Sister Seeks Perfect Lobster Salad Roll in Connecticut.

I don't know about the lobster salad but for hot buttered lobster rools my husband swears by the Blue Lobster on the Berlin turnpike in Berlin. I know they have lobster salad though.

Cedars in Somerville is now The Smokehouse Barbecue

We went 3 weeks ago on a Fri night. It was so-so. They still had some opening goofs such as the soda machine was not working. Service was fair though the waiter did disappear when we wanted the check. Food was OK but I think Grub Hut is much better. I had the brisket, again it was just OK. I don't remember what the husband had, probabably pulled pork. Sauces were a little sweet for my taste. Same for their own bottled soda,; a nice selection of flavors but a little on the sweet side.

They have other cuisine besides BBQ (steak, italian) and I think they are spread too thin. Focus on one and do it well then do many and only do those OK

Fun family recipe instructions

My favorite was from a recipe my dear mother-in-law gave me for Orange Cranberry bread when I was dating my husband. No oven temp given and it ended with "Cook until done".

She also was the source for another of our favorites. She was an amzing pie baker and we realized we needed to learn as well so went to help one year when she made the Thanksgiving pies. I thought my husband was going to die laughing when she said "Now add lumps of Crisco". We asked how big was a lump and she replied a soup spoon size. Thankfully my husband picked up her knack for making the crusts but we never make the pies without laughing over the lumps.

Try contacting George Street Ale House http://www.georgestreetalehouse.com/ They have a fairly large area upstairs and might even be able to open down stairs.

Breakfast in Old Saybrook

Where in Old Saybrook is this?

Cog Almighty Fishery (Westfield, NJ)--anyone tried it yet?

Had lunch there yesterday. My husband thought the fish was quite fresh. I'm not a fish person so i had the chicken strips - not bad. And the fries were good, handcut fries.

Kid-friendly lunch near Rt-78 between 287 and Parkway

Try Chimney Rock Inn in Bridgewater http://www.chimneyrockinn.com/ Not too fancy but more than just pizza. There is also one in Gillette - I'm not sure how close that is to 78 - might want to check it out as well.

Thanks. Even if Dad desn't want to go there for his birthday I'll have to plan on on a meal there one of these days when we are up visiting.

Need a suggestion for 90 year olds birthday near Middletown, CT

Thanks for the suggesions. I know they tried Esca and weren't thrilled with it. I'll have to him if he likes Luce. Any other thoughts for Prime Rib? Even a good steak.

Need a suggestion for 90 year olds birthday near Middletown, CT

We are finally getting around to planning something for Dad's 90th birthday in December. Looking for a place for the family to get together for dinner on a Sat nite. Nothing too fancy. We will be anywhere from 9 - 12 people, youngest in college. Prime rib would be great, steaks, italian are also good choices. Folks will be coming from Middletown, Storrs, Waterford and New Britain. Close (30 min) to Middletown would be good but willing to drive down towards shoreline and east. Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

The Chefs Place, New Brunswick NJ

Tom - we ate there last spring (maybe last fall) for restaurant week and overall enjoyed our dinners. I see you mention a couple of wines. I thought Chef's Palace was BYO - are they serving wine now?

Inexpensive casual rec in Somerville for tonight?

small engagement/bridal shower room central nj

Vincenzos on Rt 28 in Middlesex has a small private dining room. And the food is good. http://www.vincenzosristorante.com/

Old Saybrook & Mystic, CT

Up rt 154 in Chester, try Lupo. Nice selection of small plates and interesting drinks. http://luporestaurant.com. We love sitting at the bar, usually an interesting crowd there. A couple of weeks ago we had Morrocean Spiced Garbanzo Fritters(falafel on steriods :) ), a bruschetta with goat cheese, a warm eggplant bruschetta, a scallop gratin dish and a special, salmon with artichoke hearts in a warm lemon vinagrette. The plum crumble for dessert was fabulous, one of the few times I regreted making my husband share dessert. I could have devoured the whole thing myself.

Strawberries in central CT

Agree Lyman's is great - II actually worked there back in the 70's! I was just trying to get some berries a little bit closer.

