Best eats in Buenos Aires
there are some great places for vegetarians in Colegiales if you're willing to wander out of the center...
like La Casa de Ohsawa and La Esquina de las Flores in Palermo are veg.
Sarkis and Hola Luis and Cafe San Juan are just delicious as heck...
check out my blog for more tips too.

I miss Bs As.. I'm in Ecuador now wondering what's for dinner.
Sarasota Indian food: Has anyone tried the new place on 41 where Morocco used to be?
I think it is called "Taste of India" and is in the strip mall on the south trail near the Outback, etc. Has anyone been there? I am trying to find my local Indian go-to....
Terrific Pho, Bahn Mi, and Spring Rolls at Amy's Pho on 301 (SARASOTA)
I just visited Amy's for the second time this week for lunch. Both times it was excellent, rivaling the best bahn mi and pho in Manhattan's Chinatown, where I lived for 7 years before returning to my hometown, here, Sarasota. I'm totally stunned and so excited to have found this place.
They bake their own delicious, perfect bread that they toast generously so it is nice and crispy. The pate is delicious and both the chicken and pork versions are very tasty with good picked carrots. I think I could have eaten about 4 of them.
The pho broth is awesome and addictive and noodles plentiful. The condiments (bean sprouts, lime, greens) are all crisp and very fresh. Never a bit of brown or trace of old. The spring rolls were warm and flavorful, with both shrimp and pork rolled together with the rice noodles.
The prices are right and the lowest they can possibly go to stay in business, which they are ostensibly struggling to do. So, please eat at Amy's and help a great family joint with a true passion for perfect Vietnamese food stay in business. Sarasota, with all its bland steakhouses and cheesy seafood restaurants, needs a place like this! Hooray for Amy's!
Cold, Light Summer Food in Brooklyn
Looking for good spots in the downtown/carroll gardens/ slope areas for cold soups or ceviches, super fresh salads incorporating the summer's bounty. Any favorites?
Chilled Soups and other Refreshing Summer Food?
Has anyone had any especially good chilled cucumber (or other) soups and tasty cold summer foods? Trying to orchestrate some "farewell dinners" around health, summer produce, cool temperatures, and flavor.
Thanks!
El Almacen-- very good but check your bill!
Nothing, it was a dramatic miscalculation-- they weren't trying to charge us for something we didn't buy, there was just some (very) faulty math.
El Almacen-- very good but check your bill!
Not So Chubby, that's what I'm wondering. I'm suspicious the waitress was trying pull a fast one on us-- maybe thinking we were drunk and jovial enough to just drop our credit card down and not check the math? Regardless I'm still recommending the place, but just warning the eating community that this place isn't good with the calculator, and isn't ashamed of it.
El Almacen-- very good but check your bill!
I had a _delightful_ time eating my heart out at El Almacen recently-- even my snooty Bay Area friend put one bite of the short rib dish in her mouth and pronounced it her favorite new York restaurant. There were 6 of us and we tried a good percentage of the menu, with wine, and we were so happy. Its was quiet, the ambiance perfect, the waitstaff very handsome, etc. Great dining experience, right? The check comes and its $475!! We take out the cellular calculator and find the bill was no less than $200 off. The corrected bill was $254.
!! huge discrepancy!
The worst part is that they weren't even that apologetic. I mean, we really wanted to believe it was an honest mistake, but they didn't give us any reason to. It ruined the evening so much! So anyway, go here, enjoy, but check the arithmetic.
I could use a really good meal in Berlin
I just had a lovely set meal at SCHLESISCH BLAU in Kreuzberg, just out the Ubahn stop at Schleisches (...) Tor. Very lovely self-serve off the wood stove white spargel soup, huge heap of greens, then a very tasty herby vegeteble "lasagna" that was a shredded mass of veggies in a burrito-like form of philo dough, and we also had a nice pork chop in a brown sauce which came with what I can't describe better than and herbed french toast. Dark brown sauce & okra. Very good! Dessert was a plum tart. The menu changes daily and it just a warm and dear place, I think. DOes anyone else know about it?
Berlin recommendations?
If anyone can remember where any of the current "pay what you will" secret wine bars are, those are always a great experience. I went to one a few years back in Prenzlauerberg that was just so adorable and delicious.
Colegiales-- lunch recommendations?
Thanks for the passionate reply, Lizzzie! I will check it out.
Colegiales-- lunch recommendations?
Hey Hounds,
I'm in Buenos Aires, well off the tourist route in Colegiales. I'm curious if anyone has any lunch, dinner or COFFEE recommendations? I'm here for about a month to work and to dance y estoy sola so am really interested in some laid back, delicious and barato places that are good for dining alone. I walk everywhere (especially in this weather!) so will travel, but am curious about my home front. Graaaacias!
