Milk in bags ... Are Canadians weird, or are Americans the weirdos?

Milk is not sold in bags everywhere in Canada. It is sold in bags and cartons in Ontario. In Manitoba, it is sold in cartons and 4L jugs. I can not speak for the other provinces as I have only lived in Manitoba and Ontario.

Is Winnipeg really a Wasteland? (moved from Canada board)

Ok, as a former Manitoba/close to Winnipegger, where is Michael P's and Colonel Willy's?

hollowing out an onion?

I did this and I used a mellon baller.

Food station ideas for wedding (moved from Ontario board)

I have seen beef tenderloin sliced thinly on thin slices of french bread-kind of a two bite deal, no utensils required.

I've seen mini gourmet sliders and mini pulled pork sanwhiches. Also mini beef wellingtons.

foods you ate as a kid (or young adult) that you wouldn't eat now?

That and macaroni and cheese loaf- gag!

Restaurant Recommendations for Winnipeg Canada

I have heard that Dubrovnik is well passed it's prime.

Amici has good food but the comment my parents made was that the decor looks tired and the place needed to be gutted.

I really enjoyed Oui Bistro in the exchange- french food and I loved the atmosphere.

I have heard really good things about 529 Wellington for Beef/continental fare.

People rave about Fusion Grill but my parents were really disappointed with it and hated the atmosphere there.

stinky recipes

Deep fry something- that usually stinks things up pretty good. Come to think of it, cook a curry and make deep fried pakoras- Then broil a piece of salmon and burn a bag of microwave popcorn. Durian for dessert.

Fake Japanese Food

Cool, but the prices are not so cool...

Ottawa with kids - restaurant recos?

A couple of places come to mind:

The Grand Pizzeria in the market

http://www.thegrandpizzeria.com/

There is a Milestones right next to Parlement Hill, I've found that their food is decent.

Darcy McGee's Pub on the corner of Sparks and Elgin

http://ottawa.darcymcgees.com/

There is a Richtree restaurant still in the Rideau Centre- not always the best food but kids seem to get a kick out of it.

For TexMex there is Lonestar in the market.

www.lonestartexasgrill.com/

If all else fails, there's Tucker's Marketplace in the Market as well.

Avoid Dunn's, Zaks Diner isn't so great anymore. The Fish Market is a tourist trap.

Effect of Marriage on Home Foods

I'm not married either but I know that my dad probably eats better due to my mom's influence of a more balanced meal. ie. salads, vegetables other than potatoes etc.

When she's away he usually grabs a big steak and has oven baked french fries or a twice baked potato (frozen) with it. If he were living alone, the only time he would have salad is when it is included with a restaurant meal.

My boyfriend eats much healthier now that he is living with me as I cook very balanced meals as well and also cook leaner proteins. He also eats less processed foods because I like to cook.

Indian grocery in Ottawa

The Mid East Food Centre on St Laurent is a big one- I think it's near Belfast st.

what snacks should I keep in my hotel fridge??

For me it would be diet coke, bottled water, cheese, olives, nuts, some sort of fruit and I'd go for the tuna too!

Then I'd have some crackers and pretzels outside the fridge to go with the above.

ISO: good cheap eats around the University of Ottawa

I've shopped all three farmers markets, and if you are looking for budget eats, Lansdowne is the most expensive of all three markets in Ottawa (Byward, Parkdale, Lansdowne). Speaking as a student on a budget, I went once, admired the products but left empty handed because I felt prices were too high or cheaper elsewhere.

$75 Cancellation Penalty for Vail Restaurant?

Here's my 2 cents.

I have heard that people will often book mulit different restaurants on the same night and then decide which one they'll go to and either not show or cancel last minute on the other.

Essentially they waste the restaurants time and others who want to book a reservation with full intentions of going.

If I make reservations, I mean business, so I don't imagine I'd have any reason to cancel.

