Mt. Signal Cafe - "puffy" quesadillas

Sorry, Jon, I didn't see this question until now. I went to Central and graduated in '77.

Crab meat for Crab cakes.

YES! That is it! Yay You! The only difference in how I do it is that I leave out the Parsley and use Kraft Parmesan cheese (I know, I know...) and a couple of dashes of Tabasco or other hot sauce.. But hey, it must be good! Everyone always wants the recipe!

Crab meat for Crab cakes.

Sorry that I missed that you all were wanting the recipe for the Crab Dip. I'll post it tomorrow in the recipe section and let you all know when it is up. It was from a restaurant called Stanley & Seafort's in Tacoma, WA. So many people asked for their recipe that they printed up flyers to hand out...

Mt. Signal Cafe - "puffy" quesadillas

I'm gonna vote for Celia's for the best special quesadilla and they'll serve it with the Relleno Sauce over it if you want. The Hacienda used to do that but I haven't been to Hacienda in years. I love Puerto Nuevo campechana so I'll try the quesadilla next time I'm down there. Better get down before the heat starts!

Love me a really good Deli sandwich..

Like the BMH recommendation made earlier but they are hit and miss as to the servings of meat being sparse. The bread and mama's sauce are excellent. I still order sandwiches from Nicolosi's on their in-house rolls. Usually a winner. Gus' in Pt. Loma has never disappointed me (they also have a La Mesa location).

Not a deli, but have you tried the sandwiches at Tender Greens? Thinly sliced grilled flank steak with roasted red peppers or a roasted chicken sandwich on ciabatta (these both come with a side salad). Very delicious!

Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina

Local fresh foods are found in a restaurant called Tender Greens in the old Naval Training Center development called Liberty Station (just west of the airport). It is a short cab ride away and they are know for their grilled meats served atop locally grown produce. Grilled Flank steak, grilled chicken, grilled Ahi and a nightly special. Tonight was Swordfish. They sometimes have short ribs or some other delicacy served with Yukon gold mashed potatoes. Check it out. I think you'll be pleased.

Need help in Rancho Bernardo

The two places that come to mind that can handle 40-50 in Escondido are Cocina del Charro on Quince street and Mi Guadalajara on North 2nd. Cocina del Charro actually has a separate banquet area but I can't say the atmosphere in it is anything special. Hacienda de Vega has a beautiful setting but the food is mediocre unless it's gotten better recently.

Best bacon in San Diego?!

Has anyone tried Fletcher's peppered bacon? I think I may have purchased it at Major Market but can't really remember. Anyway, it was delicious.

Oh how this would have helped for my SD visit.

And yet another unbiased tourist comes away from our city having LOVED Las Cuatro Milpas. I'm so glad because there are so many CH who are always bashing it....I love talking to the enthusiastic people in line who love it and have gone there for YEARS! Thanks Tor.hound and I am looking forward to your indepth reviews of the other two...

Knight Salami Company (San Diego)

I've now bought 5 different salami from Rey's booth. The first two were great and caused us to enthusiastically buy 3 salamis about a month later. 2 of the 3 had an off flavor, almost sour-like and I was going to bring them back the next week but didn't go back to the Farmer's Market for about a month. I saw and spoke to Rey about it. He was very defensive of the issues I raised and even though I wasn't looking for a refund or anything, I think he should have taken the feedback and offered to look into it. In reading the posts, I'm apparently not the only one who had a problem. I won't buy again until I hear the consistency is there...

Point Loma Seafoods or Hudson Bay Seafood in SD - which would you pick?

When you arrive at the San Diego airport and go to Trader Joe's at Liberty Station (down the street from the airport), you can stop and have lunch at Tender Greens located right behind Trader Joe's. It is a new and increasingly popular spot for lunch and dinner. Grilled ahi, grilled flank steak or grilled chicken are the usual proteins along with fresh, farm-to-table salad fixins. Absolutely delicious and the desserts are homemade by the owner's Mom.

Crab meat for Crab cakes.

Made a delicious hot crab dip using Costco's COS crabmeat and everyone raved about it and asked for the recipe, so I would say it was a good replacement for Phillips. I can still buy Phillips at the commissary but I think I'll stick with Chicken of the Sea brand.

