4 days tacos + brisket tour report

one follow up on the rositas al pastor tacos. my husband got one taco that was fajitas meat. it had iceberg and tomatoes. no cheese but i do believe there were some refried beans. dont order it. just get the tacos al pastor. much better.

4 days tacos + brisket tour report

photos. ive never posted photos here. not sure how to annotate... ill just list as i see them here...

first two are rubys bbq

the kosher store closed sign

next four are el taco rico pics

next two are franklin bbq pics

one hamilton pool pic (not food, but i add it anyway. it was so empty!)

last three are of rositas al pastor

4 days tacos + brisket tour report

i must say, its only been three days but i already miss the tacos and bbq!

4 days tacos + brisket tour report

i guess im talking about the upper and lower decks of ih35... and i guess this was restricted only to the downtown area! it was kind of confusing, esp when using the gps.

4 days tacos + brisket tour report

got back, im still trying to catch up at home with various chores but i thought id drop in a quick note of thanks to everyone who has posted in the past, for i got all the recs from the chowhound board!

during our trip i somehow never got a chance to order any chilaquiles. ill just have to make them at home.

okay. so for the report...

we did go to rubys for lunch right off the bat. it was good: we ordered brisket and pork ribs. decent. definitely a place i would return if i knew i wanted to have some bbq but i didnt want to wait. and if it isnt too hot outside, i like the seating: its very breezy but well covered from the shade.

i liked the vinaigrette cole slaw very much. it was right up my alley.

we had our dinner at el taco rico and we loved it there. it is in a very quiet part of town, it had kind of a low-key sleepy sort of feel. there sure are a lot of stray dogs in that part of town; we saw four while eating our tacos.

we ate: al pastor, the beef fajitas, the chicharron, the barbacoa and our toddler had a beans and cheese.

all were good but we really really liked the barbacoa and the al pastor ones. all our tacos were with corn tortillas and the tortillas were excellent. pleasantly chewy. one layer held all meats, onion and cilantro well. two salsas provided were also good.

it was a great way to end our first night.

friday morning i dropped by sazon at 8:30 am but they werent open. i had to go to a playground to make it in time for franklins so i skipped bfast and fed my toddler a banana and yogurt that i had brought.

we went to the playscape at zilker (near the train). i had trouble finding it but got help from two strangers. the second lady walked me and my son there since she was jogging. so friendly! (and thank you jennifer, whereever you are!)

most excellent playground! charming sea theme with working (!) xylophone-type play instruments! nice large clean sandbox and infant swings. perfect way to kill an hour and a half.

got to franklins at exactly 10 am. there were 15 people ahead of us by this time.

they opened the doors promptly at 11. it did take a little while before we got to place our order (didnt notice when i did, though).

got a pound each of the brisket and pork ribs and a single serving of coleslaw and beans.

mmmmmm. mmmmmmmmm. i was just dying. i was so so hungry and the brisket was just divine. i saved just a tiniest bit of the brisket for hubby and ate one of his ribs. just wolfed the rest down. so tender. i also liked one of the sauces. it wasnt the vinegary one and it wasnt the coffee one. the middle one.

i REALLY regretted not getting a pint of the coleslaw. but otherwise it was so good. yall are so lucky to have this fine establishment in town!!!

drove home and put the rest of the meat in our fridge.

i took my boy to the nature center in a different part of zilker. another nice, low key place. i was astounded to see the preschool in the park. what a great place to have a preschool! im so jealous! my son liked seeing the coyote and the bobcat as well as the littler critters in the inside (snakes, mice, turtles, etc). a nice way to kill an hour or two.

dinner was not at whole foods. i took my toddler to the h-e-b to try to get a pastrami, but the kosher market was closed until saturday or sunday. i forgot. i have the sign on my camera, but the point is is that they were closed for a holiday. i was seriously bummed out about that. i really wanted a really good pastrami sandwich.

i was very impressed with the h-e-b, though. very very clean and very well stocked for a grocery!

