The Big 3-0

No thoughts? Okay, how about ideas for the birthday cake? My bf is an insane Star Wars fan, so maybe something fun. Are there any good bakeries that specialize in kids' cakes? If I could get a really tasty sheet cake I guess I could decorate it myself with Star Wars figurines (sorry, action figures). I'm hoping for something in the village (or someone who delivers) since I won't have a ton of time to run around the day of the party if I'm going to surprise him.

The Big 3-0

Help! My bf is turning thirty and I'm trying to plan a surprise party for him while living in another city. I'm looking for a laid back bar for about 30 people in GV/EV/WV area (he lives just off Washington Sq). No food, just drinks. It would be a Saturday in November.

Last year we had the party at Von and had a great time, but they're a little expensive ($200/hr starting at 5pm even if you don't show up until 9!). I've contacted Vol de nuit and Otheroom, but haven't heard back yet. Luca Bar would be great, but they're only open until midnight.

Since it's a landmark birthday, something a little out of the ordinary might be nice. Has anyone been to a celebration at a bar that was memorable?

Thanksgiving-style hoagie?

I think that's the place! I remember them offering a vegetarian option. Thanks so much :)

Thanksgiving-style hoagie?

A while ago a pharmaceutical rep brought lunch for my office from some hoagie shop in New Jersey I think and there was this great turkey, stuffing, and cranberry sauce hoagie (mayo too if memory serves). I was just thinking about it the other day and did an online search but came up empty. Does anyone know of this place or another that serves the typical thanksgiving leftover hoagie? I live in Philly so anywhere in the general vicinity would be good.

Yeah, I saw the Dish and thought it looked good, but I was a little worried when the first thing mentioned on the web site is how long the wait time can be :)

I never considered brunch at a seafood restaurant like Skipjack's. Judging from their lunch/dinner menu online the only thing I could eat there would be the Asian Noodle Stir-fry. But speaking of seafood, I think we've ruled out the Barking Crab and I'm still up in the air about Legal's. Is Jasper White's Summer Shack any good? We're really looking for a moderately-priced casual downtown Boston restaurant with good fresh seafood (nothing too fancy) where I can at least get a salad.

Really, no BYO? That's all we have around here. The Beehive looks like a good bet. I'm hoping it won't be too crowded though since it's at the BCA during the Belgian beer fest.

Would you recommend Tapeo over Bar Lola? The outdoor patio seating at Bar Lola looked nice online, but I keep forgetting that you aren't having the heat wave that we are right now.

I forgot about LTK. That's a definite option. For genuine Boston seafood would Barking Crab be better? We can get good seafood in NY anytime (he loves the angry lobster @ Smith & Wollensky), but I want my BF to have the whole New England experience.

We're staying at the Jury's on Stuart. Nope, no seafood.

Rachel's actually looks more our speed than Sel De La Terra for brunch/lunch so we'll definitely check it out. Even though I'm not technically vegan, I don't eat cheese or eggs so I'm a bit limited.

I couldn't find a single vegetarian option on the Legal Seafoods web site. Barking Crab at least has some hummus and polenta and grilled veggies. Atmosphere-wise, is one significantly better than the other? I don't mind plastic tablecloths if the view is good :)

Are most of the places in the North End BYOs and cash only?

Is the Sail Loft on Atlantic Ave? I found a Sail Loft restaurant online, but nothing about drinks.

Good Life may be a little trendy for us. Is there a Christopher's-type bar in Boston proper?

My BF and I will be visiting Boston the weekend of 10/26-10/28. I've been looking online for some casual restaurants and bars, but everything I've come across that looks good is located somewhere outside Boston. I realize that Cambridge and JP are not far, but we only have two days and we're trying to fit in as much as possible. Also, I'm a vegetarian.

We'll be arriving Friday afternoon and checking into Jury's. We'd like to spend most of the day exploring the city--Boston Common, Freedom Trail, etc--so I was thinking of dinner somewhere nearby. Both Bin 26 and Bar Lola looked good (online at least). Any good bars in the area for after dinner drinks? Silvertone maybe? (What's the dress code situation at Boston bars? Do we have to worry about being turned away if in jeans?)

Saturday we'll be going to the aquarium and touring the Harpoon brewery. Is there a good brunch place between Back Bay and the Waterfront? I saw that Milk St Cafe was mentioned, but couldn't find any breakfast food on their online menu. I was thinking the Barking Crab for dinner (my BF suggested Legal Seafood, but it looks very vegetarian-unfriendly). Looking for a cozy pub-type bar for later--some place we can have a conversation without screaming over the music preferably.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated :)