Need dinner recommendation in or near Point Loma

The Brigantine is about 5 blocks away and they have great Fish Tacos in the bar, so it kind of fits what you want (price & seafood). It would be a shame for you not to eat at Tender Greens, located at Liberty Station (the old NTC training center). The food is fresh and the entrees are $10 and there are always people eating solo in there. It's got a cool, breezy atmosphere and friendly staff.

SD..Where's your favorite place to get a Chile Relleno?

If you want to go pick up one "to go", I had a delicious Chile Relleno with some great sauce at Pancho Villas supermarket. The one from Otay Farms Market in Chula Vista wasn't bad, either as I got it freshly made. I wouldn't want one that's been sitting on the warming tray awhile though.

downtown SD tonight

Your criteria (casual, close to the airport, inexpensive) all cry Tender Greens. For $10 you could have Grilled Flank Steak salad on Butter lettuce (you can also have the Flank Steak as a sandwich) or Chitpotle Chicken Salad which has avocado, cotija cheese, etc. This place is located in Liberty Station and is getting busier and busier each time we go. The word is out!

San Diego Gaslamp- Where to Eat/Drink

I second the recommendations of Beach Chick, especially Dobson's. If you are looking for something a little less formal, try O'Brother's Hamburgers in Horton Plaza. You can sit by the window and watch the people walking by and the goings-on downtown and enjoy a delicious, well-prepared burger made with organic ingredients.

I can't say enough about the Firehouse Cafe! OMG, we had such a good meal there last night! My parents split a plate of the Pot Roast which was fall-apart good. I ordered the Prime Rib (only on Saturdays) and it was delicious, served with a wonderful Au Jus and grilled vegetables and smashed potatoes. My husband ordered the Beef Stroganoff which was a little on the salty side but still good. The desserts were wonderful! They had an awesome bread pudding and the Banana Cake with Chocolate Frosting was moist and flavorful. A little pricey but seriously worth it!

Looking for restaurant recommendations in Sedona area

For a casual but tasty breakfast, eat at the Coffee Pot Cafe.

A fun place to eat lunch with a good, solid menu is up at the Airport Cafe (next to Sky Ranch Lodge). You can sit there and watch the planes taking off and landing. I had a great Club Sandwich with a wonderful bowl of homemade chicken noodle soup today. My husband really liked his Bacon Cheeseburger. We plan to go to Shugrue's tonight. It always had consistently good food. Cucina Rustica has excellent Italian if that is what you are in the mood for...

Brunch in San Diego, Broken Yolk or Harry's Coffee Shop?

One place that wasn't mentioned that is kind of in between those 2 restaurants mentioned in the original post is The Eggery. It is located in Pacific Beach in the Hooters/Tony Roma shopping center (south of Grand). I've been going there for 10 years now and have only sent back one dish. They have some awesome apple pancakes and I love their Huevos Rancheros plate. Try the Eggs Benedict with some avocado added - I think you'll like it.

I like the pancakes at Harry's but for consistency in food preparation, I'd go with The Eggery every time.

SD- Mission Beach with Kids

You might want to try The Eggery for breakfast or lunch. Reasonable prices, consistently good food but nothing fancy. It is half a block from the beach in the Tony Roma's/Hooters building (caddy-corner from the Catamaran).

The Firehouse American Eatery (next to the Fire Station) at the foot of Grand Avenue has been getting some good reports.

You could eat at Saska's for dinner. If you go up to Garnet and head east, there is a Lotsa Pasta restaurant in the Von's shopping center that the kids will probably like.

San Simeon Suggestions

You'll definitely be eating in Cambria to get good food in that area. The Sea Chest is great! Everyone in my family loves it. The Sow's Ear is also top notch. A more casual choice would be the Tri Tip place on the corner coming in to town (sorry, the name escapes me right now...). It is right next to the Shell station and has huge grills outside where they cook the Tri Tip. There are big screen TV's inside and I think your son would enjoy it. Great, tender Tri Tip!

The Creekside is a good place for breakfast. Consistently good food.

Linn's is kind of touristy and hit or miss as far as quality but when it's good, it's very good.

real american diners

And be sure to order Bette's pancakes! The Best!

San Diego, Best Food, Best View?

Josh already mentioned it but I was going to suggest the Marine Room too. Chef Bernard has an excellent staff that puts out consistently good food. George's is good but a little too hustle/bustle for me.