saturday we went to the whole foods for bfast. tried their bfast tacos. bleargh. did not like it at all. the fillings were okay but the corn tortillas were vile. they are local tortillas but they werent treated right. all our tortillas were at once mushy and crumbly. we should have gotten flour, which is what everyone else was getting. but i dont usually like eating flour.

we got some overpriced prepared fruit and some salads for lunch. also got some green bean and okra chips. VERY tasty, those veggie chips.

drove to hamilton pool.

apparently we were very lucky because hamilton pool had been closed for a week because of high bacterial counts. it opened up the afternoon before. we breezed in at 11 am. there were, at most, 13 people during our stay there. very quiet. apparently, for a saturday, even in oct, this was pretty quiet, so i feel we really blessed. no obnoxious kids, plenty of space to spread out. all around relaxed vibe.

the advice to wear sneakers is excellent. the hike down to the pool is def not for flipflops. the edge of the pool and the pool itself is rocky and not at all friendly for bare feet. we swam in our sneakers since we didnt bring sandals. but the pool was fantastic. swam out to the covered area and felt the spring drip onto my face. wonderful.

a very beautiful spot.

i would highly recommend any locals to go there, but to go there on a weekday, if you can skip a day of work.

dropped by bee cave for a bathroom and coffee break at the bookstore there.

did you know there is a city hall and a library in the mall at bee cave?

i had no idea that any city did that.

we ate dinner rositas al pastor.

they give you free chips (it was okay. not terrible, but not great either) and salsa (pretty good, imo. has a nice pleasant kick, but not too hot).

we got a large horchata. the horchata is HUGE but it was just okay. not bad, but not great.

hubby ordered two taco combo: one taco al pastor and one fajita. it came with rice and beans. he said that between his two tacos, the al pastor was definitely superior. the al pastor came with the onions and cilantro but the other came with iceberg, tomatoes and cheese (i think. i have to refer to my photos later. but it definitely did not come with onions and cilantro). the rice on hubbys combo was really mediocre but the beans were excellent. it had a smoky flavor, so good. we ate all the beans up (the toddler really did not get his share because i ate so much of it -- yes, i am the kind of mom who steals from her baby).

i got the 3 tacos al pastor special. 3 tacos, thats it. generous amt of delicious al pastor and cilantro and onions. it was SO good. i would really recommend this to everyone, esp if you like al pastor and esp if you like corn tortillas.

sunday we didnt make time to go anywhere so we just ended up having breakfast at burger king. :-(

anything else? i read up about h-e-b central market and wished i could have had enough time to visit. i was bummed about that. and while i was in line at franklin bbq some guy said we had to go to gourdoughs, but i also could not find the time to go there.

hmm. oh i want to say that i have lived in three large metro areas dc, bay area and l.a., and the traffic in austin, reminds me of them. yall have a LOT of heavy traffic! i would be frustrated. the dual highway system thing is interesting. is this a texan thing or an austin thing? or maybe im really sheltered and it is quite common elsewhere in the states? we were only there for three days. not quite enough time to get used to it. do you like it?

but man, your mexican food is excellent, just even the little tiny taste we had was so, so, so good. and there is definitely some bbq happening in austin! i am so glad i stood in line with my baby for an hour. worth it!

thanks again for everybodys past postings as well as for the input to my query and the suggestions to go to zilker.

we had a FANTASTIC time in austin. what a nice city! and thank all austin chowhounds for being so helpful!

4 days: tacos + chilaquiles + brisket with a 2 yo; pls review the plan so far

we are set to go to zilkers.

i did read about the hike down to the pool. i read that it would be much easier if we did not wear flipflops, so everyone will be wearing sneakers that day. we dont have a stroller but i do still carry my child on my back when he gets cranky or tired. it wont be a problem even with the descending and climibing up back. we will only carry one backpack for the 3 of us for lunch provisions, no cooler of multiple six packs + ice. most of it will be whatever looks good at the whole foods the night before + 4 bottles of water.

i did read about the 75 car limit and we are prepared for the wait.

even if we dont go swimming i saw pics and it just looks like a nice place to look around. the weather forecast looks promising. we just want it to be dry. coolish is okay.

