Private dining on the strip
Thanks Dave I will get in touch with them. Definitely doesn't need to be a meal of a lifetime for sure, just somewhere decent :)
Private dining on the strip
I've been tasked with finding a suitable restaurant for an evening meal in Vegas. I have friends coming in from out of the country, getting married, and they'd like somewhere decent for a meal that evening. They don't need wedding cakes or anything over the top, just somewhere comfortable with agreeable food.
The kicker is that ideally they would like a private room, to give a few speeches and the like. My gut feeling is that for their ideal spending spending range (of $100 a head) its a complete non starter for a private room. I thought I'd check with you good folks here first, before heading down a fruitless path.
It would be for 12 people, in early April probably around 8pm. I thought of places like Bouchon and Mon Ami Gabi, but I've a nagging feeling the minimum spend is going to be triple if not more for private dining. Am I right/wrong?
Many thanks for any input and guidance in advance.

Good vegi restaurants in SLC?
Also, completely forgot Kathmandu (http://www.thekathmandu.net/). We've been eating there extensively lately, really good. Half the menu is Vegi friendly.

Good vegi restaurants in SLC?
Sages Cafe (http://www.sagescafe.com/) always get a lot of plaudits although I've never tried it personally. I've never been to Vertical Diner either (www.verticaldiner.com) but they too have their fans.
While not specifically a vegi restaurant The Copper Onion (http://www.thecopperonion.com) is a fantastic restaurant and the guys there treat the vegetable dishes Iwith just as much respect as the meat dishes. The fried egg on potato sticks is wonderful. They have other vegi options and you can their vegi sides to are knock outs.
Long Life Vegi House on 33rd is a 100% vegi Chinese restaurant has been a staple of mine for about ten years now, decent not mindblowing. Our last food there was a bit under par though and I wonder if they changed ownership.

Food scene in SLC
SLC has come a long way over the last decade. I think we have a great town now, for the food lover. Its never going to be CA for fresh produce, nor Chicago or New York for restaurants; but what we have is great. I don't think you will be disappointed if you keep that in mind.
Theres a good mix of budget to more fancy grocery stores. Harmons is probably the best for the more gourmet minded, but it is a bit pricier than most. They do great cheeses, bread, meats, fish etc. Caputos Market and Deli downtown is a small independent deli operation and has won national awards for what it does, check them out for sure.
We do have plenty of CSA's but I havent personally tested them: http://www.csautah.org During the warmer months we have a great farmers market, and Caputos also hosts a number of local producers throughout the year at the weekend too.
I may be biased but I think we have tons of fantastic restaurants from mom and pop joints to high end. Forage for instance recently won an award along side restaurants such as Per Se in NYC. If you want specific recommendations just let me know and I will be happy to talk all day long about restaurants :)
Vinto Pizzeria in Salt Lake City?
It gets the thumbs up from us, that's for sure. We just posted a review of Vinto as our latest article actually. There has been some staffing changes at the head chef level since though, fingers crossed that doesn't impact them.

Salt Lake City restaurants
You aren't far from downtown SLC so could probably take your pick from anything there. Any cuisine preferences, price point etc?

One Meal in Salt Lake City
If both cuisine type and price point are fine, do you a location preference?
Downtown, Takashi is always reliable for fantastic and inventive sushi. Arrive early when they open to ensure you snag a table.
I also like the Tin Angel Cafe which has a new american/local produce leaning.
A little further out into the burbs, the recently opened Pago is causing a stir too. Local produce being the emphasis of the cuisine. Plan on making a reservation in advance if you go here. The place is tiny and is crazy popular, rightly so (the beets and lamb on my last visit were top notch).

One dinner in Salt Lake City...recs?
I really like the Tin Angel Cafe:
http://www.thetinangel.com/index.html
I wouldn't say it is upscale as such, it has a more quirky/independent vibe. That's not to say it is a cheap meal either though. For me they are a restaurant with a lot of consistency, and their focus is on locally sourced where they can.
The Wild Grape Bistro has a more upscale feel and also focuses on locall sourced, but can be a little more erratic imho:
http://www.thetinangel.com/index.html
Which is more important in your meal, the finer dining or the locally sourced element? I could (as I am sure many others here) recommend some really good high end dining establishments, but their main focus isn't on locally sourced.

