Melanie, just picked up and tasted a bottle of GO's Gallo 2003 cab. There must be considerable bottle variation. Ours had no nose or fruit and was badly oxidized. Not a good deal even @ $4.99

Neilo, For $7.99 give the Star a try and get back to the board with your opinion.

Indian/Pakistani Buffet near Arguello blvd / Geary Blvd in SF
Correcto!! They also have a dinner buffet @ $7.99.
Dudo, 1000 Clement Street at 11th Ave.
I think the sign reads "Tu do". Apparently it's they're third try after Oakland and Polk St. Had the beef pho hoping to rekindle memories of the beef broth with a hint of anise that I oftened enjoyed in that location's earlier soup joint. Instead the house special combo was an anise broth with a hint of beef. Otherwise good ingredients with perfectly cooked noodles and excellent service.
Taishan Cafe Clement/12 Ave
Had my first rice clay pot last night. It was listed as the Special Combination and was a bagain priced, delicious combo of yellow eel, frog legs, and lop cheong. The crispy rice was a very tasty bonus.
I didn't find the review until this AM. Looking forward to expanding my Taishan experience.

Second-hand cookbooks?
Just in case it hasn't been mentioned, the Book Store at Fort Mason has a fairly good selection of used cook books at great prices.
Tasty Korean in SF?
Under spicing at HIK hasn't been a problem for me since I started using the Chowhound line;"I may be American, but my stomach is Korean".
California Pacific Medical Center, San Francisco
And the tab, including tip, came to?????
YUMMY.....NOT
Had dinner at Yummy on Irving/11th last night. Ordered raw beef salad, Viet crepe, and catfish clay pot. I guess I've been spoiled by Bodegas nom and bahn xeo. Yummy's salad was tasteless, the nuoc cham was oily, the crepe suggested old cooking grease with too many sprouts, too few shrimp, and 3 small pieces of grey, unrecognizable meat. The clay pot was cloyingly sweet but edible. The service, as always, was friendly and attentive. This was our first time back in about 2 years, has quality gone downhill or were they just having an off night??
Any credit for a first to find Mission Hole In The Wall?
Familia Lopez Café, 2913 16th St.(bet. Mission and South Van Ness). Mexican, cleaner and better organized than Yucanasia, more tables than Yamo. My interest was peaked by the $6-6.50 daily specials listed on an out front sandwich board. Today’s special was one of my favorites, caldo de pollo. Chips, homemade salsa, tortillas and a hearty bowl of 3 pieces skinned chicken, carrots, potatoes, and squash in an excellent chicken broth with a lime, rice, minced cilantro-onion side, all for $6.00. I can’t remember all of dailies but the ones that stood out are pork ribs in salsa verde, albondigas, chicken mole, and pozole. Now all I have to do is find more excuses to visit the Mission.
Chowcooks: Fresh anchovies at the Ferry Building!
Not this year, the waters outside the Gate have been wall to wall with anchovies but an absolute dead zone for salmon. The good news, I guess, is there is no shortage of 1/2 pound Pacific mackerel. If you find any at the local fishmongers they should be fresh and will be delicious grilled with a little S & P.
sanmi (geary @ spruce) in the old BY Grill location
The scoop on Sanmi. Translates to “Hopeful for a 3rd bloom”. This is the Suzuki family’s’’ 3rd SF restaurant.. Mr. and Mrs. Suzuki owned and operated Sanppo in Jtown from 1972-1996 and Miki’s on Balboa from 1991-2001. Apparently couldn’t handle retirement and last month, with their daughter, opened Sanmi. Had a super meal there Thursday night and will follow with specifics as soon as I find my notes.
What is YOUR top ramen list?
We were going to try it last night, the remodel looked inviting, but the menu was suspect, opted for Indian. Will do lunch there latter this week.
Bodega Bay seafood -- buying from the boats?
Imjann, what did you find out about buying salmon "from the boats"? The local GG fish have gone elsewhere and word has it that the schools and comercial boats are 30 miles or more above Bodega and that the stick boats will be unloading in Bodega.
Local Source for Pink Salt??
I think JDM is looking for a nitrite containing curing salt which is usually tinted pink to distinguish it from white table salt.
Local Source for Pink Salt??
If you're referring to 6.25% sodium nitrite(prague #1) try First Spice Mixing Co. 195 Arkansas St. I think 10#s cost me about $7.00.
What is YOUR top ramen list?
Another new Japanese(apparently non sushi)restaurant is scheduled to open in the old WeBeSushi/BY location this Saturday.
What is YOUR top ramen list?
Yep! Drinking on 3rd Ave will do that to you. The storefront that previously rented Korean videos. Now has a 30 foot "Grand Opening" banner. Damn I'm glad I didn't say observant, intelligent, etc.
What is YOUR top ramen list?
How is this for the perfect ramen-shabu segue?
"GENKI RAMEN and SHABU" opening soon on the north side of Geary between 3rd and 4th Aves.
Korean shabu shabu
I'm very familar with Melanies's fantastic list, I just thought it would be interesting to hear from umetaro on the subject. His have been some of the most informative, intelligent, and entertaining posts on the Forum lately and I was looking forward to his opinion.

Looking for source for a lot of wood chips for our new smoker
Make sure whatever you buy is hardwood. I do a lot of smoking with sawdust, but the company I deal with also has a wide selection of chips and chunks in various flavors. The price is right, shipping free, service excellent.