4 days: tacos + chilaquiles + brisket with a 2 yo; pls review the plan so far

ill keep jmueller in mind as i gauge my sons mood.

zilkers is it. we dont need too much. a train! an excellent playground! and given that its a new-to-us space, we should be more than happy for 1.5-2 hours. i was looking at google maps and saw that there were 8-10 parks all in the area between where ut / franklins / sazons was. thank you for narrowing it down.

im good about reporting back. have done so in the past, most recently with a trip a year ago to vancouver.

4 days: tacos + chilaquiles + brisket with a 2 yo; pls review the plan so far

thats great. the plan to stand in line at franklins is firm. toddler in tow and hopefully slightly worn out from running around before. and maybe we will go somewhere afterwards to run around some more.

4 days: tacos + chilaquiles + brisket with a 2 yo; pls review the plan so far

staying at candlewood in austin south; husband has to be at ut around 8:30 am and stays there all day friday.

im with a 2 year old toddler. id love to drive out to lexington or lockhart but i dont think i want to do it w a toddler cos i wont be able to fit in enough walking/playing time. he will just be stuck in the car seat and thats no fun for him. so great bbq is out. likewise, nicer places like fonda san miguel are out bc, well, right now i just dont want to deal with it and the toddler. maybe in a couple years.

from scanning the boards and taking into account my love of chilaquiles and tacos (esp good tortillas) and brisket here is something ive come up with:

THURSDAY fly in noonish
lunch rubys for brisket
checkin + nap for toddler
dinner la canaria stand: gorditas and tacos (corn tortillas from scratch)

FRIDAY
without husband all day
bfast at sazon for chilaquiles; then park/playground early morn.
lunch franklins bbq; queue up by 10am. 1/2# brisket, maybe some ribs.
depending on toddlers mood, pick up masa and tortilla chips from el milagro. or not.
go back to hotel for toddlers nap.
dinner whole foods. get picnic stuff for excursion to hamilton pool

SATURDAY
bfast la casita for chilaquiles
lunch picnic at hamilton pool
dinner rositas al pastor (tortillas from scratch). hopefully my son wont have a meltdown during dinner

SUNDAY
bfast will go to la fogata or el taco rico or la flor (for more tortillas from scratch) -- i believe these are also all stands and not brick and mortar places.
fly home

if hubby goes on strike and refuses mexican at any point, backups are:

naus enfield drug (burgers)
hopdoddy burger bar (i hear they have good root beer and i love trying out different rootbeers)
h-e-b kosher store for the hot pastrami. im actually regretting that i dont think i can find time to go there since i am really kind of craving a really good hot pastrami. ah well. maybe next time!

if you have an opinion about anything i wrote above, id love to hear it. never been to austin and im lookin forward to spending some time with my son and husband. and i hope that hamilton pool turns out to be a fun little excursion.

thanks again in advance!

-ps if you have kids or know your parks, do you have one to recommend for friday near ut?

thank you and looking back at what happened

hello,

i posted some time ago asking for help and got a lot of it! thank you all for the comments and suggestions. as a result of postings, i drastically changed my original plans (3 days of vancouver / victoria) and cut out victoria. im so glad i did. it was tiring just going through vancouver with everyone...

DAY ONE

driving up and arrival; at the border, the americans went through quickly. the korean nationals took 45 minutes with a full interview (get out of the car and walk into a room).

lunch at japadog and then check into hotel without incident.

japadag went well and ppl seemed to like the okonomi. none of us had the fries. some how we managed to find a table. the turnover is quick. hot dogs, duh! :-)

stanley park for the day. it was kind of overcast and a bit chilly but it was still pretty good. no hard rain and it was sunny enough for pictures.

dinner at santouka ramen. most ppl in the party were unhappy with this. comments included "no more japanese please" and "wheres the kimchi"? i was ticked off in particular by the kimchi comment... grrr. that being said, hubby and i loved it. i had shio chashu and hubby had the miso chashu. thick, creamy and oh so so so good. it hit the spot. i recommend going there if you like ramen!