Good food near Salt Palace, Salt Lake City
My wife commented the same about J Wong's being very similar to PF Changs. I've never been myself, it being a chain. At any rate, regardless of authenticity, I still found my last meal there very reasonable and plenty tasty.
Good call on Cindy Lee too! I always seem to forget about the place, as they keep the strangest random hours late afternoon and evenings

Good food near Salt Palace, Salt Lake City
A couple of new places I am fond of downtown are and Eva and J Wong's Asian Bistro. The former is small plates, Mediterranean style, quite inexpensive too. The latter serves up a mix of Chinese/Thai, in fairly upscale amabiance.
Two great older places downtown in the inexpensive bracket are Red Rock Brewing co (pub grub). and Settebello for Neapolitan style pizza.

Restaurant Charlie - Palazzo - Las Vegas
I for one hope it remains open, at least the Bar Charlie aspect of the operation. Quite simply the best meal by far I have had in Vegas, maybe the states.

Suggestions for Trout in Salt Lake City and vicinity
Personally I would put the Wild Grape in the same category in terms of casual/price wise as the Market Street restaurants. It is however much more contemporary, that is true.
To be honest, it's not a fish I see on menu's *that* often, despite its abundance locally. Salmon and Halibut are the heavyweights. New restaurants coming up soon like Forage, Pago and Tipica, promising local sourcing might change things for the better.
Maybe someone else knows where to snag a good traditional trout?

Suggestions for Trout in Salt Lake City and vicinity
The last *excellent* trout we had here was over at the Wild Grape Bistro. I believe this was in our review here:

Their menu does change regularly, so you might want to give them a call:

Salt Lake City eats?
That thread is pretty old now I think. Right now downtown my favourite restaurants that fit your budget would be Takashi (unbeatable sushi), Eva (pocket friendly small plates and drinks) and the Tin Angel Cafe (new American with a focus on local produce)

Anything new in Salt Lake City?
A big thumbs up for Eva from me too. Far cheaper than Meditrina and better food too in my opinion.
J Wong's Asian Bistro is also garnering plenty of praise, although I have yet to try that personally.

Looking for Dives in Salt Lake City
What would you consider the definition of a dive? The term always intrigues me, in my mind I wouldn't want to eat in a dive, it has fairly negative connotation for me.
I like Red Iguana, but not sure I'd call it a dive?

Salt Lake City Trip Report
I'm glad to see you tried Takashi, it really is one of the better restaurants you can try here.
As for the Bayou I have never had much luck with the food either, how did you find the beer? For all their fuss about having millions of beers, I have had countless experiences being told my selection was not available.

NY foodies looking for good food in Salt Lake City!
Personally I'm no fan of Crown Burger or Chuck a rama. I don't see the attraction of either. You could probably skip rodizio also, as I am guessing theres plenty of churrascaria in NYC. Your other picks are big favourites.
You might also want to add to those:
Takashi - sushi
Meditrina - small plates and wine bar
Tin Angel Cafe - focused on local/organic produce

Salt Lake City Recommendations?
What did you try there? I'm by no means a Red Iguana aficionado, but those who are recommend avoiding the tex-mex fare of enchliadas, burritos etc. instead go for some of the more unique items they serve.

Solo Dining in LV--Help me choose between Bar Charlie and CUT.
Brash might not be the perfect word. When I last visited CUT though it was REALLY loud in there, the place was a mad hectic rush, our server was always in a rush, and really loud too. It wasn't what I'd call relaxing, but was a fine meal.

Salt Lake City Restaurants?
I'll second the recommendations for Tin Angel. It might be worth you calling ahead for reservations if you do go. It's not a huge place and can get full quickly at the weekends.
I'll also suggest Meditrina, a new small plates joint, which I think is excellent: www.meditrinaslc.com

Solo Dining in LV--Help me choose between Bar Charlie and CUT.
Vastly different experiences. CUT is a loud, modern and somewhat brash steakhouse. Bar Charlie is serene, elegant and luxurious.
Bar Charlie is my favourite restaurant in Vegas hands down, if you can afford it and like the cuisine they offer, go now. No comparison in my opinion.

Great round up, nice to hear about some places I haven't tried out there. I'm really glad to see you enjoyed Ganesh. It's definitely my favourite in SLC for a curry, and as you say the staff are really friendly.

New and notable in Las Vegas
I think Bar Charlie in the Palazzo is a must. I also expect it won't be long before the place closes given the present economic climate, so if it's within your budget I would jump at the oportunity to try it. Two recent reviews here:

Also in SLC, Franck's and The Paris. The former French skewed american comfort food, and the latter French bistro fare. Both excellent.
