Tom Wilson Oranges Are Back!

For all you fans of Tom Wilson oranges…they're back! Andronicos just got them in and they're priced at $1.69 lb. on sale from $1.99 lb. I didn't see any bagged like last year, only individual oranges and they're a good size and sweet.

Looking for one sugar-free dessert item [San Francisco]

Why not make a Paleo dessert. An easy one is take a banana break it into two inch pieces and freeze. Once frozen put in the blender until creamy and refreeze. Remove from the freezer as you would ice cream to soften before serving. You could put chopped nuts on top and or fresh berries. Your pie eating guests will probably want some so make plenty!

Birthday dinner 6/8, looking for the best ever fried chicken

I second Bull Valley Roadhouse...pretty noisy, but the drive and location is awesome and the building is very cool. The service and food are really good as are the cocktails!

Also recommend Wayfare Tavern in SF.

Chilaquiles - SF Dish of the Month (Feb 2013)

I had the chilaquiles at El Molino Central today and while I enjoyed the flavor of the dish, it was difficult to stomach the price...$10.50! Add a cup of Blue Bottle coffee, tax and a modest buck in the tip jar and we're talking $15.00!

My introduction to chilaquiles was in Mexico, many years ago and the fried tortilla strips were almost always mixed together with the scrambled eggs. The tortilla pieces were a combination of soft and crunchy. Once I mixed El Molino's creation together, it came pretty close.

Authentic Mexican Food in Puerto Vallarta?

I'll be traveling to PV next month and I haven't been for some years. I really don't want to be eating in tourist joints or high priced fusion something or other, I live in San Francisco and I can get that any day of the week. I have fond memories of authentic mexican restaurants/street food vendors fixing outrageously delicious simple mexican food. Can anyone recommend any places frequented by locals where you feel that you're eating in someone's kitchen and the food is typically Mexican? I particularly love sopas, chiliquiles and fish tacos. Not afraid to travel off the beaten path. Thanks!

What to have at Wayfare Tavern (other than the fried chicken) [SF]

I've been there a number of times, but a couple of weeks ago for the first time I had the burger which was really good. The deviled eggs are always nice and the butter lettuce salad was a wonderful simple preparation, but oh, so good thanks to the green goddess dressing! Their poutine was mentioned in the Chronicle a few days ago.

Dungeness Crab Prices 2012

I ended up buying 4 crab at Alioto/Lazio for the night before Thanksgiving. $6lb. cooked, cracked, cleaned. These crab were a little over 2lbs. each, were fresh and so flavorful. There's even free parking to boot in front of the building. There's nothing like buying your crab straight from the boat at the wharf. You can see the boats through their large overhead door where they bring them in and put them into the tanks.

Dungeness Crab Prices 2012

Andronicos in SF has crab at $7.99/lb. OUCH! Any less expensive sightings in SF besides the gougers at Andronicos and the fairly resonable Alioto-Lazio @ $5.25/lb.?

Pink Lady Apples in SF?

I have a recipe for an apple pie that calls for Pink Lady apples. Has anyone seen Pink Lady apples in SF markets recently? Thanks!

Where to buy a wok in SF, Daly City, or nearby

I second the Wok Shop. Extremely knowledgeable staff and a great selection to choose from, worth the hassle of getting to/parking in Chinatown.

Seeded Watermelons

Just bought one today and tried it...deliciously sweet! The produce manager said they will carry the seeded all summer through Labor Day. Thanks again Ruth!

Seeded Watermelons

I used to buy these fantastic seeded watermelons at the Serramonte Farmers Market sold by Van Groningen & Sons.Seeded melons are supposedly sweeter than seedless. They stopped selling at the market several years ago and I'm finding it difficult to find seeded watermelons in SF. Does anyone know where to get them in SF or nearby? I know Van Groningen sells to Foodmax, but I think the nearest one is San Leandro.

Favorite Cakes in the Bay Area

I'm a huge fan of SusieCakes. I first experienced their Red Velvet Cake in Newport Beach in June 2009. I begged them to open a place in SF, even wrote an email to Susan the owner. Thankfully they're here, but not too close to where I live. I know some find their cakes too sweet, but they hit the right note for me, classic, retro cakes.

Recommendation for in or around The Cannery

Going to an event at the Cannery next week and looking for reliable restaurant for dinner. Mid-price range, nothing too pricey(Gary Danko), but not a order at the counter kind of place either. My date is pescatarian (eats fish), me, I'll eat most anything. We'd like to walk rather than drive from the Cannery. Anyone been to the Blue Mermaid? Thanks!

Where do I find cake flour in (western) San Francisco?

Andronicos should have it, but just in case there's always Whole Foods on Stanyan near UCSF. They may have it in bulk and or box.

Crabmeat...Best price & where to buy in SF?

I found crabmeat at Andronicos in SF on sale for $26.99 lb. Not as cheap as Costco, but it saves me from having to face the insanity of that place.

And Al, I understand your point, but people who do that for a living are all set up for the production aspect and can do it faster than me. No comparison there.

Orson closed, makeover in progress

I agree Scott. I think her heart and head aren't into it anymore. Why would a celebrity chef run an event space, it doesn't make sense. She's just trying to make some money during the holiday season and believe me, once the New Year's party is over, the doors close for good.