DAY TWO (theme granville island)

breakfast at patisserie lebeau. we had a number of them including savory ham and cheese, but i absolutely adored the original liege. snacked on others savories but ordered another sweet one with apples and custard.

go to granville island and spend the day there. the weather was perfect. sunny and warm, but not too warm. sunny blue skies. it would have been perfect for the water park but the 7 yo was not into getting wet. he still enjoyed himself.

we took a quick ride on the aquabus as some of the relatives were kind of restless after walking around.

we found the sake maker door, but they werent open yet and then we never ended up going back. :-(

snacked a bit at the public market in granville. many tasty looking things!!! but also ended up eating lunch at go fish. PERFECT! salmon tacones. enough said! i think the others thought this was okay. but they werent thrilled.

we ended up having dinner on robson. it was a korean restaurant, but i dont remember the name. even though they had originally said that they didnt want korean in vancouver, it turns out that thats exactly what they craved. i dont remember the name. i looked online and i dont think it was apgujung or norboo, but im not sure. we were able to walk to our hotel and there was a starbuck on the way back. so maybe it was norboo or one right near it.

the food was okay. nothing to write home about and definitely not mindblowingly good. but i guess the relatives felt better after eating weird western food all day.

DAY THREE (richmond)

nobody wanted dimsum so breakfast was at red robin. it was my first time. everyone got biscuit breakfasts but i did the weird thing and ordered poutine. bad idea? how was it? it was as good as you would expect 9 am red robin poutine to be.

i felt a little sick having fries for breakfast but im nearly 40 yo and i am a professional eater. i held it in okay.

shopping and lunch at aberdeen centre. daiso was perfect. lunch not so much. we let everyone just pick what they wanted from the food court bc no one wanted to go outside to a proper restaurant. hubby and i split a bowl (champion) from chef hungs and even though ppl say its overpriced, we both LOVED it and it made us sorry that we didnt get a chance to try other restaurant versions of tbn. *sigh* only so many meals, so little time. it was our first and we will make it a point to look out for taiwanese beef noodles again.

most of the others got some weak food court udon because that is what looked most familiar to them. i tried to offer them samples of our tbn but no one was even game.

we had cream puffs. delicious. took the sting out of the udon i suppose...

we also got various tapioca / slush / tea drinks from a number of different vendors during our trip (including at aberdeen).

we stopped by lido and ordered milk tea and pineapple buns with butter for everyone. someone ordered one of the fried rice dishes but they were unhappy with it. it wasnt what they were expecting at all. i didnt have any, but it looked fine. i think this might have been a bit too exotic for the family.

i did want to add that hubby and i adored the hot milk tea and the buns. i would go back for those warm pineapple buns. if hk diners are up your alley this is a place NOT TO MISS. esp for a snack. i would love to go here for a proper meal as well if im with the right kind of company though

after this we ended up going home instead of having dinner at sea harbour bc nobody was enthusiastic about eating any more chinese food (except for hubby and me). :-(

way before i started planning the family trip, my mother in law suggested that we buy a package tour. everyone would ride a bus, there would be a guided tour all in korean and more than half the meals would be at korean restaurants. of course when we heard about this, hubby and i said "no way! we will plan a much better trip with much better food!"

now that we saw that everyone wasnt as thrilled with the food as i was, i see the wisdom in package tours. i dont know if all koreans are like this or if its just them, but next time (if there is one), i certainly wont volunteer to organize and if someone suggests a package tour, ill go along with that. better that everyones stomach is happy and have a good time, right?

we all had a great time in vancouver outside of the food. stanley park, granville and richmond are wonderful and everybody said that they wanted to come back, also to go back and see victoria.

i cannot wait to go back with my foodie friends though!!!!

