Burgers Revisited

I've always thought Fatburger was pretty underrated in the classic burger category.

Fig Produce in trouble! Please consider this excellent eastdside store for shopping this Holiday.

Figueroa Produce is great! If you are anywhere near the neighborhood, please give it a try. The prices are amazing for what you get. It's about the best meat department I've seen (including the grass feed beef). They also have home-made salsa, hummus, etc. Great prices on cheese. And lots of specialty items. Give them your money instead of Ralphs!

Bakery Bun for burgers (Pasadena)

I need to buy great buns to make burgers at home. My favorite kind when I eat out are the bakery buns that are light and thin (not too bready, so the focus is on the meat). For example, I love the buns at The York.

Where can I buy these? I have looked at Whole Foods but I didn't see anything good. Any ideas? Anything near Pasadena or surrounding areas (Eagle Rock, Silver Lake) is good.

Cheap produce on the East Side?

It's not in Silverlake, but anyone a bit farther east should check out Figueroa Produce in Highland Park. Great produce, some organic, at amazing prices.

First Time at Langer's

The #19 is one of the greatest sandwiches (or any food for that matter) on this entire earth.

What's the spiciest (yet still edible) Dish you've had in LA?

Chicken Lal Mirch Lava (or with another meat) at Lal Mirch -- 11138 Ventura Boulevard, Studio City, CA 91604.

It's in the top five spiciest dishes I've ever ordered (at least as hot as spicy dishes at Jitlada) and pretty tasty as well. The first night I ate as much as I could handle. With the leftovers I mixed it with a mild tomato based sauce so I could enjoy the flavors. They will warn you before you order it that it's extremely hot, and they're not joking.

Best pastrami in L.A.

Often not mentioned but profoundly important is the BREAD at Langers. Soft in the middle while still crunchy on the outside, it is the best bread for pastrami sandwiches in the world. I thought the meat at Katz's was close to Langers, but the bread not even in the same league.

What do you think of Rachael Ray's picks?

The picks are not as bad as some are claiming. It's obviously not the best food in LA, but for a tourist, that's a fine list of fun places to try. I enjoy most of them myself on occasion.

Fun weird restaurants in LA?

Oh come on, it's not THAT bad. Their hot sauce is good so buy that and put it on whatever food you get and it'll taste ten times better. As for weird places in LA just based on atmosphere Clifton's is by far the weirdest and the best. Bahooka is a very close second, you can't beat a hundred fish tanks that surround every booth in the restaurant.

Good (not trendy) Mexican tonite in Silverlake/Los Feliz

Alegria is my favorite mexican food in the city. Homeade tasting and special. At times there can be a wait, it depends what night you go.

Mexico City is more "trendy". The food is okay but I would not go it if you are trying to avoid that vibe.

Antigua Bread in Highland Park?

They opened today. If you live in the neighborhood I highly recommend it. Very cute inside, friendly, and lots of food choices. I had the burger, which was very good. Looking at other people's food I have a feeling the grilled veggie sandwich may be the way to go. Sure there were some opening day mistakes, but all things considered, they were pretty organized and professional. Check it out!

Restaurant w/ just Fries?

Yes, Islands fries are great. I don't think the burgers are half-bad either. But the fries are truly outstanding.

What's the deal with Highland Perk?

I was there today, at the grand opening, and left very impressed. It's a great spot to hang out. Lots of couches and free wifi. The coffee and food were pretty good. They're still a bit disorganized, so expect to wait longer than you should to get served. But that's to be expected at first. After the disappointing closure of Mudpuppies, anyone in the area should come out and support this place.