First Trip to Buenos Aires
I'm here for my first time too, and just had a really wonderful walk through the beautiful neighborhood of Chacarita where I had a great dinner at Santa Gula on Jorge Newberry / Guevara. Way off the beaten tourist path and well worth a visit. Very inexpensive, heaping portions, good wine, lovely service, outdoor dining. True love. A radio taxi can take your there from Palermo for less than five dollars. The sun doesn't set here until 9:30 or so, so its also a nice walk-- very cool, dynamic architecture and vegetation. Other than that I'd enjoy a beer or two in San Telmo around Plaza Dorrego where you can watch tango performers but I'd eat away from there... Tons of great spots around Palermo. Good coffee is hard to find though.
South Orange Dinner for City Folk?
My partner and I are attending an 8pm performance at the SOPAC and we are wondering what to do for supper. We usually eat late but my hunch is that restaurants in a town such as this might close early, like 10pm? If so, we'll eat before the show, but where? Help us out! Omnivores.
Fuleen Seafood-- what to order
I picked up the take away menu last night just to peruse it and honestly, its pretty intimidating! Dry Seafood with Black Moss? Loofah and Bamboo Bit? Seafood Birds Nest? Hell, even "stewed eel" catches me off-guard, so would LOVE some tips.
late dinner in chinatown
The guys at Chatham Sq Restaurant said they were open until 11pm when I was in there earlier this week at about 10 pm... Delicious food if you can get there by 11 and don't mind sitting in an empty restaurant... There's always Wo Hop, which I think is disgusting, but the rest of the world seems to love, so you'll have a lot of company there.
Best Latte or Cappucino
Whoopsie! I meant-- where do I go on those unfortunate mornings when I'm out of coffee beans at home (I order Stumptown through the internet...) and I must trek out in Chinatown in search of a "real coffee" or at least a good try at it. Dire situation down here at the end of Bowery!
Edgewater Japanese Dinner tonight?
We went to the one behind Mitsuwa (the grocery); I can't remember which one that is. It was good but I didn't have a mind-blowing experience-- it could have been because the place is ginormous and we were the only people there so the ambiance was a little off. It is right on the Hudson with nice city views though. And there was a jazz trio when we were there which was nice.
Very good teryaki beef, I remember, and very fresh shashimi. Definitely a good place to go with a large group.
Best Latte or Cappucino
Okay, so is there any good bakery style coffee? What about that place on Mott, sortof across from Mosco/ Wo Hop? Where do I go when I'm out of beans? Even a sure-fire Little Italy spot would be appreciated... (south of Broome I'm thinking).
Sura, the King's Meal
You're awesome, thanks for the vote! I plan on checking it out asap and will report back.
Where for Dinner with 3 Kids?
I can't wait to try Fuleen. I actually live on Division Street and have never gone there... Mostly because I feel like if I'm going to go out to eat, I should at least cross the street. Thank you for this tip.
Where for Dinner with 3 Kids?
Cool, thank you! I've never heard of Hill Country before. It sounds a lot like Kentucky Reds in Portland, OR, which I miss a lot from my years there.
Chatham Sq Restaurant
Hi Brian, I went to the upscale one! -- with the yellow linens and flatscreen tvs on the walls playing Chinese melodrama. Our bill was about $50 for two soups and 3 entrees, no drinks. I haven't been to the smaller hole in the wall before.
Chatham Sq Restaurant
Nope, just the stuff in the pot they brought out was really nice and smooth.
Outdoor Bloody Mary
Who knows where to go for a good Bloody Mary (with all the vegs and good spices!) and sit outside?? I know Prune does a good Bloody Mary, but no outdoor seating. If there are any good outdoor dining/drinking threads, let me know. Can't find.
Chatham Sq Restaurant
I ate here last night-- so good! Having my small portion of leftovers right now for lunch. This is what we ordered:
Very tasty hot and sour soup (egg drop not as yummy) then boyfriend and I shared the snow pea greens with garlic (perfect, no too greasy, heaping portion), the house special Chilean Sea Bass (a crisp exterior and a tad sweet, served with delicious sauteed red onions), and the Szechuan spicy shrimp and veggies. All very good, nice staff, good tea, good experience. Topped it off with some almond cookie ice cream at the Ice Cream Factory on Bayard, made me love New York with a full heart on spring evening. Hooray for Chatham Sq !
Help me with my "12 places to eat in NY" game
Don't forget to eat a Bahn Mi at Saigon on Mott. The #1, spicy. Perfect for lunch and wandering around.
Baked Bread - Where is NYC's best baguette?
Who supplies Tarralucci e Vino's baguettes? I've had a couple good ones from the E 10th St location.
Best Latte or Cappucino
I was really excited to see that La Colombe moved up here from Philly-- they're on Church just below Canal. Really, really good espresso and coffee. I love that place. Gimme Coffee is awesome and they just opened on Elizabeth St in Nolita, which is much more convenient than trekking to the location on Grand in Brooklyn. I am curious though, who makes the best coffee in Chinatown, around Bowery/East Broadway/Mott? Anyone know?
