La Lengua Chronicles - My Project for 2012 [San Francisco]

Hey Dave-
A few notes: Irma only opens Pastores whenever she damn well feels like it so it can be tough to get in. Go on a hungover weekend and get the chilaquiles.
One or two of the joints are clearly fronts (I won't slander here... you'll figure it out).
El Paisa is/was cash only but crazy inexpensive. Get the huge hunks of carnitas!

If you want company gimmie a holler :) spicedish at gmail

Pac Heights Recommendations?

Thanks guys. I was leaning towards hitting Japan town so these are great.

Pac Heights Recommendations?

Thanks Robert-- I had checked out that post. Been to several of those already... hopefully looking for something new. Thanks again though.

Pac Heights Recommendations?

I'm heading to the Queen Anne for a little 'in-town' getaway next weekend and I'm looking for a great little spot close to it for dinner. Other than Quince ... any great little 'gem' I should try?

Richmond: Santo salchicha Mexicano … or holy hot dog, Mexican-style

I was lucky enough to catch the bacon dog cart while scooping up a drunk friend at Delirium last Friday (seemed to be a father/son operation-- very charming gentlemen). I've also seen more than one cart out on Saturdays along Valencia in the 20's.

Lamb Virgin

The American Lamb Board? Who knew?! I'm loving the lemon zest and thyme suggestion. As for the grilling... I wish I could but I live in a wee apartment in the middle of the city... hence... no grill. The stews/khorma sound great! I think I'm going to try something more traditional for easter though. I will definitely let you all know how it goes!

Lamb Virgin

Leg of lamb check!!! Thanks so much for all the help... I have no idea why I'm freaking out over this... it's just another protein right? One other thing.... I have a guest coming over who's allergic to rosemary (who knew?!) so that's not an option. Would thyme work? Or should I go with something else all together?

Lamb Virgin

Hey all-
I've never made lamb before in my life but I've agreed to give it a whack for Easter. Any fool proof recipes out there that would be good for about 6-8 people?

Thanks!!!

Traditional New Year's Dessert?

I've been charged with bring dessert to a New Year's feast. IS there such a thing as a traditional New Year's dessert? Any suggestions? Mexican/Italian/English?

Thanks!
Erin

Perfect Gift Cookbook? [moved from General Chowhounding Topics]

I collect cookbooks, I've got a ton see: http://spicedish.typepad.com/spice_di...

But most are vintage and not super helpful to anyone just learning to cook. I have a friend who it trying to teach himself to cook. He knows how to boil water and broil a steak so he's not a complete beginner... but I want to get him one book that will teach him the basics and just a little bit more. Any suggestions?

Best storebought gingersnap cookie? (moved from Home Cooking board)

The TJ's triple ginger are great (I crumble them and put them in homemade ginger ice cream) they also have a great gluten free ginger snap that is a little more mellow and works great for crusts.

Ramen Recommendations in San Fran?

Definitely trust Melanie W. she knows of what she speaks! Also I don't know if she's listed it but Warakabune on Church & 15th has good ramen. It's a sushi boat place that is fairly inexpensive. They've got several types of udon and several ramens. Beware though... the spicy one... is nose burning.

College Exams Gift Basket needed ASAP

Diane-
When I had friends at Brandeis and they wanted treats... they ALWAYS requested Dunkin' Donuts gift cards. Especially during Chanukah. It was all about the jelly donuts!

You've all been so great with suggestions! I think I've decided that chicken with apricots and almonds might be the way to go. Daisy... your encouragement is so sweet thank you!

Hannukah Help!

Hey Daisy. I was leaning towards chicken but roast chicken is something I do all the time. I was figuring that I should do something more 'festive.' I guess most of this comes from the fact that I'm not Jewish! I guess I feel like I have to impress the family and friends that are.

What do you eat when you are home alone? [moved from Home Cooking]

Since I cook every other night, on those I'm alone... it tends to come down to grazing at whatever's left in the fridge or the back of the pantry. I've actually come up with some great accidental recipes this way though!

Your best Pumpkin Spice Cake recipe

I make a Pumpkin Spice Muffin/Cupcake that really turns out well! These would be great with a cream cheese frosting instead of sugar crust. Mmmmmm

Hannukah Help!

Only days until it's Hannukah time! I'm good to go on the latke's but I could really use some help with a non-brisket main-dish. We have a few non-red meat eaters making their way over for drunken dreidle and I'd love to have something for them too. Any suggestions?

Where to find a cook's cap?

Economy Restaurant Supply in SOMA (415) 626-5611 has some chef gear. I've picked up a coat there and noticed that they have some other pieces too. Worth a shot. They have a website where you can order I believe.

Before There Was EVOO ...
