Saturday Brunch
I like Taverna. It gets really crowded though because of $1 bloody marys and mimosas, so make reservations.
Prime Rib in Austin
If I want to have prime rib for dinner in Austin (or surrounding area), where should I go? Who do you think serves good prime rib here?
Tony Bourdain is coming to Austin: Where should his handlers send him?
Except Bourdain will have nothing to do with Food Network. He pretty much hates them. His show is on the Travel Channel.
Restaurant Week in Austin
I went to Green Pastures last night. It was so good! My BF got the lobster tail for the appetizer and it was bigger than I thought it would be. I had the soup, sandwich, and snack appetizer with the brie grilled cheese sandwhich. I think that sandwich was the best thing I've ever eaten - seriously.
I'm going highly recommend Green Pastures this year because I thought at $25 it was a heck of deal.
Need A rec. for South Austin
For further south Cypress Grill is a cajun place in the Golds Gym shopping center at William Cannon and Mopac. It's a bit expensive for what you get, but the food is really good. I give a big recommendation to Azul Tequila in the Target shopping center at Ben White and Lamar. Low on atmosphere, very high on quality interior mexican food.
Best Salsa in Austin
I ate at Reds Porch recently. We got chips and salsa as an appetizer. The salsa was really good. It was very thick and very tasty. My hands down favorite though is the salsa Central Market serves with their breakfast tacos. It's very garlicky and oh so good.
Food Recommendations: staying at 35 and 183
I second Shanghai on Middle Fiskville Road. If you are here over the weekend they are a great place for Dim Sum.
Habana Review
I love the Habana on South Congress. I haven't had a bad meal there. It's rarely crowded and easy to park. The best thing is the fried potato ball, I'm not sure what it is called. It's meat surrounded by cheesy mashed potatoes then fried. Delicious. I don't know what everything is called, but I love the roasted pork and the stewed chicken.
Austin Restaurant Week
I went to Mansion at Judges Hill last night. I got a cesear salad, prime rib, and pecan/coconut cake. The salad and cake were fantastic but I was disappointed in the prime rib. It was over cooked and I had to saw through it, not something I want to do with prime rib. However, everyone in the place was getting the prime rib, so maybe with serving so much and for a cheaper price, I got the bad piece. My BF got the chicken sambuca and he really liked it. Overall it was good, but I'd never get beef there again.
ways to make yellow squash interesting (without cheese)
I completely forgot - my mom also used to deep fry them. Peeled, sliced into rounds, dipped in flour, then fried in oil. I didn't want to try them until my dad told me it was a cookie, then I tried it and loved it. I don't remember how old I was.
ways to make yellow squash interesting (without cheese)
I make a soup out of them. I boil potatoes, onions, and the squash together (cut into hunks first). Drain most of the liquid off, salt and pepper, and then blend it with the emersion blender. You can make it as chunky or smooth as you like. I usually put butter and cheese in mine, but of course, not necessary. It's just as good cold as it is hot. I see all the other posts with garlic added and that sounds great. I think I'll add some roasted garlic next time.
√ Hatch Chiles
I got the Hatch Chile version of CM's pimento cheese and I thought it was hot. But, it was so good!
Best Guacamole in Austin
I love that CM guac, it is so good. My favorite though is at Azul Tequila. I think about it all the time.
Raspberry Vinaigrette ~ other uses besides salad dressing?
Lots of dieters put it over a baked potato instead of butter/sour cream/etc. It's not bad.
New to Round Rock
I had breakfast on Sunday at the Juarez Mexican Bakery. It's in the same strip as Gino's on S Mays. The breakfast tacos were really good. I didn't get a pastry, but they looked fabulous. For sushi we always go to Oragami. For general American style Chinese, we really like Happy Dragon in the HEB strip on the toll road. The lunch specials are well priced.
road trip--Austin to Corpus
I went to Corpus last week and Snoopy's was our last meal. Oh so good! The fried oysters were divine! I wish I had ordered a plate of just those. Be ready for a long wait and it's cash only, but it's worth it.
In Port A we ate at Trout Street Bar & Grill. I had a shrimp pasta and the shrimp was so flavorful and wonderful. The place was a bit expensive, but I thought it was good.
pizzeria corvina in round rock
My BF and I ate here last night. I was pleased overall. We started with the capreze salad. I thought it was very bland. But, the entrees were a completely different story. I had the Bianca Funghi, pizza with lots of cheeses, mushrooms, onions, and spinach. BF had the seafood linguini with marinara. Both were really good. The marinara wasn't spicy, but I thought it had a great flavor. I'd definetly go back.
Bee Cave Restaraunts
I've eaten at The Grove several times and have never had a bad meal there. Great wine options too.
Mighty Fine Burgers - Arbor Walk
I love this place and it may be because it's not grilled. I am not a fan of grilled taste to my food. My burgers are always juicy and I think they taste great. It's too expensive, yes, but when I want a good burger, it's top of my list.
Southern desserts you can't live without
I made a Lemon Chess Pie for my Cali born boyfriend last week (he had never had one). I was going through my hometown cookbook (the ones where everyone in town sends in their recipes) and all of the Lemon Chess recipies (there were four) had cornmeal except one -a recipie that was supposedly Lady Bird Johnson's. I'm allergic to corn so I made that one. It was very tasty. The mouth feel wasn't exactly right, but it was a damn fine pie.
Made it to Austin! Need to revamp my list!
For TexMex and drinks, my recomendation is Trudy's. The food is always good and the Mexican Martinis are.. well, they limit you to two.
Spiraling Toward Valentines Night
I've eaten there and the food was good. I took my mom for a special dinner and she had the beef stroganoff. It's prepared tableside and was to die for. I had a pasta dish that was fine, but not as good as hers. We also got bananas foster for dessert and it's flambed tableside. Tableside preparation and flambe is not an experience you get very often, so for me it was a special occasion type of place.
Help: V-Day Dessert for Two
You could make hand rolled truffles. You can make a small amount of ganache (chocolate and cream), put it in the fridge to set up, roll into balls and roll in nuts or cocoa powder. Once you figure out the ratio of chocolate to cream you could make as little or as much as you want.
How do you use white truffle oil?
I put it over risotto but I've heard it's fabulous over popcorn.
Hudson's on the Bend
I ate there a few months ago. I really liked it. I had the Elk Wellington. It was heavy, but so so good.
[AUS] Good DimSum in Austin Area.
I went to Shanghai last week and thought it was really good. Way better than Tien Hong. We got there around 11:30 on Sunday and it was busy, but we only waited 15-20 minutes. By the time we got out, there was a huge crowd. I'd definately go back, everything I had was great.
"Dirty" recipes that are crowd pleasers
Sausage Balls! I recently made these for my office and they went nuts for them.
1lb breakfast sausage
10 oz sharp cheddar
3 cups bisquick
Roll ingredients into balls and bake on a cookie sheet at 350 for apprx 20 min. Serve hot or room temp. They disappear fast.
What dishes are improved by truffle oil?
I have heard that if you put it on popcorn, you'll never use butter again. I haven't tried that yet, but last week I made some cheesy risotto and dressed it with the oil. It was yummy!
Thanksgiving:Who Ate What and Where?
I ate the Shoreline and it was very good. It was very crowded and we had to wait to be seated even though we had a reservation. People just weren't leaving as quickly as management probably wanted. I had butternut squash soup as a starter and prime rib. It was very good and I loved the atmosphere. I'd definetly go back.
