Love to Eat's Profile

Affordable foodie restaurant (not chinese, mexican or street food) - for 6 mothers taking 20 something daughters

Lupa - great meal, something for young and mature.
Most entrees in $20s.
However, may need to be willing to take a 5:30 or 6p reservation there for a group of that size.
Then go for a walk and have dessert somewhere else in the neighborhood to make evening not end too early...

Rainbow Cookie Birthday Cake???

Did you ever find the cake? If so, how was it?
I want to order it...

Foodies dining with 7 year old plus need some recs

If you have a well behaved 7 year old who enjoys to eat, you can eat anywhere. We have been to many of the places you've mentioned with our kids from age 4 to 10, and never felt uncomfortable

Spending an entire day on the High Line- where should I get my three picnic meals?

La Bergamote croissants are great!

Afternoon Tea for a 9 year old girl

Depends on your 9yo.

Bemelman's at Carlyle is perfect for a dress-up, fancy tea - we took my daughter & her visiting friend for a "special" day; excellent food and good behavior expected. I imagine Plaza or Russian Tea Room tea experiences are similar, though the intimacy of the Carlyle room made it more special.

American Girl is a favorite birthday party place for my daughters' friends; the food is not good, and experience is cool with your American Girl doll.

Her favorite repeat tea place remains Alice's Tea Cup; it's go the perfect balance of more casual and comfortable than a "fancy" place, yet it's about the "tea" and food, rather than about the dolls and play.

Looking for lunch and afternoon tea spots

Bouchon in Time Warner at Columbus Circle is good for tea/coffee and people watching indoors, and not far from MOMA.

For lunch on UWS post-Wollman, consider Shake-Shack for good burgers (super casual).

christmas day breakfast

How about dim sum? Most things in Chinatown will be open, though may be extra-busy.

Pici pasta

Found it once dried in Italian store at Cheksea market. Also, very easy to make, just time consuming. Just pasta flour and water, then hand roll. Time consuming, but as good as Tuscany.

Sunday breakfast/brunch near CitiField?

Great sandwiches and quiches, as well.

CONSISTENT MANHATTAN RESTAURANTS FOR AN ANNIVERSARY

My views:
emp -> never been wowed by food, neither when it first opened nor a year ago; gorgeous space and atmosphere
gramercy tavern -> great food, service and room
modern, per se, babbo, -> never been
daniel, jean georges -> great spaces and meals, but too formal and too much food for me; prefer their "less formal" versions, i.e.e Cafe Boulud (see below) and Nougatine.

Cafe Boulud on UES - never had a bad meal there in 10+ years; the pastas are amazing, as is the loup de mer on the current menu; and the madelines that come with the coffee always end the meal on a perfect note.

Lupa in Village - relatively simple but awsome Italian meal, again never had a bad meal here.

Harrison in TriBeCa - been with many friends from all over the country and world, and everyone has found something they enjoyed.

The list of options is too long to hit everything in 4-5 days, so these are just a few personal favorites.

If you give your list, it will be easier for others to give their "yay "or "nay", as well as suggest comparative places.

Cafe Boulud review

Loved your review, especially as we haven't been for the summer menu this year yet.
This is one of my favorite NYC restaurants, especially when I want to stay on UES despite the older, more stuffy crowd. The pastas there are always amazing - better than most Italian places in NYC; my perfect meal there is a seafood appetizer + 1 or 2 appetizer portions of pastas + coffee and madelines. On the winter menu, the short rib dumplings and the seafood tagliatelli were my favorites - hope they return next year.

authentic japanese restaurants

I haven't been in over 2 years, but used to go evey month or two with the old chef. DH and I went several times when new chef started, and didn't like it as much. I can't say the quality necesarily changed, but we just found less on the menu that we enjoyed and less of the unusual seasonal items on the specials menu.

Interesting way to use honey?

Simply drizzled over greek yogurt.