Kingyo

how exactly does a crawl work? (ive never drinked either so ive never done a bar crawl)

you go to one izakaya, order two dishes (lets say theres two of you)? then go to another one down the street then order another two?

sounds very time consuming. if you do an izakaya crawl, what is the minimum time you need to schedule? 2 hours?

or maybe youre supposed to order stuff to go?

im very curious!

day 2: granville island day. banana leaf or seri malaysia or... ?

well, im rethinking this. its sounds like a lot of delicious fun to try out seri malaysia but maybe not at my relatives' expense...

im now thinking that it might be worthwhile to drive out to richmond bc im so partial to hong kong style diners...

day 3: richmond day. any hk diner recs for a quick tea?

oh my god, the chowtimes site is amazing! love the voice of the site! very strong opinions!

im going to look some more there.

and since js & lotus wrapper borth mention happy date, that will go on the short list.

thank you both so much!

day 2: granville island day. banana leaf or seri malaysia or... ?

i have a back up plan for this night too if dinner isnt a success!

mr pickwicks on denman! theyre open till 11 pm. a little fish and chips (or pickles) never hurt no one

day 3: richmond day. any hk diner recs for a quick tea?

day three, richmond

ive read some more and i am more and more excited about the richmond. we will def visit parker place mall (thank you florentine) after aberdeen. as for back up things to do, i read about richmond's wharf. may do that. may do richmond public market in addition to parker place mall. i think thats enough. we may just spend all our time at aberdeen too. its all just back up.

BUT i also saw that there are QUITE a number of hk cafes in richmond. even though this isnt really in the best interest of the party, what with a big dinner at sea harbor coming up, i might be able to convince them to have a cup of hk tea with me (will stay strong and not order any dishes).

i literally have not had a cup of hot super thick, creamy hk naai cha in over two years. i miss just popping in somewhere at 1 am and getting a cup with a pork chop rice.

like i said, ive seen/read about quite a few diners. if there is one that you all recommend over the others, and if it is near aberdeen centre and sea harbour, we will drop by your rec if my party is up for it. it must have convenient parking.

thanks so much in advance!

day 2: granville island day. banana leaf or seri malaysia or... ?

day two, granville day

we will DEF visit the sake maker. my hubby likes sake and that will certainly be a treat. thank you grey elf and moyenchow for the heads up.

dinner is still up in the air. i would love to visit peaceful but i think maybe we might try risking that when my hubby and i visit on our own.

am now considering taking the family either to banana leaf or to seri malaysia.

we are staying right next to the banana leaf on denman, so that has that going for it. but seri malaysia sounds like fun, even if there is no ambiance, plus its cheaper, which bil would probably like.

what do you all think? is it a toss up, or are the boards overwhelmingly in favor of one or the other? (oh and i _just_ tried calling seri malaysia for hours. machine picked up. bah. do you think they are open until 8 or 9 pm on weeknights? this is a friday night dinner.)

or maybe you have a better recommendation?

conditions: it shouldnt be expensive (but it doesnt have to be cheap) and it should be relatively near granville or near stanley park. should satisfy party of 4 adults, one grandma and one 7 yo.

indian food is out. korean is out. thank goodness chinese and japanese foods are okay. other foods we are possibly open to but i dont want to alienate the party either.

Taiwainese Beef Noodles: How to critique & where to go?

im sorry, i shouldnt have left js hanging! no one understands me. i dont care about ambiance. sometimes if its scary like hospital cafeteria scary, it ADDs charm (in my book). :-) life is short. sometimes you have to be open to eating places that dont have orchids in handblown glass.

Taiwainese Beef Noodles: How to critique & where to go?