A lot of people have no regard for the time of others- they think nothing of being late or not showing for a restaurant reservation. I have friends like this.

ISO: good cheap eats around the University of Ottawa

The outdoor vendorrs usually last until late fall and start early spring. They're pretty die hard but sadly, winter sets in and all the outdoor stuff is closed. There are still a lot of food shops and the Market building has all kinds of small food kiosques which I think are reasonably priced.

As for the larger restaurants in the market, they tend to be somewhat tourist traps.

Review:

It's run by Hare Krishnas but I hear the food is good and dirt cheap!

My friends love the Poutine at Father and Sons which is pretty cheap.

Quite a few Shwarma joints not that far.

Don't buy stuff from the cafeteria- huge rip off. Go to the PIVIK (store in the Student Union-everything (drinks etc) is much cheaper.

There are also two Tim Horton's on Campus but neither have sammies. Just the baked goods and coffee. One in the student union and one in the SITE building- Engineering.

The U is right downtown and therefore close to the Byward Market- good place to buy produce in the summer and fairly cheap.

Kids' menus at restaurants. Really? [From General Topics]

Fair enough, before Benihana was everywhere.
I live in Canada and I think there's only one in the country in Toronto.

Kids' menus at restaurants. Really? [From General Topics]

My mom let me choose where I wanted to go for a special dinner and I was excited to go to the teppenyaki restaurant at Japan at Epcot center . This was way before Benihana and mass markteting of Japanese cuisine. Epcot had much more interesting options I recall (mind you that was 25 yrs ago).

I remember that the food at Disneyworld was not great.

As for kids menus. As children we were always expected to eat where my father chose. These were higher end restaurants where kids menus did not exist. We usually found things we liked. As kids, we really liked unique dining experiences like Japanese, Chinese or Korean restaurants.

I agree with the depends on the family remark. My nephew will not touch vegetables and is extremely picky. His mother is the same. I tried feeding him carrot sticks and ranch dip and he wouldn't touch them. Fortunately when he stays with my brother, he gets some more exposure to different foods.

A week in Ottawa

Given that you're from Boston, I'd skip trying to find decent seafood in Ottawa. Whalebone Oyster house is a notable choice if you really want fish/seafood.

I haven't heard raves about any of the Japanese restaurants in Ottawa but Kiko just opened and I have heard several favorable reviews.

Bad service at Campanile -- what would you do?

Ideally, the sandwich should have never left the kitchen.

But, it did-

A good server will usually question when a significant portion of the dish is left by the customer. However, given that it was a child, they may not have picked up on this and assumed the child was full.

Servers can't read minds- I always tell people- if there is something wrong with your food, say something immediately. No need to be rude- a simple- are the sandwiches normally that dark? will usually clue most servers in that you are unhappy with how it is cooked. The staff will more than likely fix the problem as quickly as possible. I would expect another grilled cheese out in less than 10 mins. A server or manager would have the kitchen remake it "on the fly."

Eating it implies that it is to your liking.

Omelettes

Try using cream cheese or boursin for the cheese- nice change.

Time for 1 Dinner & 1 Lunch in Victoria (need help)

I sent my parents to Red Fish Blue Fish for lunch and L'ecole Brasserie for dinner. They were very impressed with both and are accustomed to eating fine food.

The only downside to RFBF was that you have picnic tables to sit on outside , so the weather has to cooperate.

Foods you refuse to eat as leftovers?

I used to live off popcorn when I was anorexic and yes you end up vitamin/protein/iron deficient.(plus numerous other things). Hopefully this person eats more than that.

Mine was the popcorn -diet coke diet.

Foods you refuse to eat as leftovers?

I agree with leftover french fries- they're terrible.

Caesar salad the next day is usually pretty gross- soggy croutons and garlicky, limp lettuce.

Day old calamari fritti is bad.

Vengeful Foods?

Cocktail weenies?

Oh, might I suggest buying some horseradish root and making sauce from scratch.
