Looking for rehearsal dinner suggestions

I know not everyone is fond of Mahony's but I had my rehearsal dinner there a year ago and our guests loved it. You can get the place for yourself, an open bar, a selection of po'boys, and they will also make stuff not always on the menu (jambalaya and gumbo). For our out of towners it was a great introduction to New Orleans food in a casual atmosphere. Call or stop during a nonbusy time and they can give you the details.

Oysters

Last Thursday we went to Luke and ordered a dozen raw oysters as an appetizer. When they brought them, the waiter said they gave us 15 because they were small. I asked him where they were from and he said "up north."

They were OK, and it was nice to get the extras. But it left me wondering whether they're not using local oysters because there aren't any available or because they're afraid of the perception that they're not safe. I'd be interested in others' recent experiences at other restaurants that serve raw oysters.

Suggestions needed for small rehearsal dinner in New Orleans

Mahony's would be perfect for this. They have a back area that's kind of secluded but not far from the bar.

Wondering about Delachaise. And Green Goddess.

We went to Green Goddess last weekend and enjoyed it. It's small and gets crowded but if you go on the early side you should be able to get a table.

Crescent Pie and Sausage

I have eaten here twice and both times it was excellent. The jambalaya is up there with the best I've encountered, and the pizza and the mixed grill were very good, too. It's a fun place to go with a group and taste a bunch of things. I'm wondering if anyone else has been?

Mahoney's Po-Boys on Magazine

I think their gumbo, only available on Friday, is one of the best in the city.

I bet the long wait was because that was not long after the New York Times' article on po-boys that prominently featured them. Never been there for lunch but at dinner I've never had more than a 5-minute wait to order and then the food comes 15-30 minutes later.

Mahoney's Po-Boys on Magazine

I'm also a big fan. A few weeks ago they knocked down the wall that divided the front from the back, which gives it a more open feeling.

We took some friends there a while ago and now they go once a week...

Great Oyster Dive in New Orleans?

If you're uptown, there's free oysters (and excellent solo piano) from about 7 to 9:30 at Le Bon Temps Roule (4801 Magazine). I had some last weekend, and even though they're not at peak form, they're still pretty good.

Restaurant advice for a local

Could try Eat (eatnola.com). Or maybe Mahony's on Magazine if you're willing to get out of the French Quarter.

Live Jazz or Blue Grass

The Tanglers are one local bluegrass band worth checking out: http://www.myspace.com/thetanglers

You can see live jazz and eat appetizers at Irvin Mayfield's place on Bourbon: http://www.sonesta.com/RoyalNewOrlean...

Rent a car?

I would vote for renting a car. Compared to many cities, parking in New Orleans is pretty easy (with the exception of the French Quarter, but even there you can usually find spots on Esplanade or nearby streets). In the long run, you'll save time and stress and probably see more of the city and get a better feel for it. Don't forget to check out the Oak St./S. Carrollton area, which has some good mid-priced restaurants.

Fire a Restaurant

From the header I thought this thread was asking us to nominate a restaurant we'd like to see "fired," a la Donald Trump.

Are raw oysters safe to eat in May?

Royal House at 441 Royal has an oyster bar ... relatively new place. Not sure how late they're open but you might give them a call. 528-2601

Good N.O. Restaurant with Bar Seating

On the lower end, you could check out some bars that serve good food, like Coop's Place and Yo Mama's.

Good "neighborhood" joint in Warehouse or Quarter?

I agree, I'd trade yo mama's for port of call. During jazzfest many places will be crowded so you might want to have have several backups in mind ... maybe coop's place and fiorello's on decatur, bennachin on royal

Cafe Atchafalaya-the good, the bad and the tasty

I noticed on the website that they have a new owner. Has anyone been since it changed hands?

>>In the last quarter of 2008 The cafe was purchased and is now owned by Tony Tocco who is the owner of the circle bar and the former owner of Snake and Jakes Christmas Club lounge. Rachel Jaffe has also recently come aboard and partnered with Tony.<<