"If Chef Hung's noodles are Journey, then Huaxi's noodles are the Dead Kennedys."

i may hijack my relatives and drag them to crystal mall

please help me narrow down choices for our 3 day, 2 night visit

thank you all for your further care...

im taking a little break from planning. burned out!

but with ~80% of the time planned for, i feel more at ease. tomorrow i will look more deeply into the comments and suggestions and try to fill in the gaps. i know that even with all this planning, something totally different may happen, but i still like to go with a solid plan in place.

i may ask more qs but i will DEF follow up with a report of our trip and what my relatives thought.

as for the meet up, i think i will have to decline, but i am thankful for it anyway. LOVE persian food!

please help me narrow down choices for our 3 day, 2 night visit

okay. so i have eight meals and theyll all be in and around the vancouver area. no victoria this time. ive spent several more hours reading and thinking and heres what i have:

DAY ONE (theme stanley park)

driving up and arrival

lunch at japadog and whatever else is nearby if its not enough

stanley park for the day

dinner at santouka or gyoza king

DAY TWO (theme granville island)

breakfast at patisserie lebeau. thank you greyelf for the suggestion. LIEGE! cant wait to eat waffles!

go to granville island and spend the day there. if the weathers great, all the better, the kid would probably enjoy the water park.

lunch at go fish

explore granville island area more. just relax. (or any further suggestions?)

coffee at thomas haas (or maybe save this for after dinner)

dinner at peaceful restaurant

DAY THREE (theme richmond)

breakfast dim sum at jade restaurant

shopping and lunch at aberdeen centre: anything i would be sorry to miss? im looking forward to daiso!

dinner sea harbour (earlyish), then schlepp back home...

again, if anyone would be kind enough to critique the itinerary, i will listen!

ill try to plan as best i can: ill call all places and try to make reservations (thanks lotusRapper!). i know that things happen and i am very open to plan bs. messed up parking, crying babies, weak knees. if we go to mcdonalds, thats what we do. its all really about the company and the journey...

thank you all again (esp greyelf!!!) for making me think a bit harder about how crazy it would have been to cram victoria into such a short stay.

reading some more, i found even more places. wish i had five stomachs so that i could stuff it with food from mr pickwicks, song huong, saravanaa bhavan, crystal mall etc etc etc

please help me narrow down choices for our 3 day, 2 night visit

hi everyone!

thanks so much for your help.

after reading your kind replies i started to realize that i wasnt really giving much thought to location, and the fact that we have a kid and a baby and a grandma to worry about.

i talked it over with my husband and we decided to cut out victoria. packing up, eating bfast, driving 30+ miles to get to the ferry terminal, waiting in line, then getting off and then finding lunch and trying not to make 6 other people starved or angry...

i am bummed about it bc i remember how lovely victoria was the last time i went (13 years ago). but i went alone and it was easy to just _go_ places.

(i am also bummed bc of all the hours i spent looking up restaurants and things to do in victoria.)

ugh. im redoing the schedule...

i hope i havent pissed anyone off. i really appreciate the tips and help!

i know i already said it, but im stressed about planning. after this trip, im not planning anything else for any other groups, esp for a place that im unfamiliar with.

i also wished that we had an extra day or two for this trip. that certainly would have helped.

ill write again with more questions.

thanks SO much again for your input. its really sobering!

oh and off topic, but in doing all this research, there are so so so many places i want to eat at in bc. vijs, all the guus, check out west coast poutine, hk diners (i have a soft spot for hk diners too, and im not sure i can indulge that on this trip). i think i need to convince my hubby that we need to spend two weeks on our own taking in vancouver + victoria (where we will enjoy white heather)...

please help me narrow down choices for our 3 day, 2 night visit

i also just noticed the dragon boat event... something to consider?

please help me narrow down choices for our 3 day, 2 night visit

oh, day one is thur, june 17. we will be back in seattle late sat night june 19

please help me narrow down choices for our 3 day, 2 night visit

hi there, a small party of us is going up to vancouver for three days, two nights.

