Gaviolini blood orange sparking juice--UWS Is this available for sale anywhere on UWS? I've confirmed Agata + Valentina has it, but it's a little out of my way during the week. Thanks for any information. |

Making Fried Oysters at home (NYC)--How to Buy Oysters? This was very helpful everyone. I am wondering which fish shop I should get the container from, so I'll check a few in the neighborhood. I can only imagine the prices here in Manhattan. Thanks for the info! |

Making Fried Oysters at home (NYC)--How to Buy Oysters? Question: I'd like to make a batch of fried oysters at home. What type of Oyster available in NYC Markets would be best? Must I buy unshucked oysters and shuck at home? Or can I get a container of shucked oysters (doesn't seem as fresh to me, but I'm open to advice). I can season, coat and fry from there. I'm just unsure about the oyster buying process. Thanks for any advice. |

How long do you recommend and at what temperature? Thanks. Thinking of making my first cherry pie if I can find some fresh. |

We also tried El Tizoncito in MEX City last week and enjoyed it. Inexpensive prices and good service. |

I just came back from MEX City. We had great steak tacos at EL CALIFA. |

ISO Toblerone--Giant Chocolate Bar Hi--I know I've seen the giant (200g or 400g) Toblerone chocolate bars somewhere, but I just can't recall where in Manhattan. Was it Fairway? Trader Joe's? UWS would be ideal. Any one seen these out for the holidays?? Thanks. |

2010 9th avenue intl food festival I was there yesterday, and I actually think it is better this year than in recent past years. It is smaller, but there is more variety in food and vendors. We enjoyed great Caribbean food in particular. |

What to serve with Jerk Chicken a little onion & garlic powder and a bit of black pepper and salt as a base, then I rub in the desired amount of wet jerk marinade. |

ISO Hartsdale NY (Central Ave) Brunch Recommendations We had breakfast at City Limits. While I wouldn't call it cheap per se, it was not much more costly (maybe a $1 or 2 here and there) than a standard diner for breakfast--and the quality was in fact higher than a standard diner for the items we ordered. So, we were satisfied. My only complaints don't relate to the food. The parking was hectic and the service was minimal. The downstairs bathrooms could use much better ventilation. But, the breakfast food served our purposes and we were happy with our challah raisin french toast, whole wheat pancakes, fresh OJ, and very tasty corned beef hash. I am not sure what people expect to pay for that much food with a decent quality in a decent environment (dont have brunch in NYC is my suggestion, we pay a lot more for less here on a regular basis LOL). Based on the mob trying to park and eat there, I get the sense there really isn't much else anyway...Thanks for the suggestions. Not sure where we are going to eat next week for breakfast, doesn't look like many choices in the 'burbs. Starting to recall why I moved back to the city :) |

ISO Hartsdale NY (Central Ave) Brunch Recommendations City Limits sounds like what we're looking for--thanks for all of the suggestions. I'll have to map it to see how far from 200-300s S Central Ave. I am getting the sense that brunch has slim pickings :) |

ISO Hartsdale NY (Central Ave) Brunch Recommendations For the next 3 Saturdays I will taking a class in Hartsdale on Central Ave (I drive in with friend from NYC). Last we week, we left class starving so we hit a chain restaurant in total desperation for food at around noon. I am willing to travel 15 minutes drive in any direction of Central Ave in Hartsdale for a nice brunch spot with a good selection of breakfast/lunch staples. Please rescue us for the chains that dot Central Ave. Any ideas? Thanks! |

Buying Short Ribs in Manhattan Ottomanelli's in the village has generally excellent meat. Fairway is OK. If you get out of the city, check out Stew Leonard's for above average supermarket meat. I often get excellent meat from my local Jubilee Market believe it or not. |
|
|
This issue that I have wth Costco is where do you store all those larger than average packages of stuff in a NYC apartment? We occasioanally shop there with someone who has a memebership and when we get home, the apt looks like a warehouse, which I don't like. So, while I shop there a couple of times a year, I dont see the point in buying a membership as a NYC apt dweller. |

Try: Fairway or Zabar's for good pricing. |

Agree--L'Absinthe has been on my short list since I saw it several months back on Colemco's PBS show. I may just hit it this week coming--though, I have read such mixed reviews. |

To close this thread out, thanks for all the suggestions, they were all appreciated. We went to GASCOGNE last night. The ambiance was what my friend loves. Small, intimate, candle lit. The service was very nice--sweet at times in fact. The garden looks ideal for spring, summer brunch. The food was a solid good. Its not earth shattering, no new ground covered--not to be expected at a bistro anyway. But averagely prepared hearty french bistro food, which was fine for us. The bill was 100, pre tip. I had the potato goat chess appetizer ($12) and 5 bone rack of lamb ($26), and a kir. All was fine and tast, but again not ethereal (wasn't expecting it to be at these prices either). I will return and perhaps try the crepes suzette which is made table side and with great flourish by the waitstaff. Thanks again to all. We are going to another place next week, I will consult these recommendations accordingly! |

Thought about both of those--only hesitiation is location. Kinda out of the way for an after work dinner for me. Both have been on my want-to-go-soon list forever though. |

Daniel, while wonderful, is a bit over the top for our purposes :) |

Took her to Cafe Boulud already--she liked it. I didn't think of Ouest. Is true French or merely french named? I've only been there for drinks and that was eons ago. An UWS side location would be ideal for me! |

Yes, I like the sound of Gascogne--it will make the list! Thanks to all for the great suggestions! |

I ate at Chez Napoleon years about 7 yrs ago on a no so great date and the food was OK; but, then again, my lackluster date may be clouding my memory :) |

Le Veau d'Or was a place on mind, but I could not recall the name. I think it was featured on Anthony Bourdain's show, maybe?? This is the type of place my friend seems to like, but honestly I had the same concern as Chez Nap. I will add this place to my list--thanks for the reminder. |

I have friend visiting who is a real Francophile wannabe. She dreams of living in Paris someday (never most likely) etc. Anyway, I agreed to take her to 2 french restaurants in NYC over the next week or so. In the past we've been to Petite Auberge, Nice Matin, Pastis, Alouette and several other places that were such duds that I can't even recall their names at the moment. She really like Petite Auberge as it had a "Rive Droit" vibe--well sort of I guess. She liked Alouette too. Anyway, I am not sure were to take her now. I was thinking Chez Napoleon--but I have some reservations (may be past prime??), or maybe http://www.laboitenyc.com/ (reviews are so mixed), or maybe Chez Lucienne in Harlem? Any thoughts on these? Any better ideas? Thanks for any guidance. |

Old Fashioned Blister Peanuts UNSALTED--Trader Joe's Trader Joe's has discontinued Old Fashioned Blister Peanuts (UNSALTED red bag). Does anyone know of a store in Manhattan that sells a similar product? The BF insists these are the only peanuts he can eat that dont bother his stomach after. It MUST be UNSALTED. Thanks for any leads. |

Oat Flour Muffins--why so gummy? Thanks! |

I'm so glad you posted this. Many people on this board write off the entire neighborhood foodwise. There's good food here, if you know where to look. |

Oat Flour Muffins--why so gummy? Hi HLing--From all that oat baking, do you have any cookie, cake or muffin recipe to share? I want to use up all this oat flour. Thanks! |

Oat Flour Muffins--why so gummy? I guess this is the recipe you mentioned? It does sound yummy, and I want to try it. But I need to use up a bag of oat flour and whole rolled oats! |
