Best Jewish Deli in Chicago?
Manny's is a joke. Terrible pastrami. At least you do get quantity, but at a hefty price. Ada's is not much better. Max's is OK, sort of. The Bagel is probably the best around. But for truly great pastrami, home made breads, smoked fish, etc, the best deli in Chicago is called Zingerman's. It's in a far eastern suburb - about four hour east, but worth the drive.
Grayslake-ANY good restaurants?
Bakes is surprisingly good for a sports bar. The biggest surprise was the mussels! Lovely Thai is also unexpectedly good. And, of course, Cafe Pyrennes moved to Libertyville some time ago.
Going to Perennial and Mercat next week. Suggestions?
At Mercat, the beef short-ribs are wonderful. Also the scallops, and the stuffed dates. Skip the shrimp in garlic oil.
Good Sushi near Hilton on South Michigan Ave??
I second Oysy. I also like Cool Sushi - Hot Woks five or six blocks north on Michigan Avenue. Also Shikago on LaSalle. And Osaka Express (a small moslty take-out or stand-up place) at the corner of Michigan and VanBuren.
Trying to Remember the Name of a Restaurant--Northern Suburb
Possibly Norton's (as in Norton motorcycles - lots of pictures on the wall) in Highland Park - great burgers.
Thoughts on The Gage
If you go to Gage, be sure to order one of the potato sides - my fav is with brie. And take advantage of the fine ales!
Recs needed for Provo, Utah
Four Seasons Hotpot and Dumpling House has the finest steamed dumplings I've ever had - I live in Chicago and have enjoyed great dim sum on both coasts.
Rehearsal Dinner in Victoria
The wedding party group will be quite small - just eight, including two vegans.
Rehearsal Dinner in Victoria
Our son is getting married this summer at Sooke Harbor. We're looking for a great place for the rehearsal dinner. Vista 18 looks like it has great ambience and a great menu. How's the food? Some of our group are vegans and the Vista 18 menu looked like it would work for them as well. Other recs?
Dining recs for Deerfield/Highland Park
Besides Walker Brothers, my two favorite spots for breakfast are Kevin's in Deerfield (used to be Cherry Pit) and Buon Giorno in Winnetka. I'd also agree with other recs on Michael - blew us away, but a little high for your budget. Froggy's is always a great value. One of the best burgers in Chicagoland is at Norton's in downtown Highland Park. Ribs (pork - skip the beef ribs) at Claim Jumper are terrific.
Burgers and Merkt's cheese?
What are some places with good hamburgers available with Merkt's cheese? My son is coming in from DC and swears that's what he wants!

Best Pastrami - Ever!
I tried Romanian Kosher Sausage pastrami today (both their regular pastrami and their Romanian pastrami - regular was much better). Their pastrami is certainly spiced more strongly than Zingerman's (Nimans), especially with pepper. But it isn't nearly as smokey (I could really not detect any smoke flavor). And their meat is not nearly the same quality as Zingerman's. Niman's claims their meat is prime, and I believe it. The pastrami from Romanian doesn't strike me as being even choice, which means the Romanian is very lean and dry - for me the taste and juiciness of pastrami is in the fat, and there's nearly none in the Romanian. Natually, that means the Niman's pastrami is also much more tender.
