active interest in the restaurant and got it on track. No longer open for lunch on the weekends (when we used to go). I am thinking of giving it another try but am in no rush. Maybe you could "take one for the team" and go, then post your experience.

tacos baja ensenada methodology

Just about a block away is La China Poblana where they have the best Cemitas. I managed to eat a Cemita, 2 Fish Tacos at TBE and then go about 4 blocks away to King Taco and eat 1 Al Pastor Taco (meat stacked in front of the flame with a pineapple on top). Across from TBE is a Tamale place that sells Tamales Frio (you heat them yourself at home) for $9.00 a dozen and they are GOOD! What is the word for glutton in Spanish?

Caioti Pizza Cafe review

You told us that the crust was awful. What about it was awful? That you do not tell us. I love his crust, it is so much more complex than CPK. He was the original Pizza Chef at Spago and Nancy was the original Pastry Chef. They did not invent anything, they just collaborated with Wolfgang Puck to make excellent innovative food that tastes great. Ed LaDou is a genuinely nice guy. I have had many pies there but never tomato and cheese. His strength is in the special combinations of toppings and that wonderful sourdough crust.

Cocoa Nibs arrived

I read a recent thread about cocoa nibs and also read an older thread about a rustic chocolate bar that had cocoa nibs and crystaline sugar in it. Saturday my nibs arrived and I made my own version of this bar. It is amazing. About 80 percent nibs, 19 percent bittersweet chocolate and 1 percent crystaline sugar. It is a kick in the head of chocolate with a nutty, coffee-like complexity and that little bit of sugar crunch to take away some of the bite of the bitterish nibs. Who makes chocolate bar molds that are about 1/4" thick and the size of a Hershey Bar? I think I am onto something here. Sugarcraft only has bar molds for thicker bars with some sort of design on top. I wonder if it could be made into a ganache without losing its crunch over time. My Wasabi Pea ganache got limp and flabby after a week. Don't want to do that again.

Thanks

Tomato Paste in Tubes

You can buy Tomato Paste in jars at Middle Eastern markets for under $2.00 a bottle, it keeps for months and you get about 20 times as much as in the tubes. It tastes just as good too. I use it almost every day to enrich a sauce, make a sauce, thicken a sauce or improve a sauce. Amazing stuff.

Papri Chaat on the Westside?

They have it at Nawab on Wilshire Blvd. in Santa Monica. Cross street is about 19th. It looks so bad and tastes so good. I have been told that it is a traditional breakfast food in India.

Chocolatier- in Los Angeles

The best chocolates anywhere in America are Corniche Chocolates. Right now you need to be a guest on the Jimmy Kimmel Live show to even get a box. They are handmade small batch chocolates so production is very limited. No sugar, butter, cream or egg is used in the ganache. This gives an even more intense chocolate experience. The finest fruits and liquors from all over the world are used in the production. There is no store and you have to know someone to even get to try them. These are the chocolates that last year I found out about and was only told that they were made by the Mystery Chocolatier. Everything is hand made, hand dipped and hand decorated. Not fancy, just extraordinary. $3.00 a truffle from what I hear.

Which is the Best Persian resturant on the westside?

We live 2 blocks from Tajrish and we always leave with about 4 pounds of leftovers. The portions here are huge and the prices are really cheap. Best of all, the food is really good. Tahdig is not anywhere near as good as Darya but the stews are top notch. No one does Tahdig like Darya.

Need Culver City Recs: Sepulveda/Jefferson

Excellent inexpensive Indian restaurant in the shopping center at Overland and Jefferson. Average sushi place, decent sandwich and pizza place too. We always go to the Indian place for the $6.99 buffet. Open every day.

best bouillabaisse in LA discussion

Chez Mimi in Brentwood does my favorite version. They also serve it with toasts and rouille. It is a generous portion and can serve as a whole meal. $27.00 as I recall.

Super aged Gouda gone from Costco

You snooze, you lose. 2 of the 3 wines that I bought there last time, wines rated 90 points in the 12 dollar price range were also sold out. The third wine was still there, it was the best of the 3 by far. I think it isn't selling as well because of the twist top instead of a cork. You really have to stay on your toes. New favorite is a pure white Irish Farmhouse Cheddar. Really good but not in the same league as the Gouda.

Interesting thing I heard about super-aged Gouda

The crystals still might be considered "sugar" if you consider the various forms of sugar...glucose, fructose, sucrose, lactose. Or maybe I just have my chemistry all wrong.

living dangerously--just how expired can it be and still be edible?

Anyone who shops at the 99 Cent Only stores knows that many items can be safely consumed quite some time after the posted expiration date. I have been doing this almost daily for years with many of their products with no ill effects at all. Some items were well over a year expired. We bought them and consumed them over a period of months after purchase. I trust their judgement to make sure that what they sell is safe.

Fromageries

At the North End of Central Park just outside the park is an Antique Store that also sells fine cheeses, artisinal bread and I think some air dried meats. She keeps them in a huge refrigerator (cave) that is the perfect climate for cheese storage. It is cut/sliced and wrapped when you buy it. We bought some cheese, artisinal bread and meats and had a picnic on a bench in the park about a block from the shop. Is it legal to drink wine on a public street/park in NYC? I was just a tourist when I did this and wasn't sure of the laws. It would be good to know for my upcoming trip.

The food at Hop Li was tasteless and boring unless you ordered from the live tank and paid a fortune for your meal. Regular menu items were a total waste of time and money.

We were there once. Barely average at best. There is always a help wanted sign in the window for every position in the restaurant, including chef. That is never a good sign.

Super Aged Gouda found

Costco in Culver City, California has 3 year aged Gouda cheese that has the salty/crystaly aspect that someone was looking for on this board a couple of months ago. A big chunk was about $8.00. Really good price on 2 year aged Parm. Regg. too. They also have at least 3 red wines that scored at least 90 points and are about $12.00. I also got the biggest jar of julienne Sun Dried Tomatoes, at least the size of 5 Trader Joe jars for under $8.00. Quite a score. Too bad the purpose of my visit was for swim trunks and a sport coat, neither of which they had.