Another place that is being overlooked because it is fairly new is Vela's in the Bayfront Hilton. Great views and the food I had there was top notch.

San Diego Restaurant Quandry

I want to second mcgrath's recommendation to McCormick and Schmick's. They have a wonderfully priced (and BUSY) bar at happy hour with a great menu. Their entrees in the restaurant can be as low as $14...

Cafe Chloe is always highly recommended...

New at Little Italy's Farmers Market

I wouldn't have a problem paying $20 for a chicken if it was a good sized one and tastes as good as mentioned. It would only be used in a recipe that highlighted the best qualities of something raised in that manner...in other words, it wouldn't be plopped into a pot for chicken cacciatore!

At that price, it's certainly not something I'd buy often, but I'm sure I'd enjoy it for special occasions.

San Diego is for Breakfast

Places for breakfast near the roller coaster might be The Mission on Mission Boulevard or else The Eggery which is just northwest of The Catamaran (where Tony Roma's is). I've never eaten at the former but the Eggery makes awesome apple pancakes and Eggs Benedict.

The big cinnamon roll place has got to be Hob Nob Hill, I would think. I think it's just OK but their baked goods are delicious! Another good place for breakfast near Balboa Park is Jimmy Carters. They have a delicious Chilaquile plate that I love and my husband likes their pancakes. Service can be meh...

San Diego restaurants-- Interesting food But Not Top Dollar?

I think you might enjoy going over to Liberty Station which is a renovated area that was formerly housing the Navy Training Center (you can even see the boat that a lot of local sailors used in Basic Training). It is on the other side (West) of the airport, not far at all from the Gaslamp since you have a car and has quite a variety of restaurants.

My favorite there is Tender Greens. http://www.tendergreensfood.com/ They serve some delicious salads and the owner Ryan's mother makes their desserts from scratch.

To me, they embody all the fresh ingredients that are at our disposal here in San Diego. The proteins (chitpotle chicken, marinated flank steak, ahi, etc.) are grilled to perfection on their open grill and they have an assortment of grilled vegetables that really enhance the salad.

You can also order a grilled flank steak sandwich on ciabatta that is quite good.

Liberty station also has Point Loma Sports Grill, Sammy's Woodfired Pizza, Solare Ristorante and DaKines (Hawaiian) if you are in the mood for something like that.

Afterwards, you can stroll the pretty grounds and enjoy a Cold Stone ice cream and take in the summer breeze in front of a pretty water fountain.

You will be close to Little Italy and you can tell by the crowds which restaurants there are popular. It's also a nice place to stroll. Most of the restaurants there have their menus posted outside to help you make a decision.

Cazadores in Santee, CA

Had a chance to finally stop in and visit the new Cazadores Restaurant across from Kohl's in Santee (where the new Henry's was built). We had a real good meal, especially for the price. The place was immaculate and very nicely decorated.

I ordered the Tampiquena which is carne asada with a cheese enchilada and rice & beans ($7.69) and it was good but I have to warn you though...if you don't like cinnamon in your red sauce...don't order it!

The fish taco plate was substantial and was made with TWO full size corn tortillas that had a really good flavor $6.09). A real bargain for the amount of food you get.

They have a nice salsa bar and some fresh tasting Aquas frescas. Maybe they are made from scratch? There's no logo on the machines they were in...

I will go back but stay away from the red sauce...

Best Deals for $5.00 in SD (Blatantly Stealing a Topic)

You could have a healthy, good-sized salad at Tender Greens in Liberty Station for $5.00. At the other end of the "healthy" spectrum would be a HUGE burrito at Los Cuatro Milpas in Barrio Logan for $4.50 (or three well-filled tacos at $1.50 apiece). I'm happy with either choice.

So where is a good breakfast in SD?

Warrior Rabbit, I'm gonna have to try the Potato Shack the next time we are in Encinitas. We had breakfast at St. Germain's Cafe down the street from there this morning and it was delicious! I had the Garden omelette which was filled with fresh spinach, green peppers, onions and tomatoes and topped with Cheddar cheese (served with Cafe Potatoes). Hubby had the Hearty breakfast which he had with pancakes, Louisiana sausage and 2 eggs. With our beverages, the total bill was $23. Well worth every cent. I asked the server to be sure to tell the cooks that everything was wonderfully prepared!