Strawberries in central CT

Thanks. I ended up at Staehly's roadside stand in East Haddam where they had Gotta's berries. Dad was thrilled to get homemade shortcake. Staehly's also had the Gotta's pies. Do you know if they are any good? I'm a bit of a pie snob (bless my Mother and Mother-in-law souls - they were the best pie makers on earth) and typically won't buy pies but these looked interesting, especially the peach berry.

Favorite frittata?

Thanks- sorry for thelate replay. Somehow I missed that this was posted. Sounds delicious. Hoepfully will get a chance to try it this summer

Strawberries in central CT

I'm heading up to CT to visit dad for father's day and would love to make him strawberry shortcake. I'll be in the Moodus/Middletown areas. Any good places to get native berries? I'm not sure if I will have time to actually pick so recommendations for places to buy or to pick would be nice. - thanks.

Strawberry shortcake- sponge cake or biscuit?

Agreed- strawberries over pound cake, angle food cake, sponge cake, even frozen waffles are all lovely deseerts but when I want shortcake I want shortcake! And if I ever need a change in my shortcake - adding crytalized ginger to the biscuits is a nice change. And I have been going back to mother's 19050's Betty Crocker cookbook for the shortcake recipe. I'll have to look at the CI recipe from kattyeyes

Old Saybrook, Deep River, or Chester restaurant needed for birthday lunch

Al Forno's in Old Saybrook on Rt 1. Nice selection of pizzas and italian dishes. And the bread is wonderful. I know they have a back (really side) room though I don't know if its used at lunch. If it is, would be a nice place for the lunch. Last time I was there it had some very interesting neon sculptures. http://www.alforno.net/

Farm foodie getaway in NJ?

You might be interested at events up in Ct called Dinner at the fFarm. http://www.dinnersatthefarm.com/Dinners_at_the_Farm/Home.html I've never been but it sounds interesting. Basically a big communal dinner set at a local farm.

Hilltop BBQ and Steakhouse - Moodus, CT

We were up in CT last Friday, working on getting the summer cabin in shape. We intended to grab a couple of sandwiches for a late lunch from a grocery store but saw that Hilltop BBQ had opened. We enjoyed a decent pulled pork sandwich and a shredded chicken sandwich. Both sandwiches came with a side. I got the sweet potato fries which were good. We liked the hot BBQ sauce best - not firey hot but enough heat to make it interesting.

Anybody been there? How are the ribs?

What can I do with mushy canned green beans?

Not sure if this will work with the french cut beans but I like to do crumbed beans. Melt some butter, add in bread crumbs, then toss in in drained beans and cook till warm. My mother did this with fresh beans but my mother-in-law used the can beans.

Centra PA hound headed for Piscataway in mid May, where to go?

Agree with suggestion about Four Seasons - although it is in a stripmall I wouldn't call it seedy. The restaurant is definitely bare bones though. Fountainbleu would make a good breakfast stop. And if you are in the mood for pizza, Pizza and Pasta on William Street has a wood fire oven. I love their Pesto Pizza.

New Brunswick Restaurant Week

Went to The Chef's Palace on Thursday before we went to GeorgeStreet Playhouse and had an enjoyable meal. I had the 4 course Prix-Fixe restaturant week special and husband had an entree off of teh regular menu. Price-Fixe was a liitle different than what was listed on web site but still good. I had the
Rustic Grilled Flat Bread, Zucchini, Tomatoes; Arugula & Goat Cheese apetizer, Ceasar salad, Chicken Milanese, Baby Arugula & Cherry Tomato, Shaved Parmesan, Lemon Caper Aioli entree and Mini Cheesecake w/strawberries. Appetizer and salad were large enough to share, chicken also was large and I had leftovers for lunch teh next day. cheesecake was mini and was so-so. Husband had a sea bass with mashed potatoes that he thought was tasty. I loved the rustic flatbread, wanted to lick the balasamic reduction on it off the plate.

Wish I had known it was BYOB. Aptmosphere is a little stark. Service was good except they were late in bringing the check even when they knew we had theater tickets.

I would go back.

Favorite frittata?

Sounds great. What size pan do you use? And can you provide instructions? Thanks