What are your tried and true favorites from Epicurious.com

I also just make the tenderloin with glaze from the Island Pork Tenderloin Salad (but never made salad) , and for a bigger group make one tenderloin without the tabasco for kids/elders - always gets rave reviews, and has lifted my status as a cook to one as good as my brother, which is quite an honor in my family.

your best stuffed pepper or stuffed zucchini recipes....

A lighter version of stuffed peppers using primarily tomatoes - had a friend make them for us with in Italy with fresh farm produce and it was amazing - duplicated with summer tomotaoes here in NYC and still very good:

2 Red Peppers, halved lengthwise, deseeded and the stem left on
2 Yellow Peppers, halved lengthwise, deseeded and the stem left on
Sea Salt and Black Pepper
1 Clove garlic, peeled and sliced finely
24 Cherry Tomatoes, halved
3 Fresh Red Chillies, 2 sliced and one deseeded and finely chopped
2 Tablespoons Capers, soaked and drained
Handful olives, pitted
A Bunch Fresh Basil, leaves picked
2 Tablespoons red or white vinegar
Extra Virgin Olive oil
Optional: 8 Sliced Pancetta or Smoked Bacon
4 Slices Sourdough Bread

4 Balls Mozzarella Cheese, torn in half
2 Handfuls Arugula

1. Cut the peppers in half and put salt in them and place on a baking tray.
2. Mix the ingredients highlighted in red in a bowl and squeeze together with your hands (add chilli to taste)
3. Stuff the peppers tightly with the mixture make sure you put all the juice in too.
4. Put in the oven at for 20mins at 200 degrees C/ 400 degrees F (until you see the peppers getting soft)
5. Take it out and place strips of pancetta on the peppers
6. Put back in the oven for 10mins
7. Serve on the bread with a good mozzarella and the arugula on the side

Enjoy!

Top 10 Bakeries in the 5 Boros? [moved from What's My Craving?]

Is this the place?

I want to reiterate some of SweetFreak's & others' recommendations:
- Levain, Upper West Side - I prefer chocolate-chip cookie
- Patisserie Claude, West Village - also try the peach or pear square "tart", can't remember what it is actulally called
- Kee’s, Soho - creme brulee chocolate, but call ahead to reserve
- Little Red hen, UES - blackout cake

And add:
- Little Pie Company, Midtown west - warm slice of sour cream apple walnut pie a la mode
- Clinton St Bakery, LES - svaory scones, slice of cake, anything really (and don't need to wait in horrific line for a take out pastry)

Please do report back with your final schedule...

On a tight budget - Rome, Florence, Assisi, the Cinque Terre

Definitely hit Il Forno; my husband and I found it by chance on our first trip to Rome close to 10 years ago, but did not note the name. Went back 2 years ago with young kids in tow, and boy where we (and the kids) glad we found it again. Won't forget the name again!

Willamette Valley in June - what wineries should we visit?

Please tell us where you went, and what you'd recommend to someone going in August! Thanks in advance.

Seeking a few good recs for a mid-June trip (lots of details inside)

Skip Serendipity. Long wait, over-priced, and (other than the frozen hot chocolate) the food is not so good BUT they have a per person minimum forcing you to eat bad food to taste the one good thing on their menu.

Heritage of India (New Hyde Park)

Is this the Jackson Heights Nanking? Or is there another branch?

Cotton Candy

They have it in TriBeCa.

Lupa tonight - what to order ?

Pasta with pepper.
Cauliflower appetizer.
Everything!

Mangos! And Indian Mangos?

Got 12 Kesar for $32 at a smaller Indian store on Hillside Ave in Queens, it's right next to Usha's place. They are pricey but delicious. My 4 & 6yo went through 5 of them in 20 minutes. It's a few blocks east of Patel Bros, where I was headed but couldn't find parking.

Outdoor Bloody Mary

Not outdoors, but my favorite in the city is at Tamarind.

Where for Dinner with 3 Kids?

I still vote for Fuleen, but if Chinese is out I'd consider Pearl Oyster Bar for seafood lovers. No reservations, but if you get there early...