there are four adults, one grandma with a bad knee, one 7 yo and one 6 month infant. almost everyone is from korea (2 adults and the baby are living in the u.s.).

this is a food forum, so id like input on our meal options, but if you have comments on the rest of the itinerary, comments are definitely welcome (its my first time planning for ppl other than me and my husband, and im kind of stressed out.)

our base is in seattle.

i dont know how all our relations are with respect to food choices. i dont want to weird them out (had a bad experience taking them out to indian) but i want to enjoy my meals too. bil is kind of on the cheap side, so ive also tried to choose more budget minded options. for a real foodie trip, ill have to come back without relations.

i keep wondering if ive overbooked us. will we be exhausted with this itinerary? ive also tried to stay kid focused for the 7 yo.

anyway, here is what ive come up with so far.

******************************
DAY ONE

breakfast somewhere in seattle (probably at bils home)

drive up to vancouver from seattle

lunch: crystal mall or
lunch: japadog

afternoon in stanley park OR
if its raining the aquarium, museum of anthropology

dinner at gyoza king, santouka, kingyo or shanghai river
(im really undecided about dinner obviously)

sleep at our hotel

******************************
DAY TWO

breakfast: dimsum or something else in vancouver?

take ferry to victoria

lunch: red fish, blue fish

butchart garden
if its raining royal bc museum and butterfly garden

tea at white heather

if we're not pooped out, beacon drive in for soft i.c.

dinner: hernandez
dinner: pink bicycle

sleep at our hotel

******************************
DAY THREE

breakfast at mole or
breakfast at shine cafe

take ferry back to vancouver

lunch: go fish

rest of afternoon in granville, kids only market

dinner: sea harbour or
dinner: empire chinese cuisine

drive back to seattle

night market in richmond? any in vancouver?

thank you both grey elf and lotus rapper!

i have a good foodie buddie in seattle. we will prob eventually go to both markets but on our own time without our international relations... (grammy from korea is also in this summers touring party)

thanks so much for helping us!

night market in richmond? any in vancouver?

we are still firming up our vancouver plans. is the market in vancouver plauged with empty stalls or a depressing location?

though there are a few adults, there is one 7 yo coming along. but hes from korea so the kid might be mightily unimpressed with the korean pancakes (hoddeok). i dont want him to be depressed either. maybe a better idea would be to just take him to a popular restaurant instead? we only have two nights so im trying to make it count... as it is, i guess i feel sort of unenthusiastic about either night market...

Moving to LA. Which neighborhood for a Hound?

sawtelle! 2 miles from westwood, surrounded by tjs, and whole foods. has japanese market, tons of japanese restaurants. rent not crazy, not too far from santa monica. can be 30 minutes to an hour depending on traffic to downtown l.a. though.

night market in richmond? any in vancouver?

hi,

just wanted to know if anybody actually went to the summer night market in richmond. i saw some article that said it was cancelled but their web site says that they opened several days ago. im trying to make some plans and wanted to know if it really exists or not and whether or not its worth going.

while we are at it, is there a night market in vancouver?

the web site for the richmond one is http://www.summernightmarket.com/

Edy's/Dryer's Peppermint Ice Cream (seasonal)

just curious but last year it was real ice cream? (i bought this peppermint whey this year. its okay by me.)

sundubu (soon tooboo) in chicago area?

tex888: thank you so much for this tip... as we will only have two days there we will def just go to chodang instead of sgd. but since we are also in central illinois permanently im sure we will eventually get the chance to go to sgd and compare.

we are originally from l.a. and now i realize just how spoiled we were by the convenience of socal.

thanks again for the tip!

ps do you also have tips for the following dishes:

kalguksu
naengmyeon (mul or bibim)
kalbi

would appreciate it much. the drive up is 2.5 hours and we just dont have the time to try places randomly since we only get the chance to go up only every now and then

also if you ever need recs for specific dishes in l.a. i have got them.
